The trade also runs the other way and the same aircraft carries it. Aircraft components moving to European overhaul shops, product samples for European laboratories, and prototype work for Spanish parent companies all take the eastbound rotation. Because the sector is flown nonstop and overnight, a consignment released in Madrid in the afternoon is in Bogotthe same day in local time, which is the whole reason a planner considers a person rather than a network.

MADBOG
Madrid · Bogota · 24/7Onboard courier from Madrid to Bogota
Madrid is Europe's working hub for Latin America and Bogota is one of the best served points on it. Four airlines fly the sector nonstop and there are departures on most evenings, so the question is rarely whether a courier can get there. It is whether the export paperwork in Spain and the import entry in Colombia have both been prepared while the aircraft is still on the stand.
A European supply base and an Andean installed base
Spain sells Colombia capital goods, and capital goods break. Machinery for food and beverage, packaging lines, mining and quarry equipment, water and energy plant, rail systems, aerospace structures from the Madrid and Andalusian plants, and pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment all have a Colombian installed base with Spanish or wider European origin. When one of those installations stops, the spare part and the engineer who understands it are usually on the same continent, and Madrid is the natural point to fly from.
OnBoard Courier is licensed in Dubai and operates as a placement business. We take the enquiry, quote it, plan the routing and check the documents, and the assignment is placed with an operating partner who buys the seat and flies the courier. We are not an airline, we are not a Spanish forwarder and we are not a Colombian customs agency. Everything below is what we make sure is in place before the courier leaves, not a claim about who we are.

The departure boards behind MAD to BOG
A hand-carry on this lane is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once, books the one that lands first and holds the one that leaves next.
The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at from Madrid to Bogota first, at a fare the quote can carry.
from Madrid to Bogota: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.
Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.
The Spanish side of the paperwork
Leaving the European Union with commercial goods is an export, and it is the step most often forgotten because the courier is a passenger. An export declaration is lodged where the value or the nature of the goods requires it, the exporter needs an EORI number, and the commercial invoice has to describe the item in terms a customs officer can match to a tariff code. Where the goods are being sent for repair and will return, saying so on the paperwork at this stage is what makes the return leg cheap instead of expensive.
Dual use is the other Spanish side question. Measurement and inspection equipment, some electronics, certain materials and anything with an aerospace or defence connection can need an export authorisation, and putting it in a suitcase does not change that. We ask what the item is, what it goes into and who the end user is at enquiry, because a licence question found at Barajas is a licence question found too late.
Collection across Spain and into Barajas
Madrid Barajas is the boarding point rather than the origin for a good share of these missions. The Madrid ring itself covers Getafe, Illescas, Alcala de Henares, Tres Cantos and the Corredor del Henares industrial belt. Valencia, Zaragoza and Valladolid are a straightforward road leg or a domestic sector. The Basque machine tool cluster around Elgoibar and Bilbao, and the Catalan chemical and automotive plants, are further and are usually flown into Madrid rather than driven.
That repositioning is planned as its own leg with its own risk. A domestic connection that leaves no margin turns one delay into a missed long haul, so where the item is released late in the day in the north, the honest recommendation is often the following evening's departure rather than a heroic same day attempt. We say so in the quotation instead of discovering it at the gate.
Ten hours in the air and what it does to a cold chain
This is a long sector, and a long sector eats the hold time of any temperature controlled package. Before a cold consignment is accepted, the shipper's own qualification data is checked against the door to door duration, not against the flight time, because the collection, the airport dwell, the flight, the arrival formalities and the road leg all count. If the numbers do not work, the answer is a different packaging solution or a different mode, and we say that rather than taking the booking.
Dry ice is capped at 2.5 kilogrammes per passenger under aviation dangerous goods rules, in vented packaging marked with the net weight. That is an absolute limit and it is not negotiable at any price. Where more cooling duration is needed, a phase change or dry shipper solution is the route, and where even that is insufficient the consignment belongs in a temperature controlled freight service rather than in a courier's baggage.
Arriving at El Dorado
El Dorado is in the Fontibon district on the west side of Bogota and it is the busiest air cargo airport in Latin America, which means the customs operation is used to commercial traffic and the brokers are competent. The courier declares the goods on arrival and presents the invoice and packing list, and the import declaration is lodged with DIAN by the consignee's own customs agency. Colombia's traveller regime does not cover commercial shipments, so the item is entered as an import and not as luggage.
Certain categories need something in place before the aircraft departs Madrid rather than after it lands. Pharmaceutical and medical goods, food contact materials and some telecommunications equipment can require a registration or a prior authorisation from the relevant Colombian authority. We ask the consignee's agency to confirm the position at quotation stage, because an item held for a permit is an item that has gained nothing from being hand carried.
Beyond Bogota
Bogota is often the entry point rather than the destination. The sabana industrial towns, Cota, Funza, Mosquera, Tocancipa and Sopo, are inside an hour on a clear road and are the pharmaceutical and manufacturing belt. Medellin and the Antioquia textile and industrial cluster, Cali and the Valle del Cauca sugar and food processing plants, Cartagena and the Mamonal petrochemical zone, and Barranquilla are all better reached by a domestic flight than by road.
Where the final destination is one of those cities, the customs entry usually still happens at Bogota and the item then travels as a domestic passenger bag with the same courier, or is handed to the consignee's own transport. That choice changes the price and the timing, so it is settled in the quotation. Villavicencio for the Llanos oil operations is the exception that is genuinely drivable, on a mountain road of several hours.
The rule that does not bend
If anyone asks the courier for a payment to move an inspection along, release a bag or produce a signature, nothing is paid. The courier asks for the assessment in writing, asks for a supervisor and telephones the coordinator, who takes it up through the consignee's customs agency. Waiting costs hours. A facilitation payment costs the consignee a compliance problem that outlives the shipment.
That instruction is given at the briefing, in writing, before the courier leaves Madrid, and it is not modified for a valuable consignment or an angry consignee. It is also the reason the documents are checked so hard beforehand: the great majority of requests of this kind arise from a discrepancy that could have been fixed at the collection point.
Services that carry this lane
What flies, and what it means for a courier who has to be at the gate.
- Iberia flies Madrid to Bogota nonstop from its Barajas hub with the largest European share of the sector.
- Avianca operates the most frequent nonstop service on the route overall and connects onward across Colombia from El Dorado.
- Air Europa flies the nonstop from Madrid and offers a different departure bank when Iberia is full.
- Plus Ultra also serves the sector nonstop, which adds a further option on a difficult date.
- Where every nonstop is closed, a routing over another European or North American hub is priced, with the reminder that it moves the European export exit point.
Questions about Madrid to Bogota
01How many nonstops are there a day?
Iberia, Avianca, Air Europa and Plus Ultra between them operate around fifty five nonstop departures a week, which is roughly eight a day across the carriers, concentrated in the afternoon and evening. Westbound block time is about ten and a half hours.
02Does the item need a Spanish export declaration?
Commercial goods leaving the European Union normally do, and the exporter needs an EORI number. Where the goods are going out for repair and returning, that has to be stated on the outbound paperwork or the return entry becomes an expensive import rather than a returned repair.
03Can a temperature controlled consignment travel this way?
Only where the shipper's qualified hold time covers the whole door to door duration, not just the flight. Dry ice is capped at 2.5 kilogrammes per passenger under aviation rules and cannot be increased. If the numbers do not work we say so and recommend a different solution rather than accepting the booking.
04Who files the Colombian import declaration?
The consignee's own licensed customs agency, against the consignee as importer. Colombia's traveller regime does not cover commercial goods, so the item is declared and entered properly. Duty, value added tax and agency fees are the consignee's account unless agreed otherwise in writing.
05Can the courier continue to Medellin or Cali?
Yes. The customs entry is normally made at Bogota and the item then travels on a domestic sector with the same courier. That leg is quoted with its own time and cost rather than being assumed, and we tell you whether a domestic flight or a road leg lands earlier.
06Do you have staff in Madrid or Bogota?
No. OnBoard Courier is a Dubai licensed placement business. We take the enquiry, plan and price the mission, check the documents and place the assignment with an operating partner who books the seat and flies the courier. The customs work at each end belongs to the exporter and the importer and their own agents.
What the desk works out before it quotes Madrid to Bogota
Computed for MAD to BOG on 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics and from the airport files retrieved 2026-09-07. The distance is great circle between MAD and BOG, the flying time is the model the calculator on this page runs, and the hours are local at each end. Frequencies move with the season, so a Madrid to Bogota quote is priced on the flights running the day you ask rather than on this page.
How a Madrid to Bogota movement actually runs
A Madrid to Bogota movement runs on one aircraft. The schedule the desk holds carries Madrid MAD to Bogotá BOG nonstop 9.4 times a day over 8,031 km of great circle track, which at the cruise speed this site models blocks at about 10h 10m. Four airlines hold MAD to BOG in the schedule, Air China, Air Europa, Avianca and Etihad Airways, which gives a courier who loses a seat somewhere to go without leaving the nonstop. Roughly one departure every 2.5 hours across the day means a collection in Madrid that runs late costs a wait rather than a lost day.
The clock on a Madrid to Bogota movement
| Stage | Madrid local | Bogota local |
|---|---|---|
| Collection closes | 09:00 | 03:00 |
| At the airport | 10:30 | 04:30 |
| Wheels up | 13:30 | 07:30 |
| On the ground | 23:40 | 17:40 |
| Through arrivals | 01:10 | 19:10 |
| Handed over | 01:55 | 19:55 |
The same ground allowances the calculator on this page starts from, ninety minutes to collect and reach MAD, three hours at the airport before departure, 10h 10m in the air nonstop, ninety minutes of arrival formalities at BOG and a forty five minute delivery run. Both columns are local, read for a mid January date, because Madrid and Bogota do not change their clocks on the same day. Move any of the allowances in the calculator lower down this page and the whole Madrid to Bogota clock moves with them.
Bogota runs 6 hours behind Madrid in January, which is why the two columns above do not sit 10h 10m apart. In July the gap is 7 hours instead, because Madrid and Bogota do not change their clocks together, and a summer booking on this lane is read off the summer figure. Read backwards, a six in the evening handover in Bogota would need the collection in Madrid closed the day before, which is the shape of MAD to BOG: the aircraft is boarded on one calendar day and the item is handed over in Bogota on the next, and a quote that pretends otherwise is a quote that will be missed. Forwards, a nine in the morning collection in Madrid reaches the door in Bogota at about 19:55 local, after the end of a normal working day, so the handover is either arranged with somebody on site or it waits for the morning.
What gets a courier onto the Madrid to Bogota lane
The industrial geography the site publishes puts one aerospace site within reach of MAD or BOG: Airbus at Getafe and Illescas. The file names them as public industrial fact and not as anybody's customer, it is checked 2026-09-07, and it is the reason MAD to BOG is a lane at all. That mix is what a hand carry between Madrid and Bogota usually carries: aerospace work moves in small, heavy, expensive pieces that a line is already waiting for, and it is the waiting line rather than the weight of the item that pays for a seat. What the measured network does say about the item is that 8,031 km is a long haul sector, so the consignment stays with one person for 10h 10m of flying and is presented at BOG by that person. Anything inside cabin limits leaves MAD in the cabin and stays there for the whole of it; above that it travels as accompanied checked baggage on the same ticket and is lifted off the belt at BOG by the same courier.
Where a Madrid to Bogota consignment is entered, and at what hour
A consignment that leaves Madrid on this lane is entered at Bogotá BOG. The held schedule reaches Colombia at 48 airports in all, Rionegro MDE, Santiago de Cali CLO, Cartagena de Indias CTG and Barranquilla BAQ among them, so where the consignee is not in Bogotthe desk compares the arrival airport before it buys the MAD ticket rather than driving the difference afterwards. The hour matters as much as the paperwork, and on the clock above the courier is through arrivals at Bogota BOG at 19:10 local, while an entry into Colombia that lands outside working hours waits for the people who process it, so the desk sets the broker and the receiving contact against that hour before the courier leaves Madrid for BOG. What the entry itself needs, the declaration, the broker and the documents, is set out for Colombia on the country desk and is not repeated on every lane that lands at BOG, and the desk checks that position against the actual consignment before it quotes MAD to BOG.
The other ways into Colombia on MAD to BOG
A consignee on this lane is not always in Bogota, so these are the other airports in Colombia that MAD reaches without a change of aircraft on the held schedule, with the great circle distance from BOG beside each one. The closest of them is Rionegro MDE at 215 km from BOG, running about once a day out of MAD, which on a delivery outside the city is often the shorter total journey even though it looks like the wrong airport.
| Airport | City | Flights a day from MAD | km from BOG | In the calculator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rionegro MDE | Rionegro | 1.9 | 215 | open it |
| Santiago de Cali CLO | Santiago de Cali | 1.1 | 279 | open it |
Straight line distance from BOG, not a road distance, and the desk works the road leg out properly against the actual delivery address before it quotes MAD into an airport that is not BOG.
What Madrid to Bogota costs in courier time
This desk is in Dubai and neither end of MAD to BOG is, so where a courier has to be positioned onto MAD rather than found there, the held schedule puts AUH to MAD at about twice a day over 5,639 km, and that positioning leg is priced into the quote rather than discovered after it. Three of the five UAE gateways reach MAD without a change, which is why the MAD to BOG collection that has to start tomorrow morning in Madrid is still worth asking about tonight. The assignment is not finished at the signature, and BOG back to MAD runs 9.4 times a day on the same held schedule, so the courier has a way home on the same day the item is delivered, and the fare that matters to a quote is the round trip rather than the one way. At 16h 55m from collection to signature the job is past the sixteen hour duty period a single courier is planned against, so MAD to BOG is quoted with a rest built in or with the courier changed at the interchange, and never as one unbroken shift. By length this is the 113th longest of the 346 lanes the site publishes, at 8,031 km.
What decides whether Madrid to Bogota goes today
- The next departure: MAD to BOG runs 9.4 times a day on the held schedule, so the question is not whether the lane exists but whether today's aircraft still has a seat and a cabin allowance that fits the item.
- The calendar: the door to door figure is 16h 55m, which on this lane puts the handover in Bogota on the day after the collection in Madrid, so the decision to make today is which morning it has to reach BOG, not which hour.
- Room to be rebooked: Madrid carries about 720.9 scheduled departures a day and Bogotá about 538.2, so a courier who has to be moved has a great deal to work with at the near end.
- The paperwork: the invoice value, the description and the classification have to agree with what is in the box before the courier leaves Madrid for Bogota, and that is checked at the collection address, because a mismatch found at BOG is settled at the speed of a broker rather than the speed of an aeroplane.
