Spain · twelve origin airports including the islands

Two of the busiest boards in Europe, and Spain has both of them

Madrid and Barcelona are not one big airport and one small one. They are two large intercontinental gateways facing different directions, and the islands add gates of their own.

Self employed. You take the assignments you want.

The thing that cannot be shipped

Every week something has to move that no freight service will handle the way the client needs it handled. A sealed sample with a short usable life. An original that has to stay in identified custody. A qualified component for a machine that is not running until it arrives.

01

The old solution still wins: a person books a seat, carries the item in the cabin, takes it through customs personally and hands it to a named recipient who signs. The trade calls that person an on board courier.

02

The seat is paid for by the desk that needs the item moved, which is in Dubai. It is booked in your name, against your passport, before you leave the house, and there is no version of this where you pay first.

Firm quote in 15 minutes

Tell us what has to fly. We answer with a flight and a price.

Five short questions. A dispatcher replies with a named departure, the delivery hour and one fixed price, day and night.

  • One named courier from collection to signature
  • Customs cleared in person on arrival
  • Licensed UAE company, proper VAT invoices

After the handover, there is a date to look at

Barcelona to Dubai is 6h 37m and Madrid 7h 11m, both nonstop and both frequent. The outbound is set by the deadline and there is no flexibility in it. The return is a separate decision.

01

Where the assignment allows and the schedule cooperates, the desk can issue the return for up to a week after the outbound. It is a routine way to build a booking when nothing needs you back immediately, and it is the single most misrepresented fact in this whole industry, so it is worth being precise: sometimes, not always, and never as a promise.

02

When it does happen the effect is simple. You finish the job on the morning you land, and then there are days that belong to you in a city you did not pay to reach. You cover your own costs during them. The flight home is already booked.

03

When it does not happen you know in advance, because both dates appear on the written offer. Some consignments need a return the same night, occasionally with something coming back with you.

Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for your consignment

A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.

Emirates

The night bank out of Terminal 3

Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For your consignment that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.

Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus cities
flydubai

The short sectors, several times a day

From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.

Frequency is the fallback
Etihad

Abu Dhabi as the second runway

Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for your consignment is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.

US preclearance at AUH

The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at your consignment first, at a fare the quote can carry.

Every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

Spanish origins in the route data

Eight of the twelve Spanish gateways in the network, ordered by daily departures. Two of them are on islands, which is a feature of this country that most of the others in this section do not have.

Route counts and departure averages are read from the scheduled route statistics the site keeps in obc-network.json, built 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics. Flight times are great circle distance on the curve the rest of this site uses, so treat them as sector length rather than as a timetable.

Two mainland giants, and then the Atlantic

Madrid shows 252 nonstop destinations on about 721 departures a day, and it is the European gateway to Latin America: Buenos Aires at 12h 27m, Santiago at 13h 13m, Lima at 11h 47m. Barcelona carries 233 destinations on around 625 departures.

01

Then the islands. Palma is an origin with 189 nonstops, Las Palmas and both Tenerife airports appear as well, and Malaga adds 163. For a desk that needs something from the Canaries or the Balearics without waiting for a connection through the mainland, those are real gates rather than seasonal ones.

02

The traffic mirrors the economy: pharmaceutical and clinical material out of Madrid and Barcelona, automotive and machine components out of the north, aerospace parts out of Seville and Madrid, fresh and laboratory samples out of the south, and a constant flow of legal and corporate originals on the Latin America lanes.

Why the passport matters operationally

A Spanish passport crosses most of this network without an advance permission, and that is the whole reason a Gulf desk recruits in this part of the world. The value being bought is speed, and paperwork is the enemy of speed.

01

You do not do the checking. Requirements are verified against your nationality and the specific routing, transit points included, before an offer is issued, and any permission a lane needs forms part of the assignment.

02

There is one Spain specific advantage worth naming. On the Latin America lanes, language is a practical asset at the far end, and it comes up more often from here than from anywhere else in this section.

Reasons to walk away

You would be self employed, a freelancer with no staff contract and no roster, and not entitled to work. Each assignment is a separate offer, accepted or refused in writing, and refusing has no consequence.

01

Nobody can therefore tell you how frequent it would be. That is a function of client demand, which is not knowable in advance, and any number quoted at you is invented.

02

The work is also demanding in a way people underestimate. You are personally responsible for the consignment for the entire journey, you clear it at customs yourself, and the deadline is the reason you were hired. When a later return has been issued, the days in the middle are unpaid and self funded. The flights, the transfers and a hotel where the routing requires one are covered.

Questions from Spain

01Do the island airports really get used?

They appear as origins in the route data with their own nonstop boards. Whether an assignment starts there depends on where the client is, but the aircraft exist and that is the precondition.

02Is Spanish useful or is English enough?

English is required for the desk and the documents. Spanish is a genuine advantage on the Latin America lanes and comes up more from here than from other countries.

03What if I am offered something and my plans change?

You decline, and that is the end of it. You are not penalised and it does not affect what you are offered next.

04Would I be told what is inside the consignment?

You are told what you need to know to declare it correctly, which is the whole point of using a person instead of a parcel. You never carry something you cannot describe at a border.

If you want to be considered, start here

The application asks which passports you hold and roughly when you could travel. It is short by design.

The conversation about which gateway suits you happens afterwards.

Applying commits you to nothing. Assignments are offered individually in writing, with the routing and both dates in front of you.

Three ways the desk can move your consignment

Same courier, same cabin, different amount of ground work. The desk recommends one of these in the quote and prices the other two if you ask.

The lean one

Airport to airport

  • A courier meets your driver airside at the departure airport
  • The consignment stays in the cabin for the whole flight
  • Your consignee, or their broker, collects at the arrival airport
  • Cleared in person, questions answered at the counter

Best when both ends have people who can reach an airport.

What most clients book

Door to door

  • Collection at your address, sealed and photographed
  • One named courier from that door to the signature
  • Customs cleared in person on arrival, duties handled as agreed
  • Proof of delivery with signature, identity check and photograph

The full chain, one price, one person answerable for it.

When the schedule will not do

Charter and relay

  • A second courier takes over where a visa or a duty limit stops the first
  • A private aircraft where the last airline departure has gone
  • Ground relay across a border when flying is the slower option
  • Priced case by case, in writing, before anything moves

For deadlines that a scheduled seat cannot reach.
