On board courier India

A separate desk for a separate market. 46 India cities, each with its own page, its own industries and its own customs reality, connected to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and every other UAE airport by a vetted courier carrying your consignment in the aircraft cabin. Cabin carriage is used where permitted, with one named courier responsible for the documented chain of custody.

One person beats a parcel network to India

The freight chain is not slow because aircraft are slow, it is slow because a consignment waits at every handover. A courier removes the queues, not the kilometres.

Why India and the Emirates are one logistics market, not two

Look at a map of the Arabian Sea and the modern trade relationship stops looking like a policy achievement and starts looking like geography. Gujarat and Kerala are closer to Dubai than Delhi is to Chennai. A consignment leaving Mumbai in the morning is in the Emirates before lunch. There is no other pairing of a billion-person manufacturing economy and a global re-export hub anywhere in the world with a three-hour flight between them.

01

That proximity has produced one of the largest bilateral trade relationships either country has. The Emirates sit among India's top trading partners in both directions, and since the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement came into force in 2022 the tariff position on a very large share of goods has been progressively reduced or removed. Gems and jewellery, textiles, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food and electronics all move in volume, and a meaningful slice of each of those categories is small, valuable and urgent, which is precisely the slice an on board courier serves.

02

Underneath the trade sits something even more important for a courier network: people. Roughly 3.5 million Indians live in the United Arab Emirates, the largest expatriate community in the country. There are flights from every UAE airport to more Indian cities than to any other country on earth, on four UAE carriers plus the Indian ones, several times a day, all year. For a hand-carry that density is the whole game: it is the difference between “the next departure is in forty minutes” and “the next departure is tomorrow”.

03

And it runs in both directions, which is the part most courier companies get wrong. An exporter in Surat sending polished stones to a Dubai buyer, a pharmaceutical company in Hyderabad sending stability samples to a laboratory in Europe via a Gulf connection, a buying house in Sharjah sending approved lab dips back to a mill in Faisalabad or Tiruppur, these are three different problems and all three are solved by a person with a seat.

Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for India

A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.

Emirates

The night bank out of Terminal 3

Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For India that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.

Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus cities
flydubai

The short sectors, several times a day

From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.

Frequency is the fallback
Etihad

Abu Dhabi as the second runway

Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for India is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.

US preclearance at AUH

The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at India first, at a fare the quote can carry.

India: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

Courier or air cargo?

On board courier vs air cargo

Everything on this desk could travel India, UAE as air cargo instead. This is the difference a person in a seat makes.

On board courier

A person in a seat

  • Leaves on the next available flight, often within hours of your call, 24/7.
  • One named courier holds the consignment from collection to signature.
  • Travels in the aircraft cabin wherever the airline, cargo classification and security rules permit it; the transport configuration is confirmed before booking.
  • No warehouse, no consolidation window, no overnight sort.
  • Customs cleared in person, questions answered at the counter, immediately.
  • Same-day delivery is realistic on most sectors out of the UAE.
  • Built for high-value, fragile, temperature-critical goods and originals.
  • Proof of delivery with signature, ID check and a photograph within minutes.
  • A human being you can call at any point of the journey.

Air cargo & express freight

A parcel in a system

  • Waits for the next consolidation and space allocation, not for you.
  • Passes through many hands: hub, build-up, ramp, break-down, delivery agent.
  • Rides in the hold, frequently sitting in a warehouse overnight.
  • Each handover is a queue, and each queue is where hours disappear.
  • Cleared in a batch by a broker; one query can idle the shipment for a day.
  • Next day at best on most lanes, two to three days if it is held.
  • Chain of custody is a scan history, not a person with the box.
  • Signed for by whoever happens to be at the door.
  • Right answer for heavy, bulky or non-urgent freight, and we will say so.

To be straight about it: air cargo is not a bad service, it is a different one. It moves weight cheaply and it does that extremely well. A hand-carry buys back hours, and it is worth paying for exactly when an hour of delay costs more than a seat on a plane, which is the case far more often than most shippers assume, and far less often than most courier companies claim.

How an India assignment actually runs

An India assignment is not complicated, but every step has a failure mode, and the difference between an operator and a broker is whether those failure modes were planned for before the courier left the house.

Minute 0 to 15

You tell us what it is

The first conversation is short and specific: contents, declared value, collection address, delivery address in India, and the real deadline rather than the comfortable one. If there are batteries, powders, liquids, biological material or anything regulated in the box, that is the moment to say so, not at the check-in desk.

Minute 15 to 45

We screen it and price it

We check three things at once: whether we may lawfully carry it, whether India will let it in without a permit we do not have, and whether it physically fits an aircraft cabin. Only then do you get a fixed price, and the price includes the ticket, the courier fee, transfers and a hotel where an overnight is unavoidable.

Hour 1 to 3

A named courier is assigned and booked

Assignment is not a raffle. The consignment's value, its regulatory profile and the destination decide who is offered it. For India, visa eligibility usually narrows the list faster than availability does, which is exactly why a global courier network is worth having.

Hour 2 to 4

Collection, sealing and documentation

The courier collects in person, checks the goods against the description, seals the packaging with a numbered tamper-evident seal and photographs it. The commercial invoice, packing list and any permit travel with the courier, and a copy reaches our operations desk and the consignee in India at the same moment.

In flight

The consignment stays in the cabin

It stays in one named courier's documented custody for the whole sector, in the aircraft cabin wherever size, classification, security rules and the operating airline permit it, and otherwise under an approved accompanied process. On the ground at any transit point the courier stays airside with it. There is no depot, no consolidation window and no overnight sort anywhere in the routing to India.

On arrival

Customs, then a signature

At the arrival airport in Indithe goods are declared properly, a commercial consignment goes through the red channel, and a courier who chooses the green channel to save twenty minutes has committed an offence rather than a shortcut. Delivery follows immediately, against a signed and timestamped receipt.

Who books a courier to India

Hand-carry demand is not evenly spread, it clusters in industries where an hour of delay costs more than the flight. These are the ones that book India most often, and what they send.

Semiconductors and electronics

Wafers, reticles, test boards, display panels and pre-production units. Small, fragile, export-controlled and usually holding up a fab, a lab or a product launch somewhere.

Machine spares and line-down parts

A controller, a bearing, a die or a sensor whose absence has stopped a shift. The part is usually small and cheap; the stoppage behind it is neither.

Automotive and mobility

Prototypes under confidentiality, homologation samples, tooling inserts and line-critical components moving to build schedules that were fixed months ago.

Jewellery, watches and precious goods

Loose stones, finished pieces, movements and bullion documentation, carried in the cabin under one named person's custody and declared properly on arrival in India rather than hopefully.

Fashion and product samples

Lab dips, lookbooks, couture pieces and pre-production units that have to be in a buyer's hands before the meeting. After the meeting they are worth exactly nothing.

Media, events and production

Rushes, masters, broadcast hardware and event material with a transmission or a stage time attached, deadlines that do not move because logistics had a difficult day.

The paperwork that decides how fast India goes

Nothing delays a hand-carry as reliably as a document that says something different from the box. This is what we prepare with you before the courier leaves, and why each piece matters at the arrival airport in India.

Legalisation and attestation

Documents that must be legalised, apostilled or attested to be valid in India are checked before the courier collects them. A perfectly delivered document that lacks the right stamp has not solved anybody's problem.

ATA Carnet and temporary admission

Where goods enter India temporarily and leave again, demonstration equipment, exhibition pieces, professional gear, a carnet avoids duty entirely and gives the courier a document the officer recognises immediately. It has to be issued before departure; there is no retrospective version.

Tariff classification

The HS code decides the duty, the permits and sometimes whether the goods may enter India at all. We would rather agree the classification with you before departure than watch an officer choose one for us, because the officer's choice is the one that stands.

Duty, tax and who pays it

Import duty and VAT or GST in India are the consignee's cost unless you have agreed otherwise in writing, and the terms should be settled before departure. It is a small conversation before the flight and an expensive one after it.

Temperature and dangerous goods

Dry ice quantities, lithium battery watt-hours, biological substance classification and packing group all have hard limits for a passenger cabin. Some consignments to India can travel exactly as they are; some need repacking; some cannot fly with a passenger at all, and we say so rather than finding out at security.

Commercial invoice

The document customs actually reads. It needs a plain description of the goods, the real value, the currency, the terms of sale and the full names and addresses of both parties. “Samples, no commercial value” is not a customs value and it is the fastest way to turn a twenty-minute clearance at the arrival airport in India into an afternoon.

What an India courier actually costs, and why

We do not publish a price list, because a fixed table would be a lie: the same box on the same route costs differently at four hours' notice than at two days'. What we can do is be exact about which levers move the number, so nothing in the quote is a surprise.

Regulatory profile of the goods

Batteries, biological material, temperature-controlled consignments and anything export-controlled require preparation, sometimes a permit and occasionally a specialist packer. That work is real and it appears in the quote rather than as a surprise at the airport.

Declared value and insurance

All-risk cover is priced on the declared value of the goods, and it is the number that matters, airline liability under the Montreal Convention is a fraction of what most courier consignments are worth. Understating the value to save a little on cover is a false economy the first time anything goes wrong.

Size, weight and whether it fits a locker

Anything beyond normal cabin baggage means a second seat, and occasionally two. An extra seat sounds dramatic until you compare it with a charter: it is an order of magnitude cheaper and it moves at the speed of a scheduled flight.

How much notice you give us

A seat bought four hours before departure costs what a seat bought four hours before departure costs. Nothing about that is a courier margin, it is simply the airline's pricing curve, and it is the single largest variable in an India quote.

Distance and sector count

The shortest workable routing to India keeps the ticket count, and the risk count, at the minimum. A two-sector routing is cheaper on paper and more expensive in practice, because every connection is a chance to lose the consignment's schedule. We quote the routing we would actually fly, not the cheapest one that technically arrives.

What is always included

Ticket, courier fee, airport transfers, the hotel where an overnight is unavoidable, the documentation work and our operations desk being awake for the whole journey. What is not included is duty and tax in India, and anything you ask for after departure that changes the routing.

Every quote we send is fixed before departure and contains the flight, the courier's fee, transfers and, where an overnight cannot be avoided, the hotel. The things that can change it afterwards are the things you control: a change of destination, a change of goods, or a delay at your end that costs the booked flight. Duty and tax in India sit with the consignee unless we have agreed otherwise in writing.

What can go wrong on an India assignment, and what we do about it

Every operator has these problems. The difference is whether the answer was decided in advance or invented at the counter. This is our answer to each of them, written down before you need it.

The courier is refused boarding

Almost always a document problem: a passport too close to expiry, a missing transit visa, a name on the ticket that does not match the passport. Every one of those is checked at assignment, and it is checked again before the courier leaves for the airport.

Weather or airspace closes the route

Force majeure does not disappear because a shipment is urgent. What we do is re-plan around it, a different hub, a different carrier, occasionally a different UAE airport, and tell you what the new arrival time is rather than letting you discover it.

The consignment is larger than described

Measured at collection, not at the gate. If it will not fit a locker we buy a seat for it there and then and tell you the revised number before the courier moves, rather than improvising at check-in.

Something needs to continue past India

A second sector, a border crossing or a domestic flight beyond the arrival airport in India is planned as part of the assignment, not handed to a third party on arrival. The chain of custody either holds to the signature or it is not a chain of custody.

The flight is cancelled

Not a crisis, a routine. Before the courier leaves for the airport we already know the next two departures that could carry the consignment to India, on any carrier, from any of the seven UAE airports. Rebooking is a phone call, not a rescue operation.

The connection is missed

This is why we build routings above the minimum connection time rather than at it. Where a connection is genuinely tight, the courier holds the consignment airside and takes the next available service rather than clearing into a country they were only passing through.

Courier work to and from More questions about the India

The questions clients actually ask before their first assignment, answered without marketing language.

01Do you handle customs at the arrival airport in India?

The courier declares the goods in person through the red channel, and where the value or the category warrants it we brief a licensed customs broker in India in advance. Duty and tax are the consignee's cost unless agreed otherwise in writing.

02Can you collect outside the UAE?

Yes. Third-country assignments, collect in one country, deliver in another, are a normal part of the work, and they are routed through the fastest connection rather than automatically through Dubai. Where a courier already in the region can take it, that is what happens.

03How is delivery proven?

Signature, printed name and an identification reference, with a timestamp, plus photographs where you have asked for them. It is produced by the courier at the moment of handover in India, not generated by a depot three hours later.

04Does the consignment ever go into the hold?

No. That is the definition of the service rather than a policy we could relax. It travels in the cabin, in the courier's custody, for every sector of the journey to India. If something genuinely cannot travel in a cabin, we will tell you that and discuss freight or a charter instead of pretending.

05Can a courier carry more than one consignment?

Only where both belong to the same client and the customs position is clean. Mixing two clients' goods under one declaration into India creates a liability neither of them agreed to, so we do not do it.

06Are you an airline?

No. OnBoard Courier is a courier placement and brokerage business based in Dubai. We vet, train and insure couriers, screen consignments and buy ordinary passenger seats on scheduled flights. We operate no aircraft, hold no alliance membership and have no exclusive carrier contract, which is exactly what lets us put a courier on whichever airline departs next for India.

07How quickly can a courier leave for India?

A vetted courier can normally be at a UAE airport within two to four hours of a confirmed booking. The real constraint is not our side, it is the next departure with a seat and a cabin allowance that fits. Because we use all seven UAE airports and buy on the open market rather than through one carrier, that next departure is usually sooner than people expect.

08What happens if the flight is cancelled?

We rebook. Before departure we already know the next alternatives to India across the carriers we can lawfully use, so a cancellation costs hours rather than a day. You are told the new arrival time as soon as we have it, not after you ask.

09Is the consignment insured?

All-risk cover on the declared value is arranged on request and confirmed in writing before collection. We do not rely on airline liability, because under the Montreal Convention that liability is a small fraction of what most courier consignments are worth.

Questions about courier work to and from India

01Do you serve all of India or only the main hub?

All of it. There are 46 India cities on this desk, each with its own page. Where a city has no reliable non-stop from the Emirates we route through the nearest hub and continue by domestic sector or road, with the courier still holding the consignment the whole way. A chain of custody that ends at an airport is not a chain of custody.

02How fast is India to the UAE really?

It depends on the city, each page on this desk states the block time for that specific routing. Door to door, a consignment collected in the morning is normally delivered the same evening on the shorter sectors, and even the longest routings are usually a single day end to end. The binding constraint is almost never the flying, it is how quickly the goods are ready and how clean the paperwork is.

03Which direction do you handle?

Both, plus third-country legs. Outbound from the Emirates into India, inbound from India into the UAE, and India onward through Dubai to Europe, Africa, the Far East or the Americas on one continuous chain of custody.

04What does it cost?

Roughly what a ticket on that route costs, plus the courier fee and the ground work at each end. The largest variable is notice: a seat bought four hours before departure costs what it costs. Every quote is fixed before departure and includes the flight, the fee, transfers and a hotel where an overnight is unavoidable.

05Are you an airline?

No. OnBoard Courier is a courier placement and brokerage business based in Dubai. We vet, train and insure couriers, screen consignments, and buy ordinary passenger seats on scheduled flights. We operate no aircraft and hold no alliance membership, which is exactly what lets us use whichever carrier departs next.

06Can I work for you as a courier from India?

Yes, and we recruit in India deliberately, a network is only fast if somebody vetted is already near the shipper. Flights are paid and there is a fee per completed assignment. Nothing is deducted from that fee and no commission is taken. One thing is charged: the Academy, AED 199 once, AED 208.95 with VAT, returned on top of the fee for your first completed assignment and waived if you have carried on board before.

Gateways, cities and lanes in India

Everything below is what the desk can actually reach in India today: the runways, the cities that have their own page, and the lanes already priced. It is a coverage map, not a brochure, if something is not on it, it is not because we would not fly it, but because nobody has asked yet.

Which Gulf runway the courier leaves from

A hand-carry starts wherever the next usable seat leaves from. These are the four departure points the desk compares for India, with the real distance and air time to Mumbai (BOM). The India, UAE corridor in detail

No corridor on this site has more flights: Dubai, India is the world’s busiest international country pair, with three-hour sectors to the west coast and seats available essentially hourly. The traffic mirrors India’s economy, pharma shipments and reference standards from Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, engineering samples from Pune and Chennai, IT-hardware and prototype movements for Bengaluru, and a constant two-way stream of legal and financial originals between Mumbai and the DIFC.

Gateways we work through

Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR), Chennai (MAA), Kochi (COK) and Coimbatore (CJB). Every India city we serve has its own page under India cities, with sector times and routing notes.

Carriers we book on this corridor

Emirates, Air India, IndiGo, Vistara, flydubai and Air India Express, booked mission by mission, on whichever departure board wins the day. The full carrier directory lives under airlines we fly with.

Industries, companies and paperwork

Semiconductors & electronics, Life sciences & health and Automotive lead the traffic; the demand comes from the ecosystems around Tata Group, Reliance, Infosys, Sun Pharma, Serum Institute and the Bengaluru deep-tech scene. Before anything flies, check customs and documents for this corridor and the entry-requirements guide, the paperwork, not the flight, decides the delivery hour.

  • The consignment stays in the cabin for the whole flight
  • Your consignee, or their broker, collects at the arrival airport

  • A second courier takes over where a visa or a duty limit stops the first
  • A private aircraft where the last airline departure has gone
  • Ground relay across a border when flying is the slower option
  • Priced case by case, in writing, before anything moves

For deadlines that a scheduled seat cannot reach.
