Every desk below exists because something expensive stops when one small
thing is in the wrong country.
01
An aircraft on the ground earns nothing and costs by the hour.
The part that grounded it is usually small enough to carry in one hand, which is the whole reason hand-carry exists in this sector. What is not small is the documentation: an airworthiness release certificate in the right form, issued against the right approval, naming the right part number. A part without its certificate cannot be fitted, which means it has not really arrived. Add the unserviceable core that has to travel back under its own paperwork, and the job is two movements planned as one rather than a delivery.

What stops, A grounded aircraft, a missed departure slot, a rotable that cannot be fitted. What travels, Line-replaceable units, avionics, seals, actuators, tooling, and the core on the return.

A stopped line is measured in minutes, and it is almost never stopped by something large.
It is one component, from one supplier, that a just-in-time system was never designed to buffer. The fix is a seat and a courier, not a bigger truck, and the arithmetic is stark, because an assembly line standing still costs orders of magnitude more per hour than the most expensive way of moving half a kilo. Pre-series and prototype parts add a second problem: they are frequently confidential, occasionally not yet homologated, and must not sit in a warehouse where anybody can photograph them.

03
A sample that arrives warm is not late. It is worthless.
Temperature and time are the same problem in this sector, and both are decided by how many times the consignment is put down. A validated shipper holds for a stated number of hours; every transfer, every apron wait and every customs hold spends part of that budget. So the routing is planned backwards from your hold time with the connection count kept as low as the schedule allows. Where a shipment needs GDP-compliant distribution, active cooling, an import licence or a controlled-substance authorisation, it is coordinated with partners who hold those approvals, we coordinate this work, we do not claim those qualifications.

04
A surgical date is not a delivery window. It is a fixed point.
Either the instrument set, the implant or the loaner is in the hospital before the patient is in the anaesthetic room, or the operation moves, and moving an operation costs a theatre slot, a surgical team and a patient's week. Loan kits make it harder rather than easier, because they travel in both directions, they are frequently sterile-packed, and they belong to somebody who needs them back for the next case. The paperwork that decides the hour here is usually the customs treatment of temporarily imported medical equipment, not the flight.

A fab does not stop cheaply, and the things that stop it are tiny.
Photomasks, wafers, calibration standards and spares for a single tool: light, small, statically sensitive, and frequently worth more than the aircraft seat they travel on by a wide margin. Two things drive the sector towards hand-carry. The first is that ESD-sensitive and vibration-sensitive items should be handled as rarely as possible, and every additional handover in a freight chain is another handling event. The second is export control: some items in this sector carry licence conditions, and a shipment that moves before the licence exists is a compliance problem rather than a logistics one.

What stops, A fab tool, a qualification run, a tape-out schedule. What travels, Photomasks, wafers, probe cards, calibration standards, single-tool spares.
06
A rig day rate does not pause while a part is in transit.
Offshore and remote sites are precisely where the ordinary courier network ends and where the last leg, the helicopter, the crew boat, the site vehicle, is the part nobody planned. That leg has its own schedule, its own weather and its own manifest, and a consignment that misses it waits for the next one regardless of how fast it crossed the world. Downhole tools and sealed sources bring their own restrictions; anything radioactive is declared cargo with a qualified operator, never baggage.

What stops, A drilling programme, a turbine outage, a planned shutdown window. What travels, Downhole electronics, valve and seal kits, control cards, inspection equipment.
07
A ship waits for nobody except a missing part.
The delivery window is not a date, it is the hours the vessel is alongside, and it closes whether or not the part has arrived. Miss it and the consignment chases the ship to the next port, which can mean days and a different country's customs. That is why marine jobs are quoted against a berth window rather than a day, and why ship-spares-in-transit procedures matter so much: used correctly they let a part reach a vessel without a full commercial import, and used incorrectly they strand it in a warehouse two kilometres from the quay.

Some documents only count on paper, in the right hands, before a deadline nobody will move.
An original bill of lading releases cargo and a copy does not. An attested certificate is worth nothing without the physical stamps. A tender that arrives five minutes after the hour is not a late tender, it is not a tender. This is a custody problem rather than a speed problem: what the client is buying is the ability to state afterwards exactly who held the document and when. The consignment travels sealed, the seal is checked at handover, and the handover is recorded against a named person with identification rather than a depot scan.
