On board courier Cabo Verde

Hand-carry delivery between the United Arab Emirates and Cabo Verde: a vetted courier takes the next available seat, keeps your consignment in the aircraft cabin for every sector, and hands it to your recipient in person against signature. Via an African hub, via Praia (RAI), and the lane runs in both directions.

Operational route facts

Last reviewed: August 2026, carrier line-ups and frequencies are indicative and change with seasonal schedules; your quote is priced on the day’s actual flights.

How the flying actually works

Praia (RAI) is served one-stop from the Gulf:

When the primary airport’s timing loses, a late bank, a curfew, a fog morning, the quote compares these alternates with the true road leg included, and names the winner.

Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for Cabo Verde

A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.

Emirates

The night bank out of Terminal 3

Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For Cabo Verde that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.

Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus cities
flydubai

The short sectors, several times a day

From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.

Frequency is the fallback
Etihad

Abu Dhabi as the second runway

Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for Cabo Verde is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.

US preclearance at AUH

The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at Cabo Verde first, at a fare the quote can carry.

Cabo Verde: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

What moves between the UAE and Cabo Verde

Maritime and bunkering, tourism, fisheries and submarine cable landing, that is where Cabo Verde generates genuine hand-carry demand, and it is what shapes the consignments we see on this lane.

Atlantic maritime traffic and subsea cable infrastructure generate urgent marine engineering parts. Getting the island right is the whole game.

How we actually reach Cabo Verde

Via an African hub

Nothing flies Dubai to Cabo Verde nonstop, so the honest answer is a connection, and which connection you choose decides the day. We route through Casablanca (CMN). The Francophone West and Central Africa hub. For former French West Africa this beats routing through Nairobi or Addis.

01

Sector times are 8h 25m Dubai, Casablanca, then approximately 3h 30m to Praia or Sal, flown by TAP via Lisbon, Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca, Cabo Verde Airlines. Several times weekly.

02

Realistic door to door, Dubai collection to consignee signature: 28 to 40 hours Dubai to Praia consignee. That is a working estimate built from the collection, the airport process at both ends and the delivery leg, not the flight time with the awkward parts left out.

The paperwork that decides how fast Cabo Verde goes

Portuguese-language documentation is expected. Sal and Praia are separate islands with separate clearance, sending to the wrong one costs a day.

Commercial invoice

The document customs actually reads. Plain description, the real value, the currency, the terms of sale and both parties in full. “Samples, no commercial value” is not a customs value, and it is the fastest way to turn a twenty-minute clearance at RAI into an afternoon.

Tariff classification

The HS code decides the duty, the permits, and occasionally whether the goods may enter Cabo Verde at all. We would rather agree the classification with you before departure than watch an officer choose one, because the officer's choice is the one that stands.

Temporary admission

Where goods go into Cabo Verde and come out again, demonstration equipment, exhibition pieces, test gear, an ATA Carnet or a documented temporary-import declaration avoids duty and gives the officer something they recognise instantly. It has to be issued before departure; there is no retrospective version.

Duty, tax and who pays

Import duty and tax in Cabo Verde are the consignee's cost unless agreed otherwise in writing, and the terms are settled before departure. A small conversation before the flight, an expensive one after it.

Permits for regulated goods

Batteries, biological material, pharmaceuticals, dual-use items and anything with a licensing regime attached. We establish what Cabo Verde wants for your specific commodity while quoting, because finding out at RAI is far too late.

Proforma for non-sales

Repairs, replacements and samples still need a document with a realistic value. The value is what the goods are worth, not what you would like the duty to be, understating it is a customs offence rather than a negotiating position.

On board courier vs air cargo to Cabo Verde

To be straight about it: air cargo is not a bad service, it is a different one. On a lane like this the difference is not really speed in the air, it is how many times your consignment changes hands, and how many of those handovers can go quietly wrong.

On board courier

One named person from collection to signature. No hold, no handling agent, no transfer between systems. When customs at RAI asks a question, somebody who knows what is in the box is standing there to answer it.

Air cargo & express freight

Cheaper per kilo and entirely sensible for volume. But the consignment sits in a warehouse, moves between agents, and a single query can idle it for a day with nobody present to resolve it.

Questions about Cabo Verde

01How fast can a courier reach Cabo Verde from the UAE?

There is no Dubai nonstop, so the realistic figure is 28 to 40 hours Dubai to Praia consignee door to door, routed through Casablanca. Anyone quoting you a same-day delivery into Cabo Verde from Dubai is either routing through somewhere we have not thought of, or they are guessing.

02Which airport do you use for Cabo Verde?

Nelson Mandela International (RAI) in Praia is the primary gateway. The country's other entry points are SID (Sal). Choosing the right one is part of the quote, not an afterthought, sending a consignment to the wrong gateway can add a domestic sector and a day.

03What does customs look like in Cabo Verde?

Portuguese-language documentation is expected. Sal and Praia are separate islands with separate clearance, sending to the wrong one costs a day.

04Who actually books hand-carry into Cabo Verde?

Mostly maritime and bunkering, tourism, fisheries. Atlantic maritime traffic and subsea cable infrastructure generate urgent marine engineering parts. Getting the island right is the whole game.

05Do you also collect in Cabo Verde and deliver into the UAE?

Yes. Every lane runs in both directions. Where we have a vetted courier already positioned in Cabo Verde there is no outbound leg to pay for, which makes the inbound direction both faster and cheaper. Third-country legs, collect somewhere else, deliver in Cabo Verde, are quoted on request and routed on the fastest connection rather than automatically through Dubai.

06Does the consignment ever go into the hold?

Direct courier custody runs for every sector, that part is the service. Cabin carriage is our preferred configuration and it is what we book wherever the operating airline, the classification of the goods and the security rules allow it. Where they do not, the consignment moves under an approved accompanied process, still documented and still the courier's responsibility, on the journey to Cabo Verde. If something genuinely cannot travel in a cabin we will say so and discuss freight or a charter, rather than accepting the booking and explaining afterwards.

07How is delivery into Cabo Verde proven?

Signature, printed name and an identification reference, timestamped, plus photographs where you have asked for them. It is produced by the courier at the moment of handover in Cabo Verde, not generated by a depot three hours later.

08What cannot travel with a courier?

Undeclared dangerous goods, controlled substances, weapons and weapon parts, counterfeits, unlicensed dual-use items, live animals, and anything whose parties or end use fail sanctions screening. Some regulated categories can travel with the right permit and packing; we tell you which case yours is before you pay, not after.

The Cabo Verde desk, in detail

What actually moves on this lane, how it runs from the Gulf, and what decides the speed at the border, the operational picture behind the quote.

01

An archipelago economy, island by island

Cabo Verde’s activity is not concentrated in one place, and neither is the work. Sal and Boa Vista carry the resort industry, with large hotel estates running their own plant rooms, kitchens, laundries and desalination. Santiago holds Praia, the seat of government, the banks and the regulators. Sao Vicente holds Mindelo, the shipyard and the harbour. Santo Antao and Fogo are agricultural. A consignment routed to the wrong island is not late by an hour, it is late by a flight.

Hotel and resort plant is the steadiest source of hand-carry demand. Reverse osmosis membranes and dosing pumps, chiller boards, lift controllers, commercial refrigeration parts and pool circulation spares fail at inconvenient moments, and a property with several hundred occupied rooms cannot wait for a container. The same applies to generator and switchgear components, since power resilience on the smaller islands is largely a private responsibility.

Fisheries and processing add a second stream. Tuna landing and freezing plants depend on compressors, blast freezer fans and control gear, and a failed condenser is a lost catch. Certification samples, laboratory standards and inspection documentation for export to European buyers travel on the same urgency.

02

The route from the Gulf, and the leg after the leg

Nothing flies direct. From Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah the realistic shape is a European or West African connection, with Lisbon the most common and Casablanca, Madrid and Dakar as alternatives depending on the day. Count the connection wait honestly: the schedules into the islands are built around European departure banks rather than Gulf arrivals, so a comfortable transfer on paper can involve most of a day on the ground.

The gateway is normally Amilcar Cabral International on Sal or Nelson Mandela International at Praia. Which one is correct depends entirely on the final island, and this is the part operators get wrong. Sal is the historic hub and often the simpler arrival, but a consignment for Mindelo or Praia still needs a domestic sector after it.

Inter-island flying is short but capacity-limited, and the domestic schedule does not run at the same density every day. Ferries link several of the islands and are inexpensive, but they answer to swell rather than to a timetable, and crossings can be cancelled outright. Plan on the flight and treat the ferry as a fallback, not as a schedule.

03

Customs, escudos and Portuguese paperwork

Import formalities are handled by the national customs administration under the finance ministry, and the working language of the file is Portuguese. An invoice, a packing breakdown and a description written in Portuguese, or with a Portuguese translation attached, removes most of the avoidable delay. A vague description is the single most common reason a consignment is pulled aside for inspection.

The escudo is pegged to the euro, which makes valuation predictable and removes the currency uncertainty found in many small island markets. It does not remove duty. Goods entering under a repair-and-return or temporary admission rationale need that intent stated at the counter on arrival and supported on the invoice, rather than raised afterwards when the entry has already been made.

Where the consignee is a hotel group, the delivery address matters as much as the description, because the property and the operating company are frequently not the same registered entity. Name the entity that will appear on the declaration, not the brand on the gate.

04

Season, dust and the shape of the week

Tourism runs heavily through the northern winter, and that is precisely when seats into Sal and Boa Vista are hardest to secure at short notice. A courier booking a same-day seat in the high season is competing with charter demand. The quieter months release capacity but thin the frequency.

Dust is a genuine operational factor. Saharan haze drifting off the mainland reduces visibility over the eastern islands during the dry months and occasionally disrupts approaches. The rains, such as they are, fall in a short late-summer window and can cut road access on the mountainous islands.

The clock is Atlantic. The islands sit well behind Gulf time, so a morning departure from the UAE lands at the end of the local working day. Weekend arrivals should be assumed to clear on the following Monday.

Gateways, cities and lanes in Cabo Verde

Everything below is what the desk can actually reach in Cabo Verde today: the runways, the cities that have their own page, and the lanes already priced. It is a coverage map, not a brochure, if something is not on it, it is not because we would not fly it, but because nobody has asked yet.

Which Gulf runway the courier leaves from

A hand-carry starts wherever the next usable seat leaves from. These are the four departure points the desk compares for Cabo Verde, with the real distance and air time to Mindelo (SID). They sit within roughly 150 km of one another, so the map never decides it, the departure bank does. On pure flying time DOH leads at about 9h 37m.

  • The consignment stays in the cabin for the whole flight
  • Your consignee, or their broker, collects at the arrival airport
  • Cleared in person, questions answered at the counter

Best when both ends have people who can reach an airport.
