How the flying actually works

Non-stop links into Paris (CDG) from the Gulf departure bank, the quote names the exact flight and day-of-week validity:

Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for France

A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.

Emirates

The night bank out of Terminal 3

Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For France that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.

Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus cities
flydubai

The short sectors, several times a day

From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.

Frequency is the fallback
Etihad

Abu Dhabi as the second runway

Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for France is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.

US preclearance at AUH

The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at France first, at a fare the quote can carry.

France: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

Why France and the Emirates are one logistics market, not two

Paris and Dubai are connected by one of the busier long-haul corridors into Europe from the Gulf: Air France, Emirates and Etihad between them fly the route several times a day, and the nonstop block time is a comparatively short seven hours, closer to a regional hop than the thirteen- and sixteen-hour legs this network runs into the United States. That proximity does not extend evenly across France itself, though, a consignment from Toulouse, Lyon or Bordeaux still has to reach Charles de Gaulle first, whether by a connecting flight or, more often, by a TGV that is frequently the faster of the two options. The France desk is therefore really two logistics problems in one: a genuinely easy nonstop out of Paris, and a well-worked domestic feeder network behind it.

01

Beneath the flight schedules sits a relationship that has been two-way for longer than most: French involvement in Abu Dhabi's oil industry predates the UAE itself, Total remains a partner in ADNOC's joint ventures today, and Airbus's Toulouse-built aircraft make up a substantial share of the fleets Emirates and Etihad fly, alongside a steady flow of French luxury, cosmetics and defence exports into the Gulf. The investment runs both directions besides, Emirati and Abu Dhabi capital has taken stakes across French real estate, infrastructure and listed companies, while French manufacturers and luxury houses have built out their own regional headquarters and retail presence across Dubai's and Abu Dhabi's free zones. Every one of those relationships generates the same underlying logistics problem: a small, valuable, time-critical consignment that a freight network handles badly and a courier handles well.

02

An estimated 45,000 or more French nationals live in the UAE, concentrated in finance, luxury retail, aviation, hospitality and education, with several French schools operating across Dubai and Abu Dhabi for a community large enough to sustain them. On top of that resident population sits a much larger flow of French business travellers passing through on a given week, aerospace engineers visiting MRO facilities, luxury buyers on sourcing trips, bankers and consultants on client work. Both groups matter to this desk for the same reason: a French passport is one of the strongest travel documents in the world, admitting its holder visa-free or visa-on-arrival to the large majority of countries, which makes a French business traveller an unusually flexible courier-recruit, someone who can be routed through almost any third country a consignment happens to need, not just back and forth on a single lane.

03

The traffic runs both ways, and treating it as a single lane rather than two separate problems is where most logistics companies get the France-UAE relationship wrong. An Airbus supplier in Toulouse sending a flight-critical part to an Emirates Engineering hangar in Dubai, and a Dubai luxury retailer sending a damaged handbag back to the atelier that made it in Paris for restoration, are different industries moving in opposite directions, and both are solved by the same structure: a named, vetted individual who carries the consignment in the cabin, hands it over in person and never lets it out of their own custody. That is the distinction between an on board courier and a freight forwarder, and it is the entire premise of this desk.

Courier or air cargo?

On board courier vs air cargo

Everything on this desk could travel France, UAE as air cargo instead. This is the difference a person in a seat makes.

On board courier

A person in a seat

  • Leaves on the next available flight, often within hours of your call, 24/7.
  • One named courier holds the consignment from collection to signature.
  • Travels in the aircraft cabin wherever the airline, cargo classification and security rules permit it; the transport configuration is confirmed before booking.
  • No warehouse, no consolidation window, no overnight sort.
  • Customs cleared in person, questions answered at the counter, immediately.
  • Same-day delivery is realistic on most sectors out of the UAE.
  • Built for high-value, fragile, temperature-critical goods and originals.
  • Proof of delivery with signature, ID check and a photograph within minutes.
  • A human being you can call at any point of the journey.

Air cargo & express freight

A parcel in a system

  • Waits for the next consolidation and space allocation, not for you.
  • Passes through many hands: hub, build-up, ramp, break-down, delivery agent.
  • Rides in the hold, frequently sitting in a warehouse overnight.
  • Each handover is a queue, and each queue is where hours disappear.
  • Cleared in a batch by a broker; one query can idle the shipment for a day.
  • Next day at best on most lanes, two to three days if it is held.
  • Chain of custody is a scan history, not a person with the box.
  • Signed for by whoever happens to be at the door.
  • Right answer for heavy, bulky or non-urgent freight, and we will say so.

To be straight about it: air cargo is not a bad service, it is a different one. It moves weight cheaply and it does that extremely well. A hand-carry buys back hours, and it is worth paying for exactly when an hour of delay costs more than a seat on a plane, which is the case far more often than most shippers assume, and far less often than most courier companies claim.

How a France assignment actually runs

From the first message to the delivery signature, a France assignment passes through six stages. None of them are automated away, and none of them involve your consignment sitting in a warehouse overnight.

Minute 0 to 15

You tell us what it is

The first conversation is short and specific: contents, declared value, collection address, delivery address in France, and the real deadline rather than the comfortable one. If there are batteries, powders, liquids, biological material or anything regulated in the box, that is the moment to say so, not at the check-in desk.

Minute 15 to 45

We screen it and price it

We check three things at once: whether we may lawfully carry it, whether France will let it in without a permit we do not have, and whether it physically fits an aircraft cabin. Only then do you get a fixed price, and the price includes the ticket, the courier fee, transfers and a hotel where an overnight is unavoidable.

Hour 1 to 3

A named courier is assigned and booked

We name the courier and the flight before you pay, not after. That means a real person with a passport valid well beyond the trip, the visas the France routing needs, and a record of assignments they have already closed cleanly.

Hour 2 to 4

Collection, sealing and documentation

Collection is a documented handover, not a pickup. Identity checked, contents verified against the invoice, seal applied and numbered, photographs taken, and the file opened. From that point one named person holds the consignment until someone in France signs for it.

In flight

The consignment stays in the cabin

It stays in one named courier's documented custody for the whole sector, in the aircraft cabin wherever size, classification, security rules and the operating airline permit it, and otherwise under an approved accompanied process. On the ground at any transit point the courier stays airside with it. There is no depot, no consolidation window and no overnight sort anywhere in the routing to France.

On arrival

Customs, then a signature

At the arrival airport in France the goods are declared properly, a commercial consignment goes through the red channel, and a courier who chooses the green channel to save twenty minutes has committed an offence rather than a shortcut. Delivery follows immediately, against a signed and timestamped receipt.

Who books a courier to France

Hand-carry demand is not evenly spread, it clusters in industries where an hour of delay costs more than the flight. These are the ones that book France most often, and what they send.

Energy, marine and mining

Downhole and subsea electronics, marine spares for a vessel with a sailing window, assay samples with a chain-of-custody requirement, and project equipment on a contractual schedule.

Legal, banking and tender originals

Closing documents, tender submissions, legalised certificates, guarantees and instruments that only count as originals. A scan is not a submission, and a deadline in France is usually a clock on a wall rather than a courtesy.

Life sciences and diagnostics

Clinical trial samples, diagnostic material, reference standards and biologics, most of them with a stability window measured in hours rather than days and a data logger recording every minute of the journey to France.

Media, events and production

Rushes, masters, broadcast hardware and event material with a transmission or a stage time attached, deadlines that do not move because logistics had a difficult day.

Fashion and product samples

Lab dips, lookbooks, couture pieces and pre-production units that have to be in a buyer's hands before the meeting. After the meeting they are worth exactly nothing.

Jewellery, watches and precious goods

Loose stones, finished pieces, movements and bullion documentation, carried in the cabin under one named person's custody and declared properly on arrival in France rather than hopefully.

The paperwork that decides how fast France goes

Nothing delays a hand-carry as reliably as a document that says something different from the box. This is what we prepare with you before the courier leaves, and why each piece matters at the arrival airport in France.

Certificates and permits

Certificates of origin, health and phytosanitary certificates, dangerous goods declarations, export licences for dual-use items, import permits for regulated categories. We identify which of these France wants for your specific commodity at the quoting stage, because discovering it at the arrival airport in France is far too late.

Proforma invoice for non-sales

Repairs, exhibition goods, replacements and samples still need a document with a realistic value on it. The value is what the goods are worth, not what you would like the duty to be, an understated value is a customs offence in France rather than a negotiating position.

Commercial invoice

The document customs actually reads. It needs a plain description of the goods, the real value, the currency, the terms of sale and the full names and addresses of both parties. “Samples, no commercial value” is not a customs value and it is the fastest way to turn a twenty-minute clearance at the arrival airport in France into an afternoon.

Named consignee with authority

Someone in France must be entitled to receive the goods and, where clearance requires it, able to act as importer of record. A delivery address without an authorised person behind it is where otherwise perfect assignments stall.

Seal and photographic record

A numbered tamper-evident seal applied at collection and checked at delivery, with photographs at both ends. It costs nothing and it settles every argument about whether a package was opened between the two points.

Tariff classification

The HS code decides the duty, the permits and sometimes whether the goods may enter France at all. We would rather agree the classification with you before departure than watch an officer choose one for us, because the officer's choice is the one that stands.

What a France courier actually costs, and why

We do not publish a price list, because a fixed table would be a lie: the same box on the same route costs differently at four hours' notice than at two days'. What we can do is be exact about which levers move the number, so nothing in the quote is a surprise.

Weekends, nights and public holidays

We operate around the clock, and a consignment collected at 02:00 on a Friday is a normal assignment rather than a special case. It is priced the same way as any other; what changes is which flights exist, not what we charge for our part.

Size, weight and whether it fits a locker

Anything beyond normal cabin baggage means a second seat, and occasionally two. An extra seat sounds dramatic until you compare it with a charter: it is an order of magnitude cheaper and it moves at the speed of a scheduled flight.

Whether the courier returns immediately

A same-day turnaround, an overnight with a hotel, or a courier who continues to a third country all cost differently. On a France routing the flight schedule usually decides this rather than anybody's preference.

Distance and sector count

The shortest workable routing to France keeps the ticket count, and the risk count, at the minimum. A two-sector routing is cheaper on paper and more expensive in practice, because every connection is a chance to lose the consignment's schedule. We quote the routing we would actually fly, not the cheapest one that technically arrives.

Regulatory profile of the goods

Batteries, biological material, temperature-controlled consignments and anything export-controlled require preparation, sometimes a permit and occasionally a specialist packer. That work is real and it appears in the quote rather than as a surprise at the airport.

How much notice you give us

A seat bought four hours before departure costs what a seat bought four hours before departure costs. Nothing about that is a courier margin, it is simply the airline's pricing curve, and it is the single largest variable in a France quote.

Every quote we send is fixed before departure and contains the flight, the courier's fee, transfers and, where an overnight cannot be avoided, the hotel. The things that can change it afterwards are the things you control: a change of destination, a change of goods, or a delay at your end that costs the booked flight. Duty and tax in France sit with the consignee unless we have agreed otherwise in writing.

What can go wrong on a France assignment, and what we do about it

Every operator has these problems. The difference is whether the answer was decided in advance or invented at the counter. This is our answer to each of them, written down before you need it.

Something needs to continue past France

A second sector, a border crossing or a domestic flight beyond the arrival airport in France is planned as part of the assignment, not handed to a third party on arrival. The chain of custody either holds to the signature or it is not a chain of custody.

The consignment is larger than described

Measured at collection, not at the gate. If it will not fit a locker we buy a seat for it there and then and tell you the revised number before the courier moves, rather than improvising at check-in.

Weather or airspace closes the route

Force majeure does not disappear because a shipment is urgent. What we do is re-plan around it, a different hub, a different carrier, occasionally a different UAE airport, and tell you what the new arrival time is rather than letting you discover it.

The courier is refused boarding

Almost always a document problem: a passport too close to expiry, a missing transit visa, a name on the ticket that does not match the passport. Every one of those is checked at assignment, and it is checked again before the courier leaves for the airport.

The goods turn out to be regulated

Found before departure, this is a repack or a permit. Found at security, it is a lost flight and sometimes a confiscation. It is the reason we ask uncomfortable questions about contents at the very beginning instead of taking a booking politely.

The consignee is unreachable

We confirm the receiving party and a working phone number before the courier departs, and we agree a fallback in France, a second authorised person, or a secure hold, so that a delivery does not fail because someone went into a meeting.

Courier work to and from More questions about the France

The questions clients actually ask before their first assignment, answered without marketing language.

01How is delivery proven?

Signature, printed name and an identification reference, with a timestamp, plus photographs where you have asked for them. It is produced by the courier at the moment of handover in France, not generated by a depot three hours later.

02How quickly can a courier leave for France?

A vetted courier can normally be at a UAE airport within two to four hours of a confirmed booking. The real constraint is not our side, it is the next departure with a seat and a cabin allowance that fits. Because we use all seven UAE airports and buy on the open market rather than through one carrier, that next departure is usually sooner than people expect.

03Are you an airline?

No. OnBoard Courier is a courier placement and brokerage business based in Dubai. We vet, train and insure couriers, screen consignments and buy ordinary passenger seats on scheduled flights. We operate no aircraft, hold no alliance membership and have no exclusive carrier contract, which is exactly what lets us put a courier on whichever airline departs next for France.

04What cannot travel with a courier?

Undeclared dangerous goods, controlled substances, weapons and weapon parts, counterfeits, unlicensed dual-use items, live animals, and anything whose parties or end use fail sanctions screening. Some regulated categories can travel with the right permit and packing; we tell you which case yours is before you pay.

05Does the consignment ever go into the hold?

No. That is the definition of the service rather than a policy we could relax. It travels in the cabin, in the courier's custody, for every sector of the journey to France. If something genuinely cannot travel in a cabin, we will tell you that and discuss freight or a charter instead of pretending.

06What happens if the flight is cancelled?

We rebook. Before departure we already know the next alternatives to France across the carriers we can lawfully use, so a cancellation costs hours rather than a day. You are told the new arrival time as soon as we have it, not after you ask.

07Is the consignment insured?

All-risk cover on the declared value is arranged on request and confirmed in writing before collection. We do not rely on airline liability, because under the Montreal Convention that liability is a small fraction of what most courier consignments are worth.

08Can you collect outside the UAE?

Yes. Third-country assignments, collect in one country, deliver in another, are a normal part of the work, and they are routed through the fastest connection rather than automatically through Dubai. Where a courier already in the region can take it, that is what happens.

09Do you handle customs at the arrival airport in France?

The courier declares the goods in person through the red channel, and where the value or the category warrants it we brief a licensed customs broker in France in advance. Duty and tax are the consignee's cost unless agreed otherwise in writing.

Questions about courier work to and from France

01Do you serve all of France or only the main hub?

All of it. There are 26 France cities on this desk, each with its own page. Where a city has no reliable non-stop from the Emirates we route through the nearest hub and continue by domestic sector or road, with the courier still holding the consignment the whole way. A chain of custody that ends at an airport is not a chain of custody.

02How fast is France to the UAE really?

It depends on the city, each page on this desk states the block time for that specific routing. Door to door, a consignment collected in the morning is normally delivered the same evening on the shorter sectors, and even the longest routings are usually a single day end to end. The binding constraint is almost never the flying, it is how quickly the goods are ready and how clean the paperwork is.

03Which direction do you handle?

Both, plus third-country legs. Outbound from the Emirates into France, inbound from France into the UAE, and France onward through Dubai to Europe, Africa, the Far East or the Americas on one continuous chain of custody.

04What does it cost?

Roughly what a ticket on that route costs, plus the courier fee and the ground work at each end. The largest variable is notice: a seat bought four hours before departure costs what it costs. Every quote is fixed before departure and includes the flight, the fee, transfers and a hotel where an overnight is unavoidable.

05Are you an airline?

No. OnBoard Courier is a courier placement and brokerage business based in Dubai. We vet, train and insure couriers, screen consignments, and buy ordinary passenger seats on scheduled flights. We operate no aircraft and hold no alliance membership, which is exactly what lets us use whichever carrier departs next.

06Can I work for you as a courier from France?

Yes, and we recruit in France deliberately, a network is only fast if somebody vetted is already near the shipper. Flights are paid and there is a fee per completed assignment. Nothing is deducted from that fee and no commission is taken. One thing is charged: the Academy, AED 199 once, AED 208.95 with VAT, returned on top of the fee for your first completed assignment and waived if you have carried on board before.

Gateways, cities and lanes in France

Everything below is what the desk can actually reach in France today: the runways, the cities that have their own page, and the lanes already priced. It is a coverage map, not a brochure, if something is not on it, it is not because we would not fly it, but because nobody has asked yet.

Which Gulf runway the courier leaves from

A hand-carry starts wherever the next usable seat leaves from. These are the four departure points the desk compares for France, with the real distance and air time to Paris (CDG). They sit within roughly 150 km of one another, so the map never decides it, the departure bank does. On pure flying time DOH leads at about 6h 22m.

The France, UAE corridor in detail

Two French cities anchor this desk. Toulouse: Airbus final assembly and its supplier web, where AOG and line-side missions begin or end. Paris: luxury and finance, maisons whose high-value pieces travel in a courier’s custody, and banks whose originals cross to the DIFC overnight. Add Nice in summer, when the Mediterranean yacht season turns superyacht spares into a genuinely urgent trade of their own.

Gateways we work through

Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Lyon (LYS), Toulouse (TLS) and Nice (NCE). Every France city we serve has its own page under France cities, with sector times and routing notes.

Carriers we book on this corridor

Emirates, Air France, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Transavia France, booked mission by mission, on whichever departure board wins the day. The full carrier directory lives under airlines we fly with.

Industries, companies and paperwork

Aviation & aerospace, Banking & legal and Life sciences & health lead the traffic; the demand comes from the ecosystems around Airbus, Safran, Thales, Dassault, Sanofi, LVMH and the Côte d’Azur yachting economy. Before anything flies, check customs and documents for this corridor and the entry-requirements guide, the paperwork, not the flight, decides the delivery hour.

Hand-picked next stops, every card is a live page, not a promise.

Three ways the desk can move France

Same courier, same cabin, different amount of ground work. The desk recommends one of these in the quote and prices the other two if you ask.

The lean one

Airport to airport

  • A courier meets your driver airside at the departure airport
  • The consignment stays in the cabin for the whole flight
  • Your consignee, or their broker, collects at the arrival airport
  • Cleared in person, questions answered at the counter

Best when both ends have people who can reach an airport.

What most clients book

Door to door

  • Collection at your address, sealed and photographed
  • One named courier from that door to the signature
  • Customs cleared in person on arrival, duties handled as agreed
  • Proof of delivery with signature, identity check and photograph

The full chain, one price, one person answerable for it.

When the schedule will not do

Charter and relay

  • A second courier takes over where a visa or a duty limit stops the first
  • A private aircraft where the last airline departure has gone
  • Ground relay across a border when flying is the slower option
  • Priced case by case, in writing, before anything moves

For deadlines that a scheduled seat cannot reach.
