Lombardy supplies a great deal of what keeps those plants running. Italy is one of the two or three largest machine tool producers in the world and the association that represents that industry is headquartered just outside Milan. Italian packaging machinery holds close to a quarter of the world market. The metalworking and foundry base of Brescia and Bergamo, the automotive component makers, and Pirelli's own head office in Milan all sit inside two hours of Malpensa.

Milan · Silao · 24/7Onboard Courier Milan to Silao
Silao is the middle of the Bajío automotive belt and Milan is the middle of the Italian machine and component industry that supplies it. There is no nonstop between them, so this lane is about choosing the connection that gets the item to a plant gate soonest and saying honestly what that costs in hours.
Why the Bajío pulls parts out of Lombardy
Guanajuato is one of the densest concentrations of vehicle and component manufacture in North America, and Silao sits at the centre of it. General Motors runs a truck assembly plant and propulsion operations there, and its engine plant in Silao is the largest it has in Mexico. Volkswagen has an engine plant in the same municipality. Pirelli inaugurated its tyre factory at Silao in 2012, passed fifty million tyres produced by early 2024 and has invested well over nine hundred million dollars in the site. Faurecia, Denso, KYB, Hino and Nestlé Purina are all in the same industrial estate.
The result is a specific and repeating movement. A tyre building drum component, a curing press part, a spindle cartridge, a servo drive, a die set insert, a laboratory instrument for a materials test that has to be signed off before a batch ships. Small, valuable, and standing between a production line and a shift. The person booking it is counting shifts, not kilometres, and will happily accept two connections if the item is at the gate before the morning handover.

The departure boards behind MXP to BJX
A hand-carry on this lane is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once, books the one that lands first and holds the one that leaves next.
The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at Milan to Silao first, at a fare the quote can carry.
Milan to Silao: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.
Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.
There is no nonstop, and pretending otherwise costs a day
Italy has no direct service to central Mexico. Aeroméxico has announced a Mexico City to Milan route intended to start in 2027, subject to approval, and until it operates every movement on this lane connects at least once. The only Italian link to Mexico that flies today is a leisure service between Milan and Cancún, which is more than two thousand kilometres from Silao and is not a useful routing for freight of any kind.
That is worth stating plainly at the front, because a booking desk working from a route map will sometimes assume otherwise and lose half a day discovering it. What matters is not whether a nonstop exists but which one stop or two stop combination puts a courier and an item at a Guanajuato gate first, and that answer changes with the day of the week.
The three routings, compared
Through Madrid to Querétaro. Milan has frequent service to Madrid, and Iberojet flies Madrid to Querétaro nonstop on a widebody, twice a week in the summer season. Querétaro to Silao is about 145 kilometres of good motorway through the Bajío corridor. When the Querétaro departure day lines up, this is normally the earliest handover and the cleanest customs entry, because the item lands at a smaller international arrival with the consignee's broker waiting.
Through a European hub to Mexico City. Milan to Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt, then a daily nonstop into Benito Juárez, then either a domestic sector to Bajío or a road leg of about 336 kilometres. This is available every day, which is its real advantage. The costs are a terminal transfer at Mexico City between two terminals that are not connected airside, and a customs entry in the Valley of Mexico rather than in Guanajuato. Through a United States hub. Bajío is served nonstop from Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles, which looks quick until you remember that there is no airside transit in the United States: the courier is admitted to the country, needs a visa or travel authorisation in advance, and has to reclaim and recheck any hold item.
Guanajuato Puerto Interior and the airport beside it
Bajío International sits between León and Silao, roughly eight kilometres by road from Silao and twenty five from León, with the Guanajuato Puerto Interior estate alongside it. Puerto Interior is built around a rail and road freight hub connected to the airport, which is why so much of the region's manufacturing chose to sit there rather than closer to the cities. For a courier arriving on a domestic sector, the drive from the terminal to most of the estate is under twenty minutes.
The airport carries a wide Mexican domestic network with Volaris using it as a focus city, and international nonstops from four United States hubs. It has no European service and, on current schedules, no prospect of one. That is the structural reason this lane always has a connection in it, and it is also why the last leg is worth planning as carefully as the long haul.
Road distances inside the Bajío
The Bajío corridor runs León, Silao, Irapuato, Salamanca, Celaya and on to Querétaro, and it is joined by motorway the whole way. Silao to León is around twenty five kilometres. Silao to Celaya is about ninety four kilometres. Silao to Querétaro is roughly a hundred and forty five. Mexico City to Silao by road is about three hundred and thirty six kilometres, which is four to five hours in practice rather than the three the distance suggests.
Those numbers decide the routing more often than the flight times do. A Querétaro arrival at six in the evening puts a courier at a Silao gate before nine. A Mexico City arrival at the same hour puts them there some time after midnight if they drive, or the following morning if they wait for the first domestic sector. We quote the whole chain to the gate, with the gate hours, rather than quoting to an airport and letting the consignee work out the rest.
Where the entry is filed and by whom
The item enters Mexico as accompanied baggage wherever the courier first lands, and that is where it clears. A passenger allowance of 500 US dollars applies, with a simplified route at a flat global rate for goods above it and below 3,000 dollars. Industrial parts usually exceed that, so the entry is formal: a pedimento filed by the consignee's agente aduanal against the consignee's importer registration. It is not a courier entry. The simplified regime used by registered parcel companies runs under its own pedimento key and its own registration and does not apply here.
Most of the Guanajuato plants operate under IMMEX, so the broker will normally file a temporary import rather than a definitive one. That suspends duty and value added tax on the basis that the goods feed export production, and it places the item under the plant's inventory control obligations until the entry is discharged. If the item is a tool coming in for a trial and going back out, say so at the outset, because unwinding a definitive import is far harder than filing a temporary one correctly.
Getting out of Italy cleanly
Collection is arranged from the address you give us, whether that is a plant in Brescia, a machine builder in the Varese province, a component supplier near Bergamo or a laboratory in Milan itself. Malpensa is the long haul airport and it is around fifty kilometres north west of the city centre, so the drive time from the eastern Lombardy industrial belt is real and should be counted.
On the paperwork, commercial goods that do not exceed a thousand euros in value or a thousand kilogrammes in net mass can in principle be declared orally at the office of exit, which covers a fair number of small urgent items. Above that a full electronic export declaration is normally needed and the courier must be able to show it. Where an export licence applies it has to exist before the courier reaches the airport. We ask about all of this at enquiry stage because it moves the earliest realistic departure more often than the traffic does.
Services that carry this lane
What flies, and what it means for a courier who has to be at the gate.
- Iberia and Air Europa connect Milan to Madrid and on to Mexico City, the most frequent European combination for this lane.
- Iberojet flies Madrid to Querétaro nonstop on a widebody, twice a week in the summer season, the closest scheduled European arrival to the Bajío.
- Air France and KLM take the item through Paris or Amsterdam to Mexico City, both with daily nonstops.
- Lufthansa connects Milan to Frankfurt or Munich and on to Mexico City, with Frankfurt operating daily.
- Aeroméxico serves Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Rome from Mexico City and carries the domestic sector into Bajío on its own network.
- American Airlines and United fly into Bajío from Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles, fast on paper and dependent on the courier holding United States clearance.
- Volaris uses Bajío as a focus city and carries much of the domestic feed from Mexico City, Tijuana and Monterrey.
Questions about Milan to Silao
01Is there a direct flight from Milan to Mexico?
Not to central Mexico. The only Italian service to Mexico today is a leisure route between Milan and Cancún, which is no use for Guanajuato. Aeroméxico has announced a Mexico City to Milan route intended for 2027, subject to approval. Until it operates, every movement on this lane connects.
02Which airport should the item land at, Bajío or Querétaro?
Whichever gets the courier to your gate first on that day. Bajío is closer to Silao but has no European service, so reaching it means a domestic sector or a United States hub. Querétaro has a nonstop from Madrid twice a week in summer and is about 145 kilometres away by motorway. We price both and tell you which one wins on your date.
03Why avoid the United States routing?
Because there is no airside transit at a United States airport. The courier is admitted to the country, which means a valid visa or travel authorisation held in advance, an immigration queue, and reclaiming and rechecking any hold item. It also creates a third country customs event that a European origin did not need. We will use it when it genuinely wins and say so when it does not.
04Can you deliver to León, Irapuato or Celaya as well as Silao?
Yes. They are all on the same motorway corridor. León is about twenty five kilometres from Silao, Celaya about ninety four, and Irapuato and Salamanca lie between them. The courier stays with the item for the road leg and hands it over against signature at the gate you nominate.
05How long does the whole movement take?
Normally two calendar days door to gate on the Madrid and Querétaro routing, and often the same on a Mexico City routing with an evening arrival and an overnight drive. We quote an expected time at the gate rather than a transit time, because a transit time that ends at an airport is not an answer to the question you are asking.
06What if the item is too heavy for one person?
Then this method does not fit and we will say so. An onboard courier can carry what a passenger can carry in the cabin plus what that passenger can check into the hold on the same booking. Beyond that you need airfreight, with the cut-offs, consolidation and warehouse handling that come with it.
What the desk works out before it quotes Milan to Silao
Computed for MXP to BJX on 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics and from the airport files retrieved 2026-09-07. The distance is great circle between MXP and BJX, the flying time is the model the calculator on this page runs, and the hours are local at each end. Frequencies move with the season, so a Milan to Silao quote is priced on the flights running the day you ask rather than on this page.
How a Milan to Silao movement actually runs
A Milan to Silao movement runs in two legs. The schedule the desk holds carries no nonstop between Milan MXP and Silao BJX, so the lane is built through a change of aircraft, and two of the airports in the network join the two ends. The quickest of the ones dependable enough to plan on is Atlanta ATL, where the weaker of the two legs still runs about once a day. MXP to ATL and ATL to BJX covers 9,823 km against the 9,813 km direct track and takes about 14h 30m once 90 minutes are allowed to change aircraft at an airport that size. The first leg is held by Delta Air Lines and the second by Aeromexico, and where those are not the same airline the two tickets are checked for a single booking reference before the courier leaves, because a self transfer puts the bag back through check in.
What the change of aircraft at Atlanta actually takes, airside or landside, the walk, the re-screening and the local night restrictions, is on the Atlanta transit page and is not repeated on the Milan to Silao lane. One leg of the routing has a reference page of its own, Milan MXP to Atlanta ATL.
The clock on a Milan to Silao movement
| Stage | Milan local | Silao local |
|---|---|---|
| Collection closes | 09:00 | 02:00 |
| At the airport | 10:30 | 03:30 |
| Wheels up | 13:30 | 06:30 |
| On the ground | 04:00 | 21:00 |
| Through arrivals | 05:30 | 22:30 |
| Handed over | 06:15 | 23:15 |
The same ground allowances the calculator on this page starts from, ninety minutes to collect and reach MXP, three hours at the airport before departure, 14h 30m in the air over Atlanta, ninety minutes of arrival formalities at BJX and a forty five minute delivery run. Both columns are local, read for a mid January date, because Milan and Silao do not change their clocks on the same day. Move any of the allowances in the calculator lower down this page and the whole Milan to Silao clock moves with them.
Silao runs 7 hours behind Milan in January, which is why the two columns above do not sit 14h 30m apart. In July the gap is 8 hours instead, because Milan and Silao do not change their clocks together, and a summer booking on this lane is read off the summer figure. Read backwards, a six in the evening handover in Silao would need the collection in Milan closed the day before, which is the shape of MXP to BJX: the aircraft is boarded on one calendar day and the item is handed over in Silao on the next, and a quote that pretends otherwise is a quote that will be missed. Forwards, a nine in the morning collection in Milan reaches the door in Silao at about 23:15 local, after the end of a normal working day, so the handover is either arranged with somebody on site or it waits for the morning.
What gets a courier onto the Milan to Silao lane
The industrial geography the site publishes puts one automotive site within reach of MXP or BJX: Stellantis at Turin Mirafiori. The file names them as public industrial fact and not as anybody's customer, it is checked 2026-09-07, and it is the reason MXP to BJX is a lane at all. That mix is what a hand carry between Milan and Silao usually carries: automotive work moves in small, heavy, expensive pieces that a line is already waiting for, and it is the waiting line rather than the weight of the item that pays for a seat. What the measured network does say about the item is that 9,813 km is a long haul sector, so the consignment stays with one person for 14h 30m of flying and is presented at BJX by that person. Anything inside cabin limits leaves MXP in the cabin and stays there for the whole of it; above that it travels as accompanied checked baggage on the same ticket and is lifted off the belt at BJX by the same courier.
Where a Milan to Silao consignment is entered, and at what hour
A consignment that leaves Milan on this lane is entered at Silao BJX. The held schedule reaches Mexico at 51 airports in all, Mexico City MEX, Cancún CUN, Guadalajara GDL and Monterrey MTY among them, so where the consignee is not in Silao the desk compares the arrival airport before it buys the MXP ticket rather than driving the difference afterwards. The change of aircraft at Atlanta ATL is in the United States, a third country, so the courier stays in transit there and nothing is entered until BJX. That is the cleaner of the two shapes, and it is why a routing over ATL is preferred to one that lands inside Mexico twice when the timings on MXP to BJX are close. The hour matters as much as the paperwork, and on the clock above the courier is through arrivals at Silao BJX at 22:30 local, while an entry into Mexico that lands outside working hours waits for the people who process it, so the desk sets the broker and the receiving contact against that hour before the courier leaves Milan for BJX. What the entry itself needs, the declaration, the broker and the documents, is set out for Mexico on the country desk and is not repeated on every lane that lands at BJX, and the desk checks that position against the actual consignment before it quotes MXP to BJX.
What Milan to Silao costs in courier time
This desk is in Dubai and neither end of MXP to BJX is, so where a courier has to be positioned onto MXP rather than found there, the held schedule puts DXB to MXP at 3.4 times a day over 4,707 km, and that positioning leg is priced into the quote rather than discovered after it. Two of the five UAE gateways reach MXP without a change, which is why the MXP to BJX collection that has to start tomorrow morning in Milan is still worth asking about tonight. At 21h 15m from collection to signature the job is past the sixteen hour duty period a single courier is planned against, so MXP to BJX is quoted with a rest built in or with the courier changed at the interchange, and never as one unbroken shift. By length this is the 57th longest of the 346 lanes the site publishes, at 9,813 km.
What decides whether Milan to Silao goes today
- The interchange: there is no MXP to BJX nonstop, so the movement needs two legs that connect on the same day, and through Atlanta ATL the weaker of them runs about once a day, which is the figure that decides whether the pair of flights exists this afternoon.
- The calendar: the door to door figure is 21h 15m, which on this lane puts the handover in Silao on the day after the collection in Milan, so the decision to make today is which morning it has to reach BJX, not which hour.
- Room to be rebooked: Milan carries about 366.7 scheduled departures a day and Silao about 36.1, so a courier who has to be moved has a great deal to work with at the near end.
- The paperwork: the invoice value, the description and the classification have to agree with what is in the box before the courier leaves Milan for Silao, and that is checked at the collection address, because a mismatch found at BJX is settled at the speed of a broker rather than the speed of an aeroplane.
