On board courier from Detroit to Silao

Del Bajío airport is in Silao, the same municipality as the truck plant, which makes it one of the few Mexican airports that is genuinely next door to the thing it serves. Getting there from Michigan is the hard part: there is no nonstop, so this lane is decided by which connecting bank the courier is put on and how much margin sits inside it.

NonstopNone. Detroit to Del Bajío is a connection through Chicago, Dallas, Houston or Atlanta

Why downtime is costlyThe Silao engine plant supplies Puebla, Chattanooga and Audi, so a stoppage travels
Great-circle track between the departure hub and the destination gateway. The desk picks the runway and the carrier on the day.

Why an engine plant stoppage is worse than an assembly stoppage

Silao holds two plants of very different character. One is a vehicle assembly plant building full size pick ups and their V8 engines and rear wheel drive transmissions, which is high margin output where an idle hour costs an unusual amount of money. The other is a Volkswagen engine plant producing around 420,000 EA888 engines a year, and those engines do not stay in Mexico: they feed Puebla, Chattanooga and Audi.

01

That second fact is the reason this lane is bought. When an assembly plant stops, one plant stops. When an engine plant stops, the plants it supplies start counting down their float, and a problem in Guanajuato becomes a problem in Tennessee and Puebla within days. Buyers who have been through it once do not wait for a scheduled freight service the second time.

02

The Michigan end supplies the fix. General Motors runs its Global Technical Center at Warren, Ford its Product Development Center at Dearborn and Stellantis its North American operations at Auburn Hills, with Bosch, Denso, Magna, Aptiv and Lear all running engineering centres in south east Michigan. A tooling change, a revised control module or a gauge signed off in Michigan on a Monday is regularly needed on a Bajío line on the Tuesday.

The departure boards behind DTW to BJX

A hand-carry on this lane is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once, books the one that lands first and holds the one that leaves next.

from Detroit to Silao: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

Four connecting banks, and how we choose

01

Del Bajío has United States and Canadian service only: Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Chicago, Chicago Midway, Los Angeles, Oakland, Ontario, San Antonio, Atlanta and a handful of smaller points. From Detroit that means a connection, and the realistic choices are Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston or Atlanta. Houston and Dallas between them also reach Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes and Monterrey, which matters when the plan has to change in the air.

02

We choose on connection margin rather than on total elapsed time. A ninety minute connection at a hub that is running an hour late in February is not a connection, it is a hope. Detroit and Chicago are both winter airports, so on a bad forecast we will deliberately take a longer southern routing through Dallas or Houston, and we will explain why the itinerary that looks slower on paper is the one that arrives.

Batteries, and where a hand carry stops

01

Michigan's urgent traffic has shifted towards electric vehicle work, and that runs straight into the limits of what a passenger may carry. Cells, modules, prototype packs and anything with an installed lithium battery are assessed against the passenger rules, which are stricter and more specific than the rules a freight forwarder works to. A battery sample that a forwarder can ship as declared dangerous goods is frequently not something a courier can take at all.

02

The same check applies to items with residual fuel or oil, to compressed gas struts, to strong magnets and to any painted or chemically treated part that arrives with its own safety data sheet. We ask what is inside the case at the first call and we answer honestly, including when the answer is that this item needs a different mode. An item refused at a boarding gate has cost the plant a shift rather than saved one.

Tooling that goes in and has to come out again

01

A large share of Michigan to Bajío traffic is not a sale. It is a die insert, a punch, a check fixture, a coordinate measuring machine artefact or a piece of test equipment that goes in for a trial and comes back. Mexican customs treats that as a temporary import, filed under the plant's own programme where the plant operates under IMMEX, with inputs, fixed assets and returns abroad each carrying their own key and their own deadline.

02

Two things follow. The entry has to say what the movement really is on the way in, because converting it afterwards is slow and a temporary that expires has to be regularised rather than ignored. And the return is planned with the outbound: the same courier can often carry the worn insert or the borrowed gauge back out, but only if the Mexican export side was set up before the item ever landed.

The entry at Del Bajío

01

The airport's customs section sits under the Aduana de Guanajuato, which also runs a section at Celaya, so there is more than one place in the region where an entry can be handled. The cargo area at the airport is part of the Puerto Interior inland port, with rail and road connections, which is useful context even though a hand carry uses none of it: the courier's item comes off the aircraft as accompanied baggage and is declared by the passenger.

02

Beyond the traveller's allowance of 500 US dollars, commercial goods enter on a pedimento filed by the consignee's agente aduanal. Since the customs reform took effect on 1 January 2026, brokers carry broader and joint liability and must report operations that contravene the tax authority's criteria, so expect more questions on an unfamiliar hand carried item. The way through that is to send the specification and the classification to the broker while the courier is still in Michigan.

Silao, and the plants around it

01

Del Bajío is unusually convenient at the delivery end because it is in Silao itself, so the truck plant and the engine plant are a short run from the terminal. León is close by to the west, with Irapuato and Salamanca to the south east, where the Mazda plant sits, and Celaya beyond that, where Honda builds vehicles and transmissions. Toyota at Apaseo el Grande is at the eastern edge of the region and is sometimes quicker from Querétaro.

02

That last point is worth checking rather than assuming. Querétaro Intercontinental is around 123 km from Del Bajío by road and has its own customs office and better connecting service on some banks, so for a delivery at the eastern end of the Bajío it can be the earlier arrival even though it is the wrong airport on a map. We compare arrival time at the plant gate, not the distance from the terminal.

Services that carry this lane

What flies, and what it means for a courier who has to be at the gate.

  • American reaches Del Bajío from Dallas Fort Worth, which is the southern connecting option and the most weather resistant in winter.
  • United reaches Del Bajío from Houston and also serves Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Monterrey from the same hub if the plan has to change.
  • Delta connects Detroit to Atlanta and Atlanta to Del Bajío, which keeps the whole itinerary with one carrier.
  • Volaris and Viva Aerobus fly Del Bajío from Chicago and other United States cities, useful on a late release when the main carriers have gone.
  • Aeroméxico connects Del Bajío through Mexico City, which is the fallback when the direct United States banks are closed.

Questions about Detroit to Silao

01Is there a direct flight from Detroit to Del Bajío?

No. Del Bajío has United States and Canadian service only, and Detroit is not on the list. Every movement on this lane connects through Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston or Atlanta. We pick the bank with the honest connection margin rather than the one with the best elapsed time on paper.

02Can the courier carry a battery module or a prototype pack?

Usually not. Lithium cells, modules and packs are assessed against the rules that apply to a passenger, which are stricter than the freight rules, and many electric vehicle items simply cannot travel this way. Tell us exactly what the item is at the first call and we will say straight away whether a courier is the right mode.

03Our die insert is going in for a trial and coming back. How does that work?

As a temporary import, filed by the plant's broker under the plant's own programme, with a deadline for return or regularisation. We need the plant's registration and broker details before departure, and we plan the return leg at the same time as the outbound, because the export side has to be prepared in advance.

04Should we land at Del Bajío or Querétaro?

Del Bajío for Silao, León, Irapuato and Salamanca. Querétaro is about 123 km away, has its own customs office, and is sometimes the earlier arrival for Apaseo el Grande and Celaya or when the connecting bank suits better. We check both against the plant gate rather than assuming the nearer airport wins.

05What has changed with Mexican brokers this year?

The reform effective 1 January 2026 removed exclusions from direct liability, so brokers now carry broader and joint liability and must report operations contravening the tax authority's criteria. In practice they ask more questions about an unusual hand carried item. Sending the technical description and classification in advance is how you keep that from costing a shift.

06Do you have people in Michigan?

No. OnBoard Courier is a Dubai licensed placement business: we take the enquiry, price it, build the routing, arrange the customs plan and place the assignment with an operating partner who provides and briefs the courier. We operate no aircraft and hold no customs licence in the United States or Mexico.

What the desk works out before it quotes Detroit to Silao

Computed for DTW to BJX on 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics and from the airport files retrieved 2026-09-07. The distance is great circle between DTW and BJX, the flying time is the model the calculator on this page runs, and the hours are local at each end. Frequencies move with the season, so a Detroit to Silao quote is priced on the flights running the day you ask rather than on this page.

How a Detroit to Silao movement actually runs

A Detroit to Silao movement runs in two legs. The schedule the desk holds carries no nonstop between Detroit DTW and Silao BJX, so the lane is built through a change of aircraft, and 12 of the airports in the network join the two ends. The quickest of the ones dependable enough to plan on is Houston IAH, where the weaker of the two legs still runs 4 times a day. DTW to IAH and IAH to BJX covers 2,905 km against the 2,904 km direct track and takes about 5h 58m once 75 minutes are allowed to change aircraft at an airport that size. The first leg is held by Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and Mesa Airlines and the second by United Airlines and VivaAerobus, and where those are not the same airline the two tickets are checked for a single booking reference before the courier leaves, because a self transfer puts the bag back through check in. Mexico City MEX sits about 305 km from Silao, which does hold a nonstop to DTW about once a day, so on this lane the desk prices the road leg to MEX against the connection before it books either. 5 of the airports that join DTW and BJX clear that dependability line, so the routing has somewhere to go when the first one is full.

Behind IAH the next usable interchange is Dallas-Fort Worth DFW at about 6h 19m gate to gate, so the booking has two hubs to try before the movement has to wait for tomorrow. What the change of aircraft at Houston actually takes, airside or landside, the walk, the re-screening and the local night restrictions, is on the Houston transit page and is not repeated on the Detroit to Silao lane. Both legs of the routing have a reference page of its own, Detroit DTW to Houston IAH and Houston IAH to Silao BJX.

The same ground allowances the calculator on this page starts from, ninety minutes to collect and reach DTW, three hours at the airport before departure, 5h 58m in the air over Houston, ninety minutes of arrival formalities at BJX and a forty five minute delivery run. Both columns are local, read for a mid January date, because Detroit and Silao do not change their clocks on the same day. Move any of the allowances in the calculator lower down this page and the whole Detroit to Silao clock moves with them.

Silao runs 1 hour behind Detroit in January, which is why the two columns above do not sit 5h 58m apart. In July the gap is 2 hours instead, because Detroit and Silao do not change their clocks together, and a summer booking on this lane is read off the summer figure. Read backwards, a consignment that has to be signed for in Silao before six in the evening has to be closed and in the courier's hands in Detroit by about 06:17 local. That hour, not the 5h 58m in the air, is the number a planner in Detroit needs, because it is the moment after which the job becomes a next day job. Forwards, a nine in the morning collection in Detroit reaches the door in Silao at about 20:43 local, after the end of a normal working day, so the handover is either arranged with somebody on site or it waits for the morning.

What gets a courier onto the Detroit to Silao lane

The industrial geography the site publishes puts one automotive site within reach of DTW or BJX: Ford at Dearborn and Cologne. The file names them as public industrial fact and not as anybody's customer, it is checked 2026-09-07, and it is the reason DTW to BJX is a lane at all. That mix is what a hand carry between Detroit and Silao usually carries: automotive work moves in small, heavy, expensive pieces that a line is already waiting for, and it is the waiting line rather than the weight of the item that pays for a seat. What the measured network does say about the item is that 2,904 km is a medium haul sector, so the consignment stays with one person for 5h 58m of flying and is presented at BJX by that person. Anything inside cabin limits leaves DTW in the cabin and stays there for the whole of it; above that it travels as accompanied checked baggage on the same ticket and is lifted off the belt at BJX by the same courier.

Where a Detroit to Silao consignment is entered, and at what hour

A consignment that leaves Detroit on this lane is entered at Silao BJX. The held schedule reaches Mexico at 51 airports in all, Mexico City MEX, Cancún CUN, Guadalajara GDL and Monterrey MTY among them, so where the consignee is not in Silao the desk compares the arrival airport before it buys the DTW ticket rather than driving the difference afterwards. The change of aircraft at Houston IAH is in the United States, a third country, so the courier stays in transit there and nothing is entered until BJX. That is the cleaner of the two shapes, and it is why a routing over IAH is preferred to one that lands inside Mexico twice when the timings on DTW to BJX are close. The hour matters as much as the paperwork, and on the clock above the courier is through arrivals at Silao BJX at 19:58 local, while an entry into Mexico that lands outside working hours waits for the people who process it, so the desk sets the broker and the receiving contact against that hour before the courier leaves Detroit for BJX. What the entry itself needs, the declaration, the broker and the documents, is set out for Mexico on the country desk and is not repeated on every lane that lands at BJX, and the desk checks that position against the actual consignment before it quotes DTW to BJX.

The other ways into Mexico on DTW to BJX

A consignee on this lane is not always in Silao, so these are the other airports in Mexico that DTW reaches without a change of aircraft on the held schedule, with the great circle distance from BJX beside each one. The closest of them is Querétaro QRO at 141 km from BJX, running 5 times a week out of DTW, which on a delivery outside the city is often the shorter total journey even though it looks like the wrong airport.

What Detroit to Silao costs in courier time

At 12h 43m from collection to signature the whole of DTW to BJX fits inside the sixteen hour duty period a single courier is planned against, which is why one named person can stay with the item from the collection address to the door. By length this is the 279th longest of the 346 lanes the site publishes, at 2,904 km.

What decides whether Detroit to Silao goes today

  • The interchange: there is no DTW to BJX nonstop, so the movement needs two legs that connect on the same day, and through Houston IAH the weaker of them runs 4 times a day, which is the figure that decides whether the pair of flights exists this afternoon.
  • The collection hour: for a handover in Silao before six the same evening the item has to be in the courier's hands in Detroit by about 06:17 local, and after that hour the honest answer on DTW to BJX is tomorrow.
  • Room to be rebooked: Detroit carries about 450.9 scheduled departures a day and Silao about 36.1, so a courier who has to be moved has a great deal to work with at the near end.
  • The paperwork: the invoice value, the description and the classification have to agree with what is in the box before the courier leaves Detroit for Silao, and that is checked at the collection address, because a mismatch found at BJX is settled at the speed of a broker rather than the speed of an aeroplane.
