On board courier for marine & shipping

A ship waits for nobody except a missing part. The delivery window is not a date, it is the hours the vessel is alongside, and it closes whether or not the spare has arrived.

Departures from DXB · DWC · AUH · SHJ · RKT · FJR · AAN, whichever leaves first

One person beats a parcel networkfor marine shipping

The freight chain is not slow because aircraft are slow, it is slow because a consignment waits at every handover. A courier removes the queues, not the kilometres.

Tell us what has to fly. We answer with a flight and a price.

Five short questions. A dispatcher replies with a named departure, the delivery hour and one fixed price, day and night.

What goes wrong

A main engine component fails at sea. The vessel has a scheduled call in three days and the part has to be on the quay when she is. Miss the window and the cost is not the spare, it is the deviation, the berth and the schedule behind it.

Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for for marine shipping

A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.

Emirates

The night bank out of Terminal 3

Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For for marine shipping that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.

Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus cities
flydubai

The short sectors, several times a day

From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.

Frequency is the fallback
Etihad

Abu Dhabi as the second runway

Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for for marine shipping is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.

US preclearance at AUH

The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at for marine shipping first, at a fare the quote can carry.

for marine shipping: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

What actually travels in the cabin

ConsignmentWhy it is like this
Engine and auxiliary sparesInjectors, governors, control cards, the specific piece that failed.
Navigation and comms equipmentItems a vessel may not legally sail without.
Class survey documentsOriginals for a surveyor who needs paper, not a scan.
Crew certificatesWhere a crew change depends on an original document.
Sealing and gasket setsCheap, light, and the reason a repair cannot be completed.

Why hand-carry rather than air freight

The UAE is one of the world's busiest bunkering and ship-repair corridors, Jebel Ali, Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, so a great deal of marine spares traffic already passes through here. Hand-carry fits the pattern of the industry: the deadline is the port call, and a courier can be routed to whichever port the vessel actually reaches rather than the one on the original plan.

The paperwork that decides the hour

On this trade the flight is rarely what costs you the day. Documentation is. These are the papers that come up again and again, get them right before departure and the rest is a timetable problem.

DocumentWhat it does
Ship's spares in transit declarationThe customs regime that lets spares reach a vessel without normal import duty.
Vessel and voyage detailsName, IMO number, agent, ETA. Without them the transit relief does not apply.
Commercial invoiceMarked as ship's spares, with the vessel named.
Agent's authorityThe local agent normally clears and receives; they need to be expecting it.

Where our service stops

Spares containing residual fuel or oil, pressurised accumulators and larger battery banks are regulated cargo, not baggage. So is anything that has to move as a full unit rather than a case. Those go by declared air cargo with a partner qualified for the class.

OnBoard Courier is a coordination and matching platform: we put a vetted courier and a seat against your consignment. Regulated transport that needs a licence, an approval or specialist packaging is arranged with partners who hold those qualifications. We would rather tell you that at the quotation than at the check-in desk.

Where these lanes usually run

The UAE is inside three hours' flying of the whole Gulf, one connection from most of Africa and South Asia, and a direct sector from Europe, East Asia and the Americas. These are the desks and pages most used on this trade.

More questions about marine & shipping

01Can you deliver to a vessel alongside?

We deliver to the port agent or the ship chandler against signature, which is how spares reach a vessel in practice. Quay access is controlled by the port authority and granted to accredited parties, not to a visiting courier. Name your agent at booking and we will route to them.

02What is ship's spares in transit, and does it matter?

It matters a great deal. It is a customs regime that treats spares destined for a named vessel as goods in transit rather than imports, which avoids duty and shortens clearance. It requires the vessel name, IMO number and voyage on the paperwork from the start, it cannot be applied retrospectively.

03The vessel's schedule changed. Can the delivery be redirected?

Usually yes, and it is a normal part of this trade. Tell us as early as you can, a change of destination country means new documentation and possibly a new flight, so the earlier the redirect, the cheaper it is.

04Can you carry original class certificates?

Yes. Original documents are one of the clearest cases for hand-carry: they cannot be reissued quickly, a scan will not satisfy a surveyor, and they stay with one person the whole way.

The vessel sails when the part arrives

01

Marine urgent logistics has a deadline format all of its own: the sailing window. A main-engine governor, a separator bowl or a certificate set has to be alongside before the pilot boards, in whatever port the voyage plan says, which changes. The saving grace is a purpose-built customs procedure: ship spares in transit, which lets a part clear to a named vessel quickly when the file is right. Getting that file right is most of the job.

02

From Dubai we cover the region’s busiest calls, Jebel Ali, Fujairah’s anchorage and bunkering fleet, Khor Fakkan, Sohar, Duqm’s drydock, Dammam and Jeddah, and fly the long legs to wherever the vessel actually is, agent details in hand. Deliveries finish on a quay, a launch or a gangway against the chief engineer’s signature, at whatever hour the tide dictates.

Three ways the desk can move for marine shipping

Same courier, same cabin, different amount of ground work. The desk recommends one of these in the quote and prices the other two if you ask.

The lean one

Airport to airport

  • A courier meets your driver airside at the departure airport
  • The consignment stays in the cabin for the whole flight
  • Your consignee, or their broker, collects at the arrival airport
  • Cleared in person, questions answered at the counter

Best when both ends have people who can reach an airport.

What most clients book

Door to door

  • Collection at your address, sealed and photographed
  • One named courier from that door to the signature
  • Customs cleared in person on arrival, duties handled as agreed
  • Proof of delivery with signature, identity check and photograph

The full chain, one price, one person answerable for it.

When the schedule will not do

Charter and relay

  • A second courier takes over where a visa or a duty limit stops the first
  • A private aircraft where the last airline departure has gone
  • Ground relay across a border when flying is the slower option
  • Priced case by case, in writing, before anything moves

For deadlines that a scheduled seat cannot reach.
