It also changes the connection. Almost every routing to Mexico goes through an EU hub, so the item has to remain in transit while it passes through. We build the connection airside and through check anything that travels in the hold, so the goods are not presented to EU customs on the way past. A routing that forces the courier to reclaim and recheck at a European hub is a routing we avoid on this lane, even when the timings look attractive.

ZRHMTY
Zurich · Monterrey · 24/7Onboard Courier Zurich to Monterrey
Most urgent movements out of Switzerland are spares for machinery that a Mexican plant bought years ago and cannot source anywhere else. This lane covers the collection, the Swiss export, a courier booked through a European hub, and a signed handover at a gate in Nuevo León or Coahuila.
Why a Swiss origin is not simply a European origin
Switzerland is not in the European Union and not in its customs union. That single fact changes the front half of every movement. Goods leaving Zurich are exported from a third country, which means a Swiss export declaration lodged electronically and a reference the courier can produce, and it means the exporter needs proof of export in order to zero rate the Swiss value added tax. None of that is difficult. All of it takes time that nobody allowed for when they assumed Zurich behaved like Frankfurt.
The demand itself is consistent. Switzerland exports precision machining equipment, textile and food processing machinery, packaging lines, laboratory and measuring instruments, medical devices and rail components. Monterrey and the plants around it bought a great deal of that equipment and now need parts for it. A spindle bearing set, a proprietary encoder, a filling valve, a control card that a Swiss builder still makes and nobody else does. It is not glamorous cargo and it stops production just as effectively as anything else.

The departure boards behind ZRH to MTY
A hand-carry on this lane is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once, books the one that lands first and holds the one that leaves next.
The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at Zurich to Monterrey first, at a fare the quote can carry.
Zurich to Monterrey: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.
Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.
Getting the item out of Switzerland
A courier collects from the address you name, at whatever hour the item is signed out. Zurich Airport is about ten kilometres north of the city, and the Swiss industrial belt sits close around it: the machine and precision engineering shops of Aargau, Zug and Winterthur, the medtech and instrument makers between Zurich and Solothurn, the pharmaceutical and life science base around Basel about ninety kilometres away, and the Rhine valley towards Schaan and Vorarlberg. Almost all of it is inside two hours by road.
The export declaration is what governs the earliest realistic departure, not the drive. It has to be lodged, the reference has to be with the courier, and the exporter has to be in a position to keep the proof of export for its own value added tax. Where an export licence or a dual use assessment applies, it has to be finished before the courier reaches the airport. We ask for the declaration status at enquiry stage, because it is the thing most often outstanding when everything else is ready.
The carnet question
When tools, test rigs or measuring equipment are going in and coming back out, somebody usually suggests an ATA carnet. Sometimes that is right and sometimes it is not. Coverage and accepted purposes vary by destination country and by what the goods will actually be used for, and a carnet that the border will not work with is worse than no carnet, because the fallback was never prepared and the courier is standing at a counter at midnight.
The answer is to ask the consignee's own customs broker whether they will handle this movement on a carnet, and to ask before the courier leaves Zurich rather than after landing. If the answer is no, the normal route is a temporary import filed as a pedimento, with the export back out referencing it. Either way the decision belongs to the importer and their broker. What we do is make sure it has been taken by somebody, and that the courier has whatever document the answer produced.
Reaching Monterrey without a nonstop
There is no direct service from Switzerland to mainland Mexico. The only Swiss route to the country is a leisure service from Zurich to Cancún, which is over two thousand kilometres from Monterrey and no use here. Every movement connects, and the question is where.
The two best one stop options put the item on the ground at Monterrey itself. Zurich to Paris, then the Aeroméxico nonstop to Monterrey, around three times a week through the year. Zurich to Madrid, then Iberia or Aeroméxico, each around three times a week. Between them they cover most days but not all. When neither is flying, the fallback is a European hub to Mexico City, which is daily from Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam and Madrid, followed by a domestic sector north. That routing puts the customs entry in the Valley of Mexico and requires a transfer between two Mexico City terminals that are not joined airside, so the ground time has to be built for it.
The entry into Mexico
The item arrives as accompanied baggage with the courier present. A passenger has an allowance of 500 US dollars, and there is a simplified route at a flat global rate for goods above that and below 3,000 dollars, which occasionally covers a small spare. Most machine parts on this lane are worth more, so the entry is formal: a pedimento filed by the consignee's agente aduanal against the consignee's importer registration, and the importer has to be current on the importers registry for it to proceed at all.
A large share of the receiving plants in Nuevo León and Coahuila hold IMMEX authorisations, and the broker will usually file a temporary import against the programme rather than a definitive one. Duty and value added tax are then suspended, on the understanding that the goods feed export production, and the item joins the plant's inventory control records until the entry is discharged. That is why the description and the classification have to be right rather than roughly right: somebody has to reconcile them months later. This is not a courier entry, and the simplified regime that registered parcel companies use does not apply to an accompanied import.
What Monterrey needs it for
Nuevo León is the industrial core of Mexico and the demand is broader than automotive. The estates at Apodaca, Escobedo, Santa Catarina, San Nicolás de los Garza and Guadalupe carry appliance and air conditioning manufacture, glass, cement, steel processing, wire and cable, packaging and food and beverage production alongside the vehicle and component plants. Almost all of them run at least some European machinery, and European machinery needs European parts.
The airport at Apodaca is inside that industrial belt rather than outside it, which is unusually convenient. A delivery to an Apodaca or Escobedo plant is normally under half an hour from the customs counter. Guadalupe and San Nicolás are twenty to thirty minutes further, and Santa Catarina is on the other side of the city. Saltillo and Ramos Arizpe in Coahuila are about eighty five kilometres west on the 40D, roughly an hour and a half from the terminal.
Handover, and the part that goes home
Delivery is against signature to a named person at the address you give us. For a machine spare that is normally the maintenance department rather than a central goods inwards, and naming the individual and the gate saves the hour that otherwise disappears at a security barrier. The courier does not leave the item with a guard unless you have told us in writing that this is acceptable.
Where the failed unit has to go back to Switzerland for assessment, that is a separate movement with its own treatment at both ends. Out of Mexico it is normally a temporary export referencing the entry the replacement came in on. Into Switzerland it needs the right relief so that the owner does not pay import charges on something it already owned. We will quote the return alongside the outbound if you tell us it exists, and the same courier can often carry both legs.
Services that carry this lane
What flies, and what it means for a courier who has to be at the gate.
- Aeroméxico flies Paris to Monterrey nonstop around three times a week, and Zurich to Paris is a short and frequent sector.
- Iberia flies Madrid to Monterrey nonstop three times a week on an Airbus A330, added in June 2026.
- Aeroméxico also flies Madrid to Monterrey, which widens the Spanish option on some days.
- Lufthansa connects Zurich to Frankfurt or Munich and on to Mexico City, with Frankfurt operating daily.
- Air France and KLM take the item through Paris or Amsterdam to Mexico City when the Monterrey nonstops have gone.
- Iberia and Air Europa fly Madrid to Mexico City daily, the most frequent fallback of all.
- American Airlines, United and Delta reach Monterrey from Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Chicago and Atlanta, quick but requiring the courier to hold United States clearance in advance.
Questions about Zurich to Monterrey
01Is there a direct flight from Zurich to Mexico?
Only a leisure service from Zurich to Cancún, which is around two thousand kilometres from Monterrey and no help on this lane. Every movement to Monterrey connects, normally through Paris or Madrid where there are nonstops into Monterrey itself, or through a European hub to Mexico City.
02Does the Swiss export declaration slow things down?
It adds a step that a movement starting inside the European Union does not have. It is routine during Swiss working hours and awkward outside them. The practical effect is on the earliest realistic departure rather than on the total transit, and it is why we ask about the declaration before we quote a collection window.
03Should we use an ATA carnet?
Ask the consignee's customs broker before committing to one. Carnet coverage and accepted purposes vary by country and by intended use, and a carnet the border will not work with leaves you worse off than a properly filed temporary import. If the broker says no, the normal route is a pedimento filed as a temporary import with the return referencing it.
04Where does the item clear customs?
Wherever the courier first enters Mexico. On the Paris or Madrid routings that is Monterrey, with the consignee's broker attending there. On a Mexico City routing it is Benito Juárez, and the item travels north afterwards as a domestic movement. We tell you which before booking, because some brokers are set up for one and not the other.
05Can the courier stay airside at the European connection?
That is how we build it. The connection is airside and anything travelling in the hold is through checked, so the goods remain in transit rather than being presented to EU customs on the way past. Routings that force a reclaim and recheck at a European hub are avoided on this lane even when the timings look good.
06How quickly can a courier be on their way?
Once the item is released and the export declaration is lodged, the limiting factor is the next suitable departure out of Zurich and the connection behind it. In practice an item released in the Swiss morning makes a same day departure, and one released late in the afternoon usually goes the following morning. We say which before anyone is booked.
What the desk works out before it quotes Zurich to Monterrey
Computed for ZRH to MTY on 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics and from the airport files retrieved 2026-09-07. The distance is great circle between ZRH and MTY, the flying time is the model the calculator on this page runs, and the hours are local at each end. Frequencies move with the season, so a Zurich to Monterrey quote is priced on the flights running the day you ask rather than on this page.
How a Zurich to Monterrey movement actually runs
A Zurich to Monterrey movement runs in two legs. The schedule the desk holds carries no nonstop between Zurich ZRH and Monterrey MTY, so the lane is built through a change of aircraft, and 14 of the airports in the network join the two ends. The quickest of the ones dependable enough to plan on is Chicago ORD, where the weaker of the two legs still runs about once a day. ZRH to ORD and ORD to MTY covers 9,250 km against the 9,204 km direct track and takes about 13h 47m once 90 minutes are allowed to change aircraft at an airport that size. The first leg is held by SWISS and United Airlines and the second by United Airlines and VivaAerobus, and where those are not the same airline the two tickets are checked for a single booking reference before the courier leaves, because a self transfer puts the bag back through check in. 8 of the airports that join ZRH and MTY clear that dependability line, so the routing has somewhere to go when the first one is full.
Behind ORD the next usable interchange is Atlanta ATL at about 13h 48m gate to gate, so the booking has two hubs to try before the movement has to wait for tomorrow. What the change of aircraft at Chicago actually takes, airside or landside, the walk, the re-screening and the local night restrictions, is on the Chicago transit page and is not repeated on the Zurich to Monterrey lane. Both legs of the routing have a reference page of its own, Zurich ZRH to Chicago ORD and Chicago ORD to Monterrey MTY.
The clock on a Zurich to Monterrey movement
| Stage | Zurich local | Monterrey local |
|---|---|---|
| Collection closes | 09:00 | 02:00 |
| At the airport | 10:30 | 03:30 |
| Wheels up | 13:30 | 06:30 |
| On the ground | 03:17 | 20:17 |
| Through arrivals | 04:47 | 21:47 |
| Handed over | 05:32 | 22:32 |
The same ground allowances the calculator on this page starts from, ninety minutes to collect and reach ZRH, three hours at the airport before departure, 13h 47m in the air over Chicago, ninety minutes of arrival formalities at MTY and a forty five minute delivery run. Both columns are local, read for a mid January date, because Zurich and Monterrey do not change their clocks on the same day. Move any of the allowances in the calculator lower down this page and the whole Zurich to Monterrey clock moves with them.
Monterrey runs 7 hours behind Zurich in January, which is why the two columns above do not sit 13h 47m apart. In July the gap is 8 hours instead, because Zurich and Monterrey do not change their clocks together, and a summer booking on this lane is read off the summer figure. Read backwards, a six in the evening handover in Monterrey would need the collection in Zurich closed the day before, which is the shape of ZRH to MTY: the aircraft is boarded on one calendar day and the item is handed over in Monterrey on the next, and a quote that pretends otherwise is a quote that will be missed. Forwards, a nine in the morning collection in Zurich reaches the door in Monterrey at about 22:32 local, after the end of a normal working day, so the handover is either arranged with somebody on site or it waits for the morning.
What gets a courier onto the Zurich to Monterrey lane
The industrial geography the site publishes puts three pharmaceutical and life science sites within reach of ZRH or MTY: Novartis at Basel, Roche at Basel and Kaiseraugst and Lonza at Visp and Basel. The file names them as public industrial fact and not as anybody's customer, it is checked 2026-09-07, and it is the reason ZRH to MTY is a lane at all. That mix is what a hand carry between Zurich and Monterrey usually carries: pharmaceutical and life science work moves in small, heavy, expensive pieces that a line is already waiting for, and it is the waiting line rather than the weight of the item that pays for a seat. What the measured network does say about the item is that 9,204 km is a long haul sector, so the consignment stays with one person for 13h 47m of flying and is presented at MTY by that person. Anything inside cabin limits leaves ZRH in the cabin and stays there for the whole of it; above that it travels as accompanied checked baggage on the same ticket and is lifted off the belt at MTY by the same courier.
Where a Zurich to Monterrey consignment is entered, and at what hour
A consignment that leaves Zurich on this lane is entered at Monterrey MTY. The held schedule reaches Mexico at 51 airports in all, Mexico City MEX, Cancún CUN, Guadalajara GDL and Tijuana TIJ among them, so where the consignee is not in Monterrey the desk compares the arrival airport before it buys the ZRH ticket rather than driving the difference afterwards. The change of aircraft at Chicago ORD is in the United States, a third country, so the courier stays in transit there and nothing is entered until MTY. That is the cleaner of the two shapes, and it is why a routing over ORD is preferred to one that lands inside Mexico twice when the timings on ZRH to MTY are close. The hour matters as much as the paperwork, and on the clock above the courier is through arrivals at Monterrey MTY at 21:47 local, while an entry into Mexico that lands outside working hours waits for the people who process it, so the desk sets the broker and the receiving contact against that hour before the courier leaves Zurich for MTY. What the entry itself needs, the declaration, the broker and the documents, is set out for Mexico on the country desk and is not repeated on every lane that lands at MTY, and the desk checks that position against the actual consignment before it quotes ZRH to MTY.
What Zurich to Monterrey costs in courier time
This desk is in Dubai and neither end of ZRH to MTY is, so where a courier has to be positioned onto ZRH rather than found there, the held schedule puts AUH to ZRH at 3.4 times a day over 4,779 km, and that positioning leg is priced into the quote rather than discovered after it. Two of the five UAE gateways reach ZRH without a change, which is why the ZRH to MTY collection that has to start tomorrow morning in Zurich is still worth asking about tonight. At 20h 32m from collection to signature the job is past the sixteen hour duty period a single courier is planned against, so ZRH to MTY is quoted with a rest built in or with the courier changed at the interchange, and never as one unbroken shift. By length this is the 81st longest of the 346 lanes the site publishes, at 9,204 km.
What decides whether Zurich to Monterrey goes today
- The interchange: there is no ZRH to MTY nonstop, so the movement needs two legs that connect on the same day, and through Chicago ORD the weaker of them runs about once a day, which is the figure that decides whether the pair of flights exists this afternoon.
- The calendar: the door to door figure is 20h 32m, which on this lane puts the handover in Monterrey on the day after the collection in Zurich, so the decision to make today is which morning it has to reach MTY, not which hour.
- The night at Zurich: scheduled movements are restricted between 23:00 and 06:00 local, and the departure worked out above, 13:30, sits outside that window, so the restriction does not bite on the ZRH to MTY timing, though it is what turns a collection that runs three hours late into a movement tomorrow.
- The paperwork: the invoice value, the description and the classification have to agree with what is in the box before the courier leaves Zurich for Monterrey, and that is checked at the collection address, because a mismatch found at MTY is settled at the speed of a broker rather than the speed of an aeroplane.
