On board courier Germany to Thailand

A consignment collected in Germany, carried in one named courier's documented custody, and handed over in Thailand. This page is about that lane specifically: which European hubs and carriers we route through, what entry looks like for the courier, what customs will ask for on arrival, and which industries actually book it. Cabin carriage is used wherever the operating airline, security rules and the size of the item permit it.

Why Germany to Thailand is a lane rather than a route

The Eastern Economic Corridor south-east of Bangkok is one of the densest concentrations of automotive and electronics manufacturing in Asia, and a great deal of the machinery in it was built in Germany. A line-down call from Rayong at eight in the morning German time is a courier on an afternoon departure and a part on the line the next day, which is the entire commercial case for a hand-carry.

01

Bangkok is also a working gem and jewellery centre, not a decorative one. Loose stones, finished pieces and certification documents move between Bangkok, the German trade and the Gulf constantly, and this is a category where the value is high, the package is small and the customer would rather it never left a named person's hands.

02

And Thailand is the recovery hub for the whole region. When a routing into Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar collapses, there is usually still a way through Bangkok. We route through it more often than the destination list alone would suggest.

How we actually get there

Bangkok is the best-connected point in Southeast Asia from Europe. Lufthansa serves it from Germany, SWISS from Zurich, Austrian from Vienna, and Turkish, Finnair, KLM, Air France and British Airways all reach it from their own hubs. On no other lane in this list do we have as many independent ways to recover a day that has started badly.

HubCarrier we bookWhat it is for on this lane
Frankfurt FRALufthansaGermany's largest long-haul gateway and Lufthansa's main hub. More Asian destinations reachable on one ticket from German soil than from anywhere else.
Munich MUCLufthansaThe second Lufthansa long-haul hub, and the closer one for southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Shorter minimum connections than Frankfurt in practice.
Zurich ZRHSWISSReachable by road from Baden-Württemberg in about the time a domestic feeder would take, which matters when the feeder is the flight that goes wrong.
Vienna VIEAustrian AirlinesA small, fast airport with a long-haul network aimed squarely at Asia. Useful when Frankfurt is weather-bound or the Frankfurt connection is too tight.
Istanbul ISTTurkish AirlinesThe densest single-hub network into South and Southeast Asia available from Europe, and the fallback that most often exists when nothing else does.
Helsinki HELFinnairBuilt as a short-transfer Europe, Asia hub. Block times to the Far East are longer than they once were because of the airspace situation, but the transfer itself is still among the fastest in Europe.
Amsterdam AMSKLMA three-hour drive or a short hop from the Rhine-Ruhr, with a long-haul network weighted towards Asia and a transfer process built for tight connections.
Paris CDGAir FranceThe alternative western European hub, and the one that most often has a seat left when Frankfurt and Munich do not.
London LHRBritish AirwaysWorth using when the destination is better served from London than from the continent, and when the courier holds the right to transit or enter the UK.
Dubai / Doha / Abu Dhabi Emirates, Qatar Airways, EtihadOur home hubs. A Gulf routing turns almost any German city into a one-stop connection to almost anywhere in Asia, and it is where our own desk sits.

Which of these we actually book depends on the day: the departure time that still meets your deadline, the seat that exists at three hours' notice, the cabin baggage rules of the operating carrier, and whether the courier holds what the transit point requires. We name the carrier and the flight numbers when we quote, not before.

Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for Germany to Thailand

A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.

Emirates

The night bank out of Terminal 3

Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For Germany to Thailand that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.

Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus cities
flydubai

The short sectors, several times a day

From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.

Frequency is the fallback
Etihad

Abu Dhabi as the second runway

Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for Germany to Thailand is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.

US preclearance at AUH

The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at Germany to Thailand first, at a fare the quote can carry.

Germany to Thailand: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

Where in Thailand we deliver

The gateway is rarely the destination. Where the consignment has to continue by domestic sector or by road, the courier continues with it and the last leg is quoted as part of the job rather than left to you.

BKK

Bangkok

Suvarnabhumi, the primary long-haul gateway and the point of entry for almost everything urgent.

DMK

Bangkok

Don Mueang, regional and low-cost traffic, occasionally the faster onward connection.

UTP

Rayong / Pattaya

U-Tapao, the gateway to the Eastern Economic Corridor and its automotive plants.

CNX

Chiang Mai

The north, and the electronics and food-processing operations around it.

HKT

Phuket

The Andaman coast, marine and superyacht work.

HDY

Hat Yai

The far south and the land route to Malaysia.

What actually moves between Germany and Thailand

Hand-carry demand clusters where an hour of delay costs more than the flight. These are the categories that generate it on this lane.

Automotive and the Eastern Seaboard

Tooling inserts, prototype parts, homologation samples and line-down components for the Rayong and Chonburi plants.

Electronics and data storage

Test heads, wafer handling parts, pre-production drives and qualification samples for the Ayutthaya and Lamphun operations.

Gems, jewellery and certification

Loose stones, finished pieces, laboratory certificates and the originals that have to travel with them.

Medical devices and diagnostics

Instrument spares, calibration standards, trial material and reference samples for hospitals and contract laboratories.

Aviation and MRO

Rotables, line-maintenance spares and certification paperwork for the maintenance operations around U-Tapao and Suvarnabhumi.

Documents and corporate originals

Board resolutions, powers of attorney, tender originals and legalised contracts.

Entry and customs: the two things that decide who flies and when

Entry for the courier

Thailand has operated a visa exemption for German passport holders on short stays, and the permitted period has been lengthened in recent years. That is one of the reasons this lane works so well operationally: the pool of couriers we can put on a Bangkok departure at a few hours' notice is large, because entry does not depend on a consular appointment. We still verify the current position against the actual passport before booking.

Customs on arrival

01

Thai customs are procedural rather than obstructive, and the procedure rewards preparation. The tariff classification should be agreed before the courier flies, not argued on arrival. Goods entering for repair, testing, exhibition or demonstration belong under a temporary admission regime, an ATA Carnet where the category fits, and moving them as a permanent import instead is an avoidable and sometimes expensive mistake. Duty and VAT treatment should be settled with the consignee in advance so nothing waits on a payment decision.

02

One standing caveat. Entry rules, transit requirements and customs procedure change, sometimes at short notice and sometimes without much warning. Everything above describes how the lane has worked and what we plan for. We verify the current position against the specific passport, the specific goods and the specific consignee before any courier is booked, and we tell you if the answer has changed.

Courier or air cargo?

On board courier vs air cargo

Everything on this desk could travel Germany, UAE as air cargo instead. This is the difference a person in a seat makes.

On board courier

A person in a seat

  • Leaves on the next available flight, often within hours of your call, 24/7.
  • One named courier holds the consignment from collection to signature.
  • Travels in the aircraft cabin wherever the airline, cargo classification and security rules permit it; the transport configuration is confirmed before booking.
  • No warehouse, no consolidation window, no overnight sort.
  • Customs cleared in person, questions answered at the counter, immediately.
  • Same-day delivery is realistic on most sectors out of the UAE.
  • Built for high-value, fragile, temperature-critical goods and originals.
  • Proof of delivery with signature, ID check and a photograph within minutes.
  • A human being you can call at any point of the journey.

Air cargo & express freight

A parcel in a system

  • Waits for the next consolidation and space allocation, not for you.
  • Passes through many hands: hub, build-up, ramp, break-down, delivery agent.
  • Rides in the hold, frequently sitting in a warehouse overnight.
  • Each handover is a queue, and each queue is where hours disappear.
  • Cleared in a batch by a broker; one query can idle the shipment for a day.
  • Next day at best on most lanes, two to three days if it is held.
  • Chain of custody is a scan history, not a person with the box.
  • Signed for by whoever happens to be at the door.
  • Right answer for heavy, bulky or non-urgent freight, and we will say so.

To be straight about it: air cargo is not a bad service, it is a different one. It moves weight cheaply and it does that extremely well. A hand-carry buys back hours, and it is worth paying for exactly when an hour of delay costs more than a seat on a plane, which is the case far more often than most shippers assume, and far less often than most courier companies claim.

How a Thailand assignment actually runs

The whole point of an on board courier is that nothing waits for a batch. Here is what actually happens between your message and the signature on a Thailand assignment, with the timings we work to rather than the ones a brochure would promise.

Minute 0 to 15

You tell us what it is

The first conversation is short and specific: contents, declared value, collection address, delivery address in Thailand, and the real deadline rather than the comfortable one. If there are batteries, powders, liquids, biological material or anything regulated in the box, that is the moment to say so, not at the check-in desk.

Minute 15 to 45

We screen it and price it

Before a price exists we screen the parties, the commodity and the route against sanctions and export-control lists, and we check whether Thailand requires a permit or a licensed consignee for that category. This is also where we occasionally say no, and a provider who never says no has simply moved the risk onto you.

Hour 1 to 3

A named courier is assigned and booked

Assignment is not a raffle. The consignment's value, its regulatory profile and the destination decide who is offered it. For Thailand, visa eligibility usually narrows the list faster than availability does, which is exactly why a global courier network is worth having.

Hour 2 to 4

Collection, sealing and documentation

The courier collects in person, checks the goods against the description, seals the packaging with a numbered tamper-evident seal and photographs it. The commercial invoice, packing list and any permit travel with the courier, and a copy reaches our operations desk and the consignee in Thailand at the same moment.

In flight

The consignment stays in the cabin

The flight is the boring part, and that is the point. No handling agent, no transfer between systems, one person, one box, one documented chain of custody all the way to the arrival airport in Thailand.

On arrival

Customs, then a signature

The courier declares the goods through the red channel at the arrival airport in Thailand, answers questions in person and, where the category or the value warrants it, meets a customs broker we have already briefed. The handover is against signature, printed name and an identification reference, timestamped and with photographs where you have asked for them.

The paperwork that decides how fast Thailand goes

Nothing delays a hand-carry as reliably as a document that says something different from the box. This is what we prepare with you before the courier leaves, and why each piece matters at the arrival airport in Thailand.

Named consignee with authority

Someone in Thailand must be entitled to receive the goods and, where clearance requires it, able to act as importer of record. A delivery address without an authorised person behind it is where otherwise perfect assignments stall.

ATA Carnet and temporary admission

Where goods enter Thailand temporarily and leave again, demonstration equipment, exhibition pieces, professional gear, a carnet avoids duty entirely and gives the courier a document the officer recognises immediately. It has to be issued before departure; there is no retrospective version.

Commercial invoice

The document customs actually reads. It needs a plain description of the goods, the real value, the currency, the terms of sale and the full names and addresses of both parties. “Samples, no commercial value” is not a customs value and it is the fastest way to turn a twenty-minute clearance at the arrival airport in Thailand into an afternoon.

Tariff classification

The HS code decides the duty, the permits and sometimes whether the goods may enter Thailand at all. We would rather agree the classification with you before departure than watch an officer choose one for us, because the officer's choice is the one that stands.

Proforma invoice for non-sales

Repairs, exhibition goods, replacements and samples still need a document with a realistic value on it. The value is what the goods are worth, not what you would like the duty to be, an understated value is a customs offence in Thailand rather than a negotiating position.

Certificates and permits

Certificates of origin, health and phytosanitary certificates, dangerous goods declarations, export licences for dual-use items, import permits for regulated categories. We identify which of these Thailand wants for your specific commodity at the quoting stage, because discovering it at the arrival airport in Thailand is far too late.

What a Thailand courier actually costs, and why

We do not publish a price list, because a fixed table would be a lie: the same box on the same route costs differently at four hours' notice than at two days'. What we can do is be exact about which levers move the number, so nothing in the quote is a surprise.

Weekends, nights and public holidays

We operate around the clock, and a consignment collected at 02:00 on a Friday is a normal assignment rather than a special case. It is priced the same way as any other; what changes is which flights exist, not what we charge for our part.

Distance and sector count

A direct flight to Thailand is one ticket and one risk. A two-sector routing is cheaper on paper and more expensive in practice, because every connection is a chance to lose the consignment's schedule. We quote the routing we would actually fly, not the cheapest one that technically arrives.

Size, weight and whether it fits a locker

Anything beyond normal cabin baggage means a second seat, and occasionally two. An extra seat sounds dramatic until you compare it with a charter: it is an order of magnitude cheaper and it moves at the speed of a scheduled flight.

Regulatory profile of the goods

Batteries, biological material, temperature-controlled consignments and anything export-controlled require preparation, sometimes a permit and occasionally a specialist packer. That work is real and it appears in the quote rather than as a surprise at the airport.

Whether the courier returns immediately

A same-day turnaround, an overnight with a hotel, or a courier who continues to a third country all cost differently. On a Thailand routing the flight schedule usually decides this rather than anybody's preference.

How much notice you give us

A seat bought four hours before departure costs what a seat bought four hours before departure costs. Nothing about that is a courier margin, it is simply the airline's pricing curve, and it is the single largest variable in a Thailand quote.

Every quote we send is fixed before departure and contains the flight, the courier's fee, transfers and, where an overnight cannot be avoided, the hotel. The things that can change it afterwards are the things you control: a change of destination, a change of goods, or a delay at your end that costs the booked flight. Duty and tax in Thailand sit with the consignee unless we have agreed otherwise in writing.

What can go wrong on a Thailand assignment, and what we do about it

Every operator has these problems. The difference is whether the answer was decided in advance or invented at the counter. This is our answer to each of them, written down before you need it.

Customs asks a question

A person can answer it. That single fact is most of the difference between a hand-carry and a cargo booking: a query at the arrival airport in Thailand that would idle a shipment for a day gets resolved at the counter in minutes because the person who knows what is in the box is standing there.

The goods turn out to be regulated

Found before departure, this is a repack or a permit. Found at security, it is a lost flight and sometimes a confiscation. It is the reason we ask uncomfortable questions about contents at the very beginning instead of taking a booking politely.

The consignment is larger than described

Measured at collection, not at the gate. If it will not fit a locker we buy a seat for it there and then and tell you the revised number before the courier moves, rather than improvising at check-in.

The connection is missed

This is why we build routings above the minimum connection time rather than at it. Where a connection is genuinely tight, the courier holds the consignment airside and takes the next available service rather than clearing into a country they were only passing through.

The consignee is unreachable

We confirm the receiving party and a working phone number before the courier departs, and we agree a fallback in Thailand, a second authorised person, or a secure hold, so that a delivery does not fail because someone went into a meeting.

Weather or airspace closes the route

Force majeure does not disappear because a shipment is urgent. What we do is re-plan around it, a different hub, a different carrier, occasionally a different UAE airport, and tell you what the new arrival time is rather than letting you discover it.

Questions about the Germany, Thailand lane

01Why is Germany to Thailand such a strong on board courier lane?

Three things line up: dense European connectivity into Bangkok on several independent carriers, straightforward short-stay entry for German passport holders, and an industrial base in the Eastern Economic Corridor that runs German machinery to a fixed schedule. Those together mean we can usually find both a courier and a seat quickly.

02Can you reach Rayong and the Eastern Seaboard the same day?

Bangkok to the Eastern Economic Corridor is a road leg, and we plan the vehicle at the same time as the flight. Whether it is the same day depends on the arrival time and on how long customs takes, so we quote the road leg as part of the door-to-door time rather than as an afterthought.

03Do you move gems and jewellery to Bangkok?

Yes, subject to screening, declared value, insurance and a proper customs declaration on arrival. High-value consignments travel in one named courier's custody under a numbered seal and are declared rather than hoped through.

04What happens if the Bangkok flight is cancelled?

This is the lane where that is least likely to cost you the day, because several European hubs reach Bangkok independently of one another. We rebook on the next viable routing and tell you what changed rather than letting you find out from a tracking page.

05Is an ATA Carnet worth it for Thailand?

For equipment going in for a demonstration, an exhibition, testing or repair and coming back out again, usually yes. For goods that are being sold and staying, no. We will tell you which case you are in before the courier leaves.

06Can a courier continue from Bangkok into Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos?

Frequently, and it is often the fastest way to reach those markets when the direct routing has fallen over. The onward entry rights are checked before the first sector is booked.
