Spain does two things on this lane that are worth separating. The first is its own industry: aerospace assembly and components around Madrid, Seville and the Basque Country, automotive plants in Valencia, Barcelona and Zaragoza, and machine tools in the north. All of them run to schedules set elsewhere, and all of them generate the small, urgent, high-consequence consignments that a hand carry exists for.
The second is geographic and it is the reason many American shippers use Madrid without the goods being for Spain at all. Madrid is the strongest European connection into Latin America, and for a consignment bound for Bogotá, Lima, Santiago or São Paulo the routing through Madrid is frequently faster and always simpler than a US departure that connects through the region.
The third strand is documentary. Spanish corporate, property and civil formality still requires originals more often than American practice does, and the legalisation and apostille chain is a real constraint on timing. On this lane the flight is very rarely the thing that decides the delivery date.
