Portugal has two industries that generate steady transatlantic hand carry demand and one geographic advantage. The industries are moulds and tooling, the Marinha Grande cluster supplies automotive and consumer manufacturers globally, and a mould insert or a first article can hold up a production launch, and technology, where American companies run engineering centres in Lisbon and Porto.
The geographic advantage is that Lisbon is the closest continental European mainland point to the United States and a long-standing bridge to Brazil and lusophone Africa. For a consignment ultimately bound for São Paulo or Luanda, a Lisbon routing is sometimes shorter and simpler than the obvious one, and one courier can carry through.
The third strand is documentary and personal: a very large Portuguese-American community generates a constant flow of civil, property and probate originals that have to be physically present and correctly apostilled, on timetables set by notaries and courts.
