Germany is the destination where the phrase "the line has stopped" is most often the reason for the call. German-engineered production equipment is installed across the United States, and American plants are full of it; equally, German plants run American automation and American semiconductors. When one of them stops, the missing item is almost always a controller, a sensor, a servo motor or a board, and it is almost always small enough for a courier to carry.
The second driver is development rather than production. Pre-series parts, tooling inserts, first articles, test boards and approved colour and material standards move between American engineering offices and German ones constantly, and every one of them is holding up a sign-off with a date attached. These are frequently confidential and occasionally not yet homologated, which pushes the job towards a single named custodian rather than simply towards a faster network.
The third is life sciences. The German pharmaceutical and diagnostics industry runs deep clinical relationships with American sponsors and laboratories, and the resulting traffic, investigational product, trial samples, reference standards, carries a stability window rather than a delivery date. That changes what the routing is optimised for: fewest handovers, not fewest hours.
