Hong Kong does two jobs on this lane and both are worth the page. The first is as a market in its own right: the financial, legal and trading community generates original instruments, executed agreements and trade documents on hard deadlines, and the physical original is frequently what has effect.
The second is as the fastest door into southern China. Formalities in Hong Kong are quick and predictable, it is a free port for most goods, and the land crossing into Shenzhen is a known quantity. For a consignment bound for a factory in Dongguan or an engineering team in Shenzhen, arriving in Hong Kong and crossing is frequently faster than a mainland flight and always simpler to plan, provided the crossing is set up in advance rather than attempted on the day.
The third strand is the electronics supply chain itself. A very large share of the world's pre-production and NPI hardware passes through this corner of the world, and the deadlines attached to it are build dates rather than delivery dates.
