Fly to Kenya as an on board courier

Safari, the Rift Valley, the coast at Mombasa, and Nairobi as East Africa's hub. The flight is paid, the assignment pays a fee, and you decide when you are available. This is what the work on this route actually looks like, including the parts other recruiters leave out.

Best time to visit privately: June to October for the migration; January to February is dry

What an assignment to Kenya involves

Medical and diagnostic samples, horticulture laboratory material and development-sector documents, often with a stability window that makes them genuinely urgent.

Nairobi is our gateway for onward hand-carry across East Africa, so assignments here sometimes continue rather than return.

The flight is paid

Booked and paid by us in your own name, matching your passport exactly. Transfers and a hotel where an overnight is required.

A fee per assignment

Stated in the offer before you accept. No bidding, no haggling, paid by bank transfer after the assignment closes.

You choose the dates

You enter the days you can fly. We offer what fits. You accept or decline, there is no obligation and no penalty for saying no.

Training first

Customs, documentation, conduct and security in our Academy, released once your documents are verified.

What you carry

Sealed and documented, with cabin carriage where permitted and continuous responsibility in your custody.

The honest part

Deadlines are real. Some assignments turn around the same day and you see the airport, not the city. Extensions are your own time and your own cost.

Where else couriers fly

Assignments follow industry, not tourism, but a lot of industry happens in places people want to see.

Why a person, and not a cargo booking?

Understanding this is half the job, clients pay for the column on the left.

On board courier vs air cargo

The consignment you would carry to Kenya could also fly as air cargo in the hold of the very same aircraft. This is what changes when a vetted person carries it in the cabin instead, and it is why the job exists at all.

On board courier

A person in a seat

  • Leaves on the next available flight, often within hours of your call, 24/7.
  • One named courier holds the consignment from collection to signature.
  • Travels in the aircraft cabin wherever the airline, cargo classification and security rules permit it; the transport configuration is confirmed before booking.
  • No warehouse, no consolidation window, no overnight sort.
  • Customs cleared in person, questions answered at the counter, immediately.
  • Same-day delivery is realistic on most sectors out of the UAE.
  • Built for high-value, fragile, temperature-critical goods and originals.
  • Proof of delivery with signature, ID check and a photograph within minutes.
  • A human being you can call at any point of the journey.

Air cargo & express freight

A parcel in a system

  • Waits for the next consolidation and space allocation, not for you.
  • Passes through many hands: hub, build-up, ramp, break-down, delivery agent.
  • Rides in the hold, frequently sitting in a warehouse overnight.
  • Each handover is a queue, and each queue is where hours disappear.
  • Cleared in a batch by a broker; one query can idle the shipment for a day.
  • Next day at best on most lanes, two to three days if it is held.
  • Chain of custody is a scan history, not a person with the box.
  • Signed for by whoever happens to be at the door.
  • Right answer for heavy, bulky or non-urgent freight, and we will say so.

To be straight about it: air cargo is not a bad service, it is a different one. It moves weight cheaply and it does that extremely well. A hand-carry buys back hours, and it is worth paying for exactly when an hour of delay costs more than a seat on a plane, which is the case far more often than most shippers assume, and far less often than most courier companies claim.

Questions from people who want to fly

The ones worth answering honestly before you apply.

01Is a courier assignment to Kenya a free holiday?

No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. It is paid work with a deadline: you collect a consignment, you fly with it, you declare it at customs and you hand it over against signature. The flight is paid because the flight is the job. Where the schedule and our operations allow, you can extend the stay privately at your own cost, but that is a bonus, never the plan.

02What does it pay?

A fee per completed assignment, stated in the offer before you accept it. It varies with the length of the sector, the urgency and the responsibility the consignment carries. The ticket, airport transfers and a hotel where an overnight is needed are paid by us on top of the fee.

03How often do assignments to Kenya come up?

It depends on the season and the industry behind the route. We publish assignments in the courier portal as they arise and notify couriers whose stated availability and documents fit, so the honest answer is: register, keep your availability current, and you will see them the moment they are posted.

04What do I need to qualify?

A passport valid for at least six months, a clean criminal record, a bank account and a credit card in your own name, the ability to travel at short notice, working English and a minimum age of 21. No logistics experience is required, training happens in our Academy once your documents are verified.

What the work to Kenya actually is

It is worth being precise about what an on board courier is, because the phrase gets used for three different products. It is not a faster parcel service, it is not a premium express label, and it is not a charter. It is a person who buys a seat on a scheduled flight and carries your consignment in the cabin, in their own custody, from the moment they collect it to the moment somebody signs for it.

01

What clients are actually buying is the removal of every handover. In a normal air freight movement a consignment changes hands seven or eight times: shipper, forwarder, handling agent, ramp, aircraft, ramp, break-bulk, broker, delivery agent. Each handover is a queue and each queue is where hours disappear. A courier reduces that number to one, collection, and one more, delivery.

02

It is also worth saying what the service does not fix. It does not make a permit appear, it does not make a sanctioned party acceptable, and it does not make an undeclared battery legal. Where those are the problem, a courier only makes the problem arrive faster, which is why the screening happens before the quote.

03

What that adds up to for Kenya is a service you should use when the deadline is real and ignore when it is not. We would rather tell you to send it as express freight and keep the relationship than sell you a courier for a box that could have travelled overnight anyway.

What an assignment to Kenya looks like, step by step

From the first message to the delivery signature, a Kenya assignment passes through six stages. None of them are automated away, and none of them involve your consignment sitting in a warehouse overnight.

Minute 0 to 15

You tell us what it is

The first conversation is short and specific: contents, declared value, collection address, delivery address in Kenya, and the real deadline rather than the comfortable one. If there are batteries, powders, liquids, biological material or anything regulated in the box, that is the moment to say so, not at the check-in desk.

Minute 15 to 45

We screen it and price it

We check three things at once: whether we may lawfully carry it, whether Kenya will let it in without a permit we do not have, and whether it physically fits an aircraft cabin. Only then do you get a fixed price, and the price includes the ticket, the courier fee, transfers and a hotel where an overnight is unavoidable.

Hour 1 to 3

A named courier is assigned and booked

The matching runs against couriers who are available now, whose passport and visas suit the route to Kenya, and whose delivery history fits the value of the consignment. The ticket is then bought in the courier's own name, matching their passport exactly, a booking in anything but the traveller's legal name is refused at the gate.

Hour 2 to 4

Collection, sealing and documentation

At collection the seal number is recorded, the goods are photographed and the paperwork is checked line by line against what is in the box. A description that does not match the contents is a common reason a hand-carry is held at the arrival airport in Kenya, and it is entirely preventable.

In flight

The consignment stays in the cabin

The flight is the boring part, and that is the point. No handling agent, no transfer between systems, one person, one box, one documented chain of custody all the way to the arrival airport in Kenya.

On arrival

Customs, then a signature

The courier declares the goods through the red channel at the arrival airport in Kenya, answers questions in person and, where the category or the value warrants it, meets a customs broker we have already briefed. The handover is against signature, printed name and an identification reference, timestamped and with photographs where you have asked for them.

Who books a courier to Kenya

Hand-carry demand is not evenly spread, it clusters in industries where an hour of delay costs more than the flight. These are the ones that book Kenya most often, and what they send.

Jewellery, watches and precious goods

Loose stones, finished pieces, movements and bullion documentation, carried in the cabin under one named person's custody and declared properly on arrival in Kenya rather than hopefully.

Life sciences and diagnostics

Clinical trial samples, diagnostic material, reference standards and biologics, most of them with a stability window measured in hours rather than days and a data logger recording every minute of the journey to Kenya.

Aviation and AOG

A grounded aircraft costs more per hour than the entire logistics budget for the month. Rotables, avionics, seals and the certification paperwork that must travel with them are the most time-sensitive freight that exists, and industries like these in Kenya generate them continuously.

Automotive and mobility

Prototypes under confidentiality, homologation samples, tooling inserts and line-critical components moving to build schedules that were fixed months ago.

Media, events and production

Rushes, masters, broadcast hardware and event material with a transmission or a stage time attached, deadlines that do not move because logistics had a difficult day.

Energy, marine and mining

Downhole and subsea electronics, marine spares for a vessel with a sailing window, assay samples with a chain-of-custody requirement, and project equipment on a contractual schedule.

What can go wrong on a Kenya assignment, and what we do about it

Every operator has these problems. The difference is whether the answer was decided in advance or invented at the counter. This is our answer to each of them, written down before you need it.

Customs asks a question

A person can answer it. That single fact is most of the difference between a hand-carry and a cargo booking: a query at the arrival airport in Kenya that would idle a shipment for a day gets resolved at the counter in minutes because the person who knows what is in the box is standing there.

The goods turn out to be regulated

Found before departure, this is a repack or a permit. Found at security, it is a lost flight and sometimes a confiscation. It is the reason we ask uncomfortable questions about contents at the very beginning instead of taking a booking politely.

The consignment is larger than described

Measured at collection, not at the gate. If it will not fit a locker we buy a seat for it there and then and tell you the revised number before the courier moves, rather than improvising at check-in.

The connection is missed

This is why we build routings above the minimum connection time rather than at it. Where a connection is genuinely tight, the courier holds the consignment airside and takes the next available service rather than clearing into a country they were only passing through.

The consignee is unreachable

We confirm the receiving party and a working phone number before the courier departs, and we agree a fallback in Kenya, a second authorised person, or a secure hold, so that a delivery does not fail because someone went into a meeting.

Weather or airspace closes the route

Force majeure does not disappear because a shipment is urgent. What we do is re-plan around it, a different hub, a different carrier, occasionally a different UAE airport, and tell you what the new arrival time is rather than letting you discover it.

More questions about courier assignments to Kenya

The questions clients actually ask before their first assignment, answered without marketing language.

01Does the consignment ever go into the hold?

No. That is the definition of the service rather than a policy we could relax. It travels in the cabin, in the courier's custody, for every sector of the journey to Kenya. If something genuinely cannot travel in a cabin, we will tell you that and discuss freight or a charter instead of pretending.

02What cannot travel with a courier?

Undeclared dangerous goods, controlled substances, weapons and weapon parts, counterfeits, unlicensed dual-use items, live animals, and anything whose parties or end use fail sanctions screening. Some regulated categories can travel with the right permit and packing; we tell you which case yours is before you pay.

03Can a courier carry more than one consignment?

Only where both belong to the same client and the customs position is clean. Mixing two clients' goods under one declaration into Kenya creates a liability neither of them agreed to, so we do not do it.

04Is the consignment insured?

All-risk cover on the declared value is arranged on request and confirmed in writing before collection. We do not rely on airline liability, because under the Montreal Convention that liability is a small fraction of what most courier consignments are worth.

05Are you an airline?

No. OnBoard Courier is a courier placement and brokerage business based in Dubai. We vet, train and insure couriers, screen consignments and buy ordinary passenger seats on scheduled flights. We operate no aircraft, hold no alliance membership and have no exclusive carrier contract, which is exactly what lets us put a courier on whichever airline departs next for Kenya.

06What happens if the flight is cancelled?

We rebook. Before departure we already know the next alternatives to Kenya across the carriers we can lawfully use, so a cancellation costs hours rather than a day. You are told the new arrival time as soon as we have it, not after you ask.

07Do you handle customs at the arrival airport in Kenya?

The courier declares the goods in person through the red channel, and where the value or the category warrants it we brief a licensed customs broker in Kenya in advance. Duty and tax are the consignee's cost unless agreed otherwise in writing.

08How quickly can a courier leave for Kenya?

A vetted courier can normally be at a UAE airport within two to four hours of a confirmed booking. The real constraint is not our side, it is the next departure with a seat and a cabin allowance that fits. Because we use all seven UAE airports and buy on the open market rather than through one carrier, that next departure is usually sooner than people expect.
