Behind Nissan sits a Japanese supplier base that has followed it into central Mexico: press and stamping specialists, seat and interior makers, transmission and driveline plants, and the machine tool and automation companies that keep all of them running. When a die needs a corrected insert, when a robot controller fails outside the spares pool, or when a design change has to be proved on a physical sample before a production release, the fastest path is still a person leaving Narita in the morning.

NRTAGU
Tokyo · Aguascalientes · 24/7On board courier from Tokyo to Aguascalientes
Aguascalientes is now the centre of Nissan's Mexican manufacturing, and a large part of what it consumes is still engineered and tooled in Japan. This lane puts a single die insert, control unit or engineering sample in a person's hands in Tokyo and gets it to a plant in the Bajío, through a nonstop Pacific crossing and one domestic leg.
Why the Bajío still calls Japan
Nissan has built in Aguascalientes since 1992, and the company has spent the last two years concentrating its Mexican production there. Vehicle assembly that used to run at the CIVAC plant in Morelos moved north into the Aguascalientes complex, the refreshed Versa went into production at the A1 plant, and the NP300 followed. Aguascalientes also builds the engines behind several of those models. The result is a single, very large site whose downtime cost is concentrated rather than spread across the country.
OnBoard Courier is licensed in Dubai and works as a placement business. We take the enquiry, price it, agree the routing and the customs treatment, and place the assignment with an operating partner who books the seats and provides the courier. We do not operate aircraft and we make no claim to an office in Tokyo or Aguascalientes. What we do own is the plan, and the plan is checkable line by line.

The departure boards behind NRT to AGU
A hand-carry on this lane is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once, books the one that lands first and holds the one that leaves next.
The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at from Tokyo to Aguascalientes first, at a fare the quote can carry.
from Tokyo to Aguascalientes: every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.
Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.
The Pacific crossing
Tokyo Narita to Mexico City is flown nonstop by both Aeroméxico and ANA, around fourteen departures a week between them on Boeing 787 equipment, covering about 11,248 km in roughly thirteen hours. The arrival is at Benito Juárez rather than at the newer Felipe Ángeles airport, which is convenient because the domestic network to Aguascalientes runs from Benito Juárez. There is no nonstop between Haneda and Mexico City, so a Haneda based collection means an airport transfer in Tokyo, and that transfer is built into the timeline rather than glossed over.
The departure times sit in the late morning and early afternoon Tokyo time, which shapes the whole assignment. A consignment released in Tokyo in the early morning makes the same day departure. A consignment released in the evening does not, and the honest answer is the following day rather than a routing that technically exists but arrives later than the nonstop would have.
Why the routing avoids the United States
There are faster looking itineraries through Los Angeles, Dallas or Houston, and on paper some of them save an hour. They are usually the wrong choice. The United States does not offer visa free transit: a courier changing planes at an American airport has to be admitted to the country, clear immigration and customs with the item, collect and recheck baggage, and hold the correct American visa or travel authorisation in advance. That is three extra failure points on a time critical assignment.
The nonstop removes all of them. A Japanese passport holder needs no visa to enter Mexico as a visitor, so on the Narita to Mexico City routing the courier deals with exactly one immigration authority and one customs authority. Where the assigned courier holds a different nationality, the entry requirements are checked against that passport before the seat is bought, because Mexico also waives the visa requirement for holders of valid United States, Canadian, United Kingdom, Japanese or Schengen visas, and that changes who can be assigned.
Mexico City to Aguascalientes
The domestic leg is well served, at around seventeen flights a week from Benito Juárez to Aguascalientes, roughly two a day, and the sector is short. The practical question is whether the courier makes a same day connection after a thirteen hour crossing and a customs clearance, or whether the plan should assume a night in Mexico City and a first flight the following morning. We answer that against the actual arrival time and the actual customs position rather than assuming the best case.
The road alternative is real but long: about 494 km, most of a working day behind the wheel. It earns its place when the flights are disrupted, when the item is too large for a regional aircraft cabin, or when the delivery point is somewhere between the two rather than in Aguascalientes itself. When a road leg is used, it is quoted as a road leg with a driver and a realistic time, not folded into a flight number.
Where the clearance actually happens
This is the detail that decides the day. The courier and the item enter Mexico at Mexico City, so the Mexican customs entry happens at Benito Juárez, not at Aguascalientes. From there the consignment travels as domestic baggage. That means the consignee's customs broker has to be at Mexico City with the paperwork ready, and it means an examination there, rather than a delay at the far end, is the risk that has to be managed.
The mechanics are the same as anywhere else in Mexico. A passenger arriving by air has an allowance of 500 US dollars, and a commercial item is above it and gets declared. Commercial goods enter on a pedimento filed by a licensed customs broker for the consignee. Where the receiving plant holds an IMMEX registration, which most automotive plants in the Bajío do, the item is normally brought in as a temporary import against that programme, with a defined period in which it must be re-exported or regularised.
What a Japanese exporter should put on the invoice
Mexican customs work from the document, and a Japanese domestic invoice format is not always what the broker needs. The description has to say what the thing is in plain terms rather than by internal part nomenclature, the value has to be a real commercial value even when the item is being sent free of charge, the quantity and net weight have to match the box, and the consignee's Mexican tax identification has to be on it.
Japan and Mexico have had an economic partnership agreement in force since 2005, and goods that qualify can enter at a preferential rate, but only where the exporter issues the origin documentation the agreement requires. That is the exporter's statement about their own goods and nobody else can write it. Where it is missing the item still clears, it simply costs your consignee more, and it is better to know that in Tokyo than to be told it in Mexico City.
The return leg is part of the job
Trans Pacific hand carries are rarely one way in practice. The failed unit comes back for analysis, the trial tool returns, or the courier is asked to bring documentation or a sample in the other direction. Planning the return with the outbound is not tidiness, it is cost control: positioning a second courier from Tokyo a week later costs far more than extending the first assignment by a day.
The return also has a physical constraint worth understanding. Mexico City sits at roughly 2,230 metres, which limits how much weight an aircraft can lift out of it, so long trans Pacific departures from Mexico City are payload sensitive and some Asian services build a northern refuelling stop into the return. That does not stop a courier travelling, but it can change the routing and the time, and it is checked before a return date is promised. Courier duty time and rest are planned into the same schedule, because a person who has been awake for twenty six hours is not a control the client should be relying on.
Services that carry this lane
What flies, and what it means for a courier who has to be at the gate.
- Aeroméxico flies Narita to Mexico City nonstop on Boeing 787 equipment and also operates the domestic leg to Aguascalientes, which keeps the whole journey with one carrier and one baggage system.
- ANA flies Narita to Mexico City nonstop on the 787 as well, giving a second daily option and a different departure time out of Tokyo.
- There is no nonstop between Haneda and Mexico City, so a Haneda collection means either a transfer to Narita or a connection elsewhere.
- Japan Airlines and the American carriers offer connections over United States hubs, which are only worth considering when the courier already holds the required United States documentation.
- Aeroméxico and the Mexican low cost carriers provide the Mexico City to Aguascalientes leg, and the last departure of the day on that sector is what decides whether a same day delivery is real.
Questions about Tokyo to Aguascalientes
01Can the courier depart from Haneda instead of Narita?
They can depart from Haneda, but there is no Haneda to Mexico City nonstop, so it means either an airport transfer in Tokyo or a connection somewhere else. In most cases collecting in the Tokyo area and departing Narita is faster overall. We compare both against the actual release time of the consignment.
02Why not connect through Los Angeles or Dallas?
Because the United States has no visa free transit. A courier changing planes there is admitted to the country, clears immigration and customs with the item, and must hold the right American visa or travel authorisation beforehand. The Narita to Mexico City nonstop involves one immigration authority and one customs authority, which is fewer things that can go wrong on a deadline.
03How long does the whole assignment take door to door?
The Pacific crossing is about thirteen hours, the customs clearance at Mexico City depends on the broker and on whether the item is examined, and the leg to Aguascalientes is either a short flight or a 494 km drive. We quote a realistic total against the actual departure and arrival times of the day in question, including whether a same day onward connection is genuinely achievable.
04Where does the item clear Mexican customs?
At Mexico City, because that is where the courier enters the country. It then travels to Aguascalientes as domestic baggage. Your customs broker therefore needs to be at Benito Juárez with the entry prepared, and we give them the flight details, the invoice and the classification before the courier leaves Tokyo.
05Our plant brings tooling in temporarily. Does that work with a hand carry?
Yes, and it is the normal case in the Bajío. Plants under an IMMEX programme bring equipment and components in as temporary imports against that registration, with an obligation to re-export or regularise within the permitted period. The entry has to be filed as a temporary import on the way in, so we need the programme details and the broker before departure.
06Can the same courier bring something back to Japan?
Usually yes, and it is normally the cheaper way to run the assignment. The Mexican export side is arranged with the same broker, particularly where the goods came in temporarily. Bear in mind that Mexico City's altitude makes long Pacific departures payload sensitive and some services take a refuelling stop northbound, so the return date is confirmed against real schedules rather than assumed to mirror the outbound.
What the desk works out before it quotes Tokyo to Aguascalientes
Computed for NRT to AGU on 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics and from the airport files retrieved 2026-09-07. The distance is great circle between NRT and AGU, the flying time is the model the calculator on this page runs, and the hours are local at each end. Frequencies move with the season, so a Tokyo to Aguascalientes quote is priced on the flights running the day you ask rather than on this page.
How a Tokyo to Aguascalientes movement actually runs
A Tokyo to Aguascalientes movement runs in two legs. The schedule the desk holds carries no nonstop between Tokyo NRT and Aguascalientes AGU, so the lane is built through a change of aircraft, and six of the airports in the network join the two ends. The quickest of the ones dependable enough to plan on is Mexico City MEX, where the weaker of the two legs still runs about twice a day. NRT to MEX and MEX to AGU covers 11,676 km against the 10,835 km direct track and takes about 16h 25m once 75 minutes are allowed to change aircraft at an airport that size. The first leg is held by Aeromexico and ANA and the second by Aeromexico, and where those are not the same airline the two tickets are checked for a single booking reference before the courier leaves, because a self transfer puts the bag back through check in. Puerto Vallarta PVR sits about 325 km from Aguascalientes, which does hold a nonstop to NRT 6 times a week, so on this lane the desk prices the road leg to PVR against the connection before it books either. 3 of the airports that join NRT and AGU clear that dependability line, so the routing has somewhere to go when the first one is full.
Behind MEX the next usable interchange is Houston IAH at about 16h 34m gate to gate, so the booking has two hubs to try before the movement has to wait for tomorrow. What the change of aircraft at Mexico City actually takes, airside or landside, the walk, the re-screening and the local night restrictions, is on the Mexico City transit page and is not repeated on the Tokyo to Aguascalientes lane. One leg of the routing has a reference page of its own, Tokyo NRT to Mexico City MEX.
The clock on a Tokyo to Aguascalientes movement
| Stage | Tokyo local | Aguascalientes local |
|---|---|---|
| Collection closes | 09:00 | 18:00 |
| At the airport | 10:30 | 19:30 |
| Wheels up | 13:30 | 22:30 |
| On the ground | 05:55 | 14:55 |
| Through arrivals | 07:25 | 16:25 |
| Handed over | 08:10 | 17:10 |
The same ground allowances the calculator on this page starts from, ninety minutes to collect and reach NRT, three hours at the airport before departure, 16h 25m in the air over Mexico City, ninety minutes of arrival formalities at AGU and a forty five minute delivery run. Both columns are local, read for a mid January date, because Tokyo and Aguascalientes do not change their clocks on the same day. Move any of the allowances in the calculator lower down this page and the whole Tokyo to Aguascalientes clock moves with them.
Aguascalientes runs 15 hours behind Tokyo in January, which is why the two columns above do not sit 16h 25m apart. Read backwards, a six in the evening handover in Aguascalientes would need the collection in Tokyo closed the day before, which is the shape of NRT to AGU: the aircraft is boarded on one calendar day and the item is handed over in Aguascalientes on the next, and a quote that pretends otherwise is a quote that will be missed. Forwards, a nine in the morning collection in Tokyo puts the courier at the door in Aguascalientes at about 17:10 local the same day, inside working hours at the receiving end, which is the version of this lane worth paying for.
What gets a courier onto the Tokyo to Aguascalientes lane
Neither NRT nor AGU carries one of the public industrial sites the site holds, but the two countries do: two automotive sites across Japan and Mexico, among them Toyota at Toyota City, Aichi and Volkswagen at Puebla. That is the demand NRT to AGU sits inside, one country away from the airport rather than at it, which usually means a road leg at one end and a longer conversation about the delivery address than about the flight. What the measured network does say about the item is that 10,835 km is a long haul sector, so the consignment stays with one person for 16h 25m of flying and is presented at AGU by that person. Anything inside cabin limits leaves NRT in the cabin and stays there for the whole of it; above that it travels as accompanied checked baggage on the same ticket and is lifted off the belt at AGU by the same courier.
Where a Tokyo to Aguascalientes consignment is entered, and at what hour
A consignment that leaves Tokyo on this lane is entered at Aguascalientes AGU. The held schedule reaches Mexico at 51 airports in all, Mexico City MEX, Cancún CUN, Guadalajara GDL and Monterrey MTY among them, so where the consignee is not in Aguascalientes the desk compares the arrival airport before it buys the NRT ticket rather than driving the difference afterwards. The routing matters on NRT to AGU more than usual, because the change of aircraft is at Mexico City MEX, inside Mexico, the courier is entered at MEX and not at AGU, and the second leg is then a domestic flight with the item as a passenger bag. Whoever clears it has to be standing at MEX, which is a decision taken before the ticket is bought and not after the aircraft has landed. The hour matters as much as the paperwork, and on the clock above the courier is through arrivals at Aguascalientes AGU at 16:25 local, inside the working day, which is when a broker and a consignee in Aguascalientes are reachable. What the entry itself needs, the declaration, the broker and the documents, is set out for Mexico on the country desk and is not repeated on every lane that lands at AGU, and the desk checks that position against the actual consignment before it quotes NRT to AGU.
The other ways into Mexico on NRT to AGU
A consignee on this lane is not always in Aguascalientes, so these are the other airports in Mexico that NRT reaches without a change of aircraft on the held schedule, with the great circle distance from AGU beside each one. The closest of them is Puerto Vallarta PVR at 325 km from AGU, running 6 times a week out of NRT, which on a delivery outside the city is often the shorter total journey even though it looks like the wrong airport.
| Airport | City | Flights a day from NRT | km from AGU | In the calculator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Puerto Vallarta PVR | Puerto Vallarta | 0.9 | 325 | open it |
| Mexico City MEX | Mexico City | 2.3 | 422 | open it |
Straight line distance from AGU, not a road distance, and the desk works the road leg out properly against the actual delivery address before it quotes NRT into an airport that is not AGU.
What Tokyo to Aguascalientes costs in courier time
This desk is in Dubai and neither end of NRT to AGU is, so where a courier has to be positioned onto NRT rather than found there, the held schedule puts DXB to NRT at about once a day over 7,979 km, and that positioning leg is priced into the quote rather than discovered after it. Three of the five UAE gateways reach NRT without a change, which is why the NRT to AGU collection that has to start tomorrow morning in Tokyo is still worth asking about tonight. At 23h 10m from collection to signature the job is past the sixteen hour duty period a single courier is planned against, so NRT to AGU is quoted with a rest built in or with the courier changed at the interchange, and never as one unbroken shift. By length this is the 43rd longest of the 346 lanes the site publishes, at 10,835 km.
What decides whether Tokyo to Aguascalientes goes today
- The interchange: there is no NRT to AGU nonstop, so the movement needs two legs that connect on the same day, and through Mexico City MEX the weaker of them runs about twice a day, which is the figure that decides whether the pair of flights exists this afternoon.
- The calendar: the door to door figure is 23h 10m, which on this lane puts the handover in Aguascalientes on the day after the collection in Tokyo, so the decision to make today is which morning it has to reach AGU, not which hour.
- The night at Tokyo: scheduled movements are restricted between 23:00 and 06:00 local, and the departure worked out above, 13:30, sits outside that window, so the restriction does not bite on the NRT to AGU timing, though it is what turns a collection that runs three hours late into a movement tomorrow.
- The paperwork: the invoice value, the description and the classification have to agree with what is in the box before the courier leaves Tokyo for Aguascalientes, and that is checked at the collection address, because a mismatch found at AGU is settled at the speed of a broker rather than the speed of an aeroplane.
