Italy · sixteen origin airports, three of them at Milan

Three airports at Milan, sixteen across Italy, and one useful habit

Very few countries give a courier three separate runways at the same city. Italy does, and it changes what a desk in Dubai can build when it needs something moved this evening.

Freelance. Assignments are offered, never assigned.

Why a human still beats a network

There is a class of shipment that no express service will touch on the terms the client needs. A signed instrument. A sample with a temperature window measured in hours. A component that a stopped line is waiting for. A piece whose insurer will not permit it out of human custody.

01

The answer is old and it works: put it in the cabin with a passenger who is legally responsible for it, and have a named recipient sign for it on arrival. That passenger is an on board courier.

02

The desk that needs the movement buys the seat. It is in Dubai, the booking is made in your name against your own passport, and no part of the arrangement involves you paying and being reimbursed.

Firm quote in 15 minutes

Tell us what has to fly. We answer with a flight and a price.

Five short questions. A dispatcher replies with a named departure, the delivery hour and one fixed price, day and night.

  • One named courier from collection to signature
  • Customs cleared in person on arrival
  • Licensed UAE company, proper VAT invoices

Rome, Milan, and what the return date is allowed to do

Malpensa to Dubai is 6h 03m, Fiumicino 5h 37m, Bergamo 5h 58m. All three run without a change and all three go often. The outbound is dictated by the deadline. The return is not always.

01

When the assignment does not need you turned around and the schedule has room, the desk can issue your return leg up to a week after the outbound. That is a normal booking decision rather than a perk, and it is worth understanding exactly, because the inflated version of this story is the oldest recruitment scam in the trade.

02

Where it does happen, the days in between are entirely yours. Unpaid, unmanaged, at your own cost, with the flight home already issued and sitting in the reservation.

03

And where it does not happen, you know that too, because the written offer carries the outbound date and the return date before you accept it. There are assignments that finish where they start on the same day, and there is no shame in either kind.

Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for your consignment

A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.

Emirates

The night bank out of Terminal 3

Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For your consignment that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.

Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus cities
flydubai

The short sectors, several times a day

From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.

Frequency is the fallback
Etihad

Abu Dhabi as the second runway

Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for your consignment is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.

US preclearance at AUH

The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at your consignment first, at a fare the quote can carry.

Every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

Italian origins in the route data

Eight of the sixteen Italian gateways in the network, largest first. The country is long and the airports are spread along it, which is why a courier in Bari and a courier in Turin are both in range of a gate.

Route counts and departure averages are read from the scheduled route statistics the site keeps in obc-network.json, built 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics. Flight times are great circle distance on the curve the rest of this site uses, so treat them as sector length rather than as a timetable.

A country with more than one centre

Fiumicino shows 232 nonstop destinations on roughly 618 departures a day and reaches Buenos Aires at 13h 44m. Malpensa carries 201 destinations and Sao Paulo at 11h 45m. Bergamo, forty five minutes away by road, adds another 154, and Linate a further 87 at short range with a very high frequency.

01

That Milan cluster is the unusual thing. Three boards at one city means a desk building an urgent routing out of northern Italy is choosing between aircraft rather than waiting for one. Naples adds 135 and Venice 114 in the same way further south and east.

02

What travels is what Italy makes and buys: machine tools and automotive components out of Emilia and Piedmont, fashion samples and finished pieces out of Milan and Florence, marble and design objects, pharmaceutical and diagnostic material out of Lazio and Lombardy, and the constant flow of certified parts that any manufacturing economy generates.

The passport, and the practical bit

An Italian passport crosses most of this network without advance paperwork. That is the operational reason a Gulf desk keeps couriers in southern Europe on its list: speed is the entire product, and a document that needs an appointment is not fast.

01

The verification is not yours to do. Entry conditions are checked against your nationality and the whole routing before an offer goes out, transit stops included, and where a permission is required it is arranged as part of the assignment.

02

Within the European Union it is a non question, and that is why the first thing an Italian courier is usually offered is a short European lane at short notice.

What is not attractive about this

You would be a freelancer. No employment, no schedule, no minimum and no expectation on either side except within an assignment you have accepted in writing.

01

Because of that no volume can be promised. It depends on what clients ship, and nobody at any desk knows that months out. A specific number from anyone would be made up.

02

And the trip is work with a deadline. You hold the consignment from start to finish, you present it yourself at the border, and the timings are the point. Where a later return has been issued, the days in the middle are unpaid and paid for by you. Flights, transfers and any hotel the routing requires are covered because the assignment requires them.

Questions from Italy

01Milan or Rome, does it matter which I am near?

Not for whether you qualify. It affects the mix: Milan and Bergamo see more northern industrial work, Rome more institutional and long haul. Both are well served.

02Is there work from the south and the islands?

Catania, Palermo, Naples and Bari all appear as origins in the route data. The boards are smaller and the assignments are typically European rather than intercontinental.

03Can I request a particular destination?

You can say what you would like. Assignments follow what clients need moved, so what actually arrives in your inbox is driven by demand rather than by preference.

04What sort of luggage would I be carrying?

Usually one sealed item that fits the cabin allowance, sometimes with a case or a cooled container around it. If a consignment needs anything unusual, that is stated in the offer.

One application, sixteen possible gates

You apply once rather than to a city. The form asks which passports you hold and roughly when you can travel.

The desk works out which gateways are realistic for you from your address.

Nothing is committed by applying. Every assignment arrives as a written offer with the routing and both dates, and you decide each one separately.

Three ways the desk can move your consignment

Same courier, same cabin, different amount of ground work. The desk recommends one of these in the quote and prices the other two if you ask.

The lean one

Airport to airport

  • A courier meets your driver airside at the departure airport
  • The consignment stays in the cabin for the whole flight
  • Your consignee, or their broker, collects at the arrival airport
  • Cleared in person, questions answered at the counter

Best when both ends have people who can reach an airport.

What most clients book

Door to door

  • Collection at your address, sealed and photographed
  • One named courier from that door to the signature
  • Customs cleared in person on arrival, duties handled as agreed
  • Proof of delivery with signature, identity check and photograph

The full chain, one price, one person answerable for it.

When the schedule will not do

Charter and relay

  • A second courier takes over where a visa or a duty limit stops the first
  • A private aircraft where the last airline departure has gone
  • Ground relay across a border when flying is the slower option
  • Priced case by case, in writing, before anything moves

For deadlines that a scheduled seat cannot reach.
