How to spot a courier scam

This industry attracts fraud, and people in Thailand are targeted specifically. Learn the pattern once and you are safe from all of it:

Anyone who asks you for money is a fraud. Registration fees, training fees, “customs clearance” fees, a ticket you pay for and get reimbursed later, all of it. A real courier company pays you.
Anyone who asks you to accept a package from a stranger is a fraud. Every legitimate assignment names the party you collect from and the party you deliver to, in writing, before you travel.
Anyone who tells you not to declare something is a fraud, and is trying to make you the person who gets arrested.
Anyone who will not tell you what is in the box is a fraud. You are entitled to know what you are carrying, and to refuse it.
Romance, chat-app and social-media “courier” offers are fraud without exception. No real logistics company recruits that way.

A Thailand assignment is not complicated, but every step has a failure mode, and the difference between an operator and a broker is whether those failure modes were planned for before the courier left the house.

Prototypes under confidentiality, homologation samples, tooling inserts and line-critical components moving to build schedules that were fixed months ago.

Jewellery, watches and precious goods

Loose stones, finished pieces, movements and bullion documentation, carried in the cabin under one named person's custody and declared properly on arrival in Thailand rather than hopefully.

Fashion and product samples

Lab dips, lookbooks, couture pieces and pre-production units that have to be in a buyer's hands before the meeting. After the meeting they are worth exactly nothing.

Media, events and production

Rushes, masters, broadcast hardware and event material with a transmission or a stage time attached, deadlines that do not move because logistics had a difficult day.

What can go wrong on a Thailand assignment, and what we do about it

Every operator has these problems. The difference is whether the answer was decided in advance or invented at the counter. This is our answer to each of them, written down before you need it.

The courier is refused boarding

Almost always a document problem: a passport too close to expiry, a missing transit visa, a name on the ticket that does not match the passport. Every one of those is checked at assignment, and it is checked again before the courier leaves for the airport.

Weather or airspace closes the route

Force majeure does not disappear because a shipment is urgent. What we do is re-plan around it, a different hub, a different carrier, occasionally a different UAE airport, and tell you what the new arrival time is rather than letting you discover it.

The consignment is larger than described

Measured at collection, not at the gate. If it will not fit a locker we buy a seat for it there and then and tell you the revised number before the courier moves, rather than improvising at check-in.

Something needs to continue past Thailand

A second sector, a border crossing or a domestic flight beyond the arrival airport in Thailand is planned as part of the assignment, not handed to a third party on arrival. The chain of custody either holds to the signature or it is not a chain of custody.

The flight is cancelled

Not a crisis, a routine. Before the courier leaves for the airport we already know the next two departures that could carry the consignment to Thailand, on any carrier, from any of the seven UAE airports. Rebooking is a phone call, not a rescue operation.

The connection is missed
