Fifty three gates across the United States, and a very long sector

No other country in this network comes close on either count: the number of airports a courier could leave from, or the length of the flight once they do. Both of those facts matter, and the second one matters more than you would think.

Independent contractor work. Nothing is scheduled for you.

A trade older than the express industry

Before there were overnight networks there were people who flew with things. Somebody had a package that had to be in Zurich on Tuesday, so somebody bought a seat and sat next to it. That business never went away, because there is a category of shipment that networks still cannot handle.

01

An original that has to stay an original. A biological sample with hours of life. A qualified part where the chain of custody cannot break. An item whose insurer requires a named person holding it.

02

The desk arranging these movements is in Dubai. It buys the ticket, in your name, matched to your passport, before you leave for the airport. You are not fronting money and you are not filing an expense report.

Thirteen to sixteen hours out, and why that changes the return

New York to Dubai is 13h 33m. Chicago is 14h 18m. Los Angeles is 16h 24m. San Francisco is 15h 57m. Boston is 13h 11m. Those are among the longest sectors anybody in this network flies.

01

Sector length is not a detail here, it is the whole argument. Nobody sends a person fourteen hours in one direction to have them turn around in ninety minutes unless the consignment genuinely demands it. So on American routings, more often than almost anywhere else, the return leg gets issued for a later date, and the desk can place it up to a week after the outbound when the assignment and the schedule allow.

02

Where that happens, several days at the far end are yours. Not paid, not managed, funded by you. The flight home is already booked and already paid for by the desk.

03

The qualification still applies and always will. Some consignments require an immediate turn regardless of distance, and some routings do not have the slack. Both dates are written into the offer, so you know which one you are being asked to do before you say yes.

Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for your consignment

A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.

Emirates

The night bank out of Terminal 3

Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For your consignment that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.

Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus cities
flydubai

The short sectors, several times a day

From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.

Frequency is the fallback
Etihad

Abu Dhabi as the second runway

Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for your consignment is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.

US preclearance at AUH

The desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at your consignment first, at a fare the quote can carry.

Every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.

Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.

American origins in the route data

Ten of the fifty three American gateways in the network, ordered by daily departures. The scale of the numbers in the last column is the reason a desk in Dubai has more options in this country than anywhere else.

Route counts and departure averages are read from the scheduled route statistics the site keeps in obc-network.json, built 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics. Flight times are great circle distance on the curve the rest of this site uses, so treat them as sector length rather than as a timetable.

The domestic net is the underrated part

Chicago alone shows 295 nonstop destinations on around 1,461 departures a day. Dallas Fort Worth carries 287, Atlanta 253, Denver 245. Those are numbers that no European gateway approaches, and they are almost all domestic.

01

For courier work that matters more than the intercontinental board. It means a person in a mid sized American city is usually within one short flight of an airport with a Gulf nonstop, and it means a desk building an urgent routing has an enormous number of ways to assemble it. Seattle reaches Dubai in 14h 39m, Washington in 13h 58m, Miami in 15h 27m, Dallas in 15h 50m.

02

The consignments follow American industry: aerospace and defence components under export control, semiconductor tooling and masks, clinical trial and diagnostic material, legal and financial originals, and prototype hardware moving between engineering sites.

Passport, and a word about export rules

A United States passport crosses most of this network without an advance permission, which is what makes a courier here reachable at short notice.

01

The checking is done before an offer is made, against your nationality and the entire routing including any transit point. Where a permission is required for a lane it is arranged as part of the assignment.

02

There is a second layer that applies specifically to consignments leaving this country. Some goods are subject to export controls, and where that is the case the paperwork is prepared by the shipper and the desk before you ever see the item. You are never asked to carry something whose documentation is incomplete, and you are told what you are declaring.

What is genuinely difficult about it

You would be an independent contractor and a freelancer, not an employee. No schedule, no minimum, no benefits and no obligation in either direction outside an assignment you have accepted in writing.

01

Nobody can promise how often you would fly. It depends on what clients ship and no one forecasts that. A number quoted to you by anybody is invented.

02

And the long sectors cut both ways. Fourteen hours in a seat is fourteen hours in a seat, jet lag is real, and you are responsible for the consignment the whole time and answerable for it at the border at the end. Where a later return has been issued, those extra days are unpaid and you pay for them. What the assignment requires is covered: both flights, the ground transfers, and a hotel where the routing forces one.

Questions from the United States

01Do I need to live near a Gulf nonstop airport?

It helps and it is not required. The domestic network is dense enough that a feeder leg is ordinary, and the city pages give the drive from your own town to the nearest origin.

02Is this taxed as self employment?

You would be contracting, so your tax position is your own to handle. That is a matter for your own advisor rather than for a recruitment page.

03How bad is the jet lag on these routings?

Real, and worse eastbound. It is one reason a later return is common on American assignments: a courier who has just flown fourteen hours is not the person you want turning straight around.

04Would I ever carry something export controlled?

Possibly, and if so the documentation is prepared before you are asked. You are always told what you are declaring and you never carry anything undocumented.

One application, fifty three possible gates

You do not apply to a city. One form, which asks which passports you hold and roughly when you could travel.

Which airport you would leave from comes out of where you live.

Applying commits you to nothing. Every assignment is a written offer showing the routing, the outbound and the return before you accept.

Three ways the desk can move your consignment

Same courier, same cabin, different amount of ground work. The desk recommends one of these in the quote and prices the other two if you ask.

The lean one

Airport to airport

  • A courier meets your driver airside at the departure airport
  • The consignment stays in the cabin for the whole flight
  • Your consignee, or their broker, collects at the arrival airport
  • Cleared in person, questions answered at the counter

Best when both ends have people who can reach an airport.

What most clients book

Door to door

  • Collection at your address, sealed and photographed
  • One named courier from that door to the signature
  • Customs cleared in person on arrival, duties handled as agreed
  • Proof of delivery with signature, identity check and photograph

The full chain, one price, one person answerable for it.

When the schedule will not do

Charter and relay

  • A second courier takes over where a visa or a duty limit stops the first
  • A private aircraft where the last airline departure has gone
  • Ground relay across a border when flying is the slower option
  • Priced case by case, in writing, before anything moves

For deadlines that a scheduled seat cannot reach.
