It exists because there are shipments that no network will move on the terms required: a clinical sample with hours of life in it, an original that a copy will not replace, a certified part holding up a production line, a piece an insurer will not release from human custody.
Portugal is the closest Europe gets to South America
That is not a slogan, it is a distance. Lisbon to Sao Paulo is shorter than almost any other European sector to Brazil, and it is the reason a Dubai desk pays attention to couriers here.
Freelance work, taken one assignment at a time
What you would actually be doing
An on board courier carries a single consignment as hand baggage, on a scheduled passenger flight, and remains legally responsible for it from collection until a named person signs for it at the other end. That is the entire job description.
The desk that needs it moved is in Dubai and it buys the ticket. Your name, your passport, booked before you leave, and at no point are you out of pocket for it.
Tell us what has to fly. We answer with a flight and a price.
Five short questions. A dispatcher replies with a named departure, the delivery hour and one fixed price, day and night.
- One named courier from collection to signature
- Customs cleared in person on arrival
- Licensed UAE company, proper VAT invoices
The Atlantic, the Gulf, and the second date
Lisbon to Dubai is 7h 45m nonstop. Westward, Lisbon to Sao Paulo is 9h 54m and Rio 9h 38m, and Porto reaches Sao Paulo at 10h 11m and Newark at 6h 50m. Portugal sits at the corner of the continent and every one of those sectors is shorter from here than from further east.
The outbound date is fixed by the deadline, always. The return is the one with latitude in it. When an assignment does not need you back at once and the schedule allows, the desk can issue the return leg for up to a week after the outbound.
That is worth saying carefully rather than enthusiastically. It happens when it fits. When it does, the days in the middle are yours, unpaid, at your own expense, with the seat home already bought and waiting. When it does not, you are on the evening flight, and you knew that before you accepted because both dates were on the offer.
The long Atlantic sectors are where a later return is most plausible, simply because nobody sends a courier eleven hours to turn round in ninety minutes if the consignment does not demand it.
Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for your consignment
A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.
The night bank out of Terminal 3
Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For your consignment that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.
Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus citiesThe short sectors, several times a day
From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.
Frequency is the fallbackAbu Dhabi as the second runway
Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for your consignment is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.
US preclearance at AUHThe desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at your consignment first, at a fare the quote can carry.
Every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.
Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.
Portuguese origins in the route data
Four airports here appear as origins in the network, including Madeira. Between them they cover the mainland north to south and the Atlantic islands.
| Gate | Airport | Nonstop airports | Departures a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| LIS | Lisbon Portela | 154 | 368 |
| OPO | Porto Francisco de Sá Carneiro | 138 | 208 |
| FAO | Faro | 87 | 132 |
| FNC | Funchal Madeira | 67 | 64 |
Route counts and departure averages are read from the scheduled route statistics the site keeps in obc-network.json, built 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics. Flight times are great circle distance on the curve the rest of this site uses, so treat them as sector length rather than as a timetable.
Small country, long reach
Lisbon shows 154 nonstop destinations on around 368 departures a day, Porto 138, Faro 87 and Funchal 67. Faro is dominated by the British and Irish traffic, which makes it unexpectedly good for short notice work into and out of those markets.
The Brazil connection is the structural one. Portuguese language, deep commercial ties and the shortest sectors in Europe mean that when something has to reach Sao Paulo or Rio in a hurry from anywhere in the network, a routing through Lisbon is often the sensible answer.
What moves reflects that: legal and corporate originals on the Brazil lanes, pharmaceutical and clinical material out of Lisbon, automotive and mould components out of the Leiria and Marinha Grande cluster, and technology hardware out of the Porto region.
On documents, plainly
A Portuguese passport is one of the more useful in this network, and the language it comes with is a real operational asset on two continents rather than a cultural footnote.
The checking is done for you. Entry conditions are verified against your nationality and the full routing including transit before an offer is made, and if a lane needs a permission it is arranged as part of the assignment.
The value to the desk is straightforward: a courier who can be at Lisbon tonight and in Sao Paulo tomorrow morning, without a single form standing in the way, is solving a problem that nothing else solves.
The honest downside
You would be a freelancer. No employer, no schedule, no minimum, no entitlement. Every assignment is offered separately and turning one down costs you nothing at all.
So nobody can tell you how often it would happen. It follows what clients ship and that is not something anyone can forecast. A number offered to you by anybody would be invented.
It is also real work under time pressure. The consignment stays with you the whole way, you clear it personally, and the schedule is the reason the job exists. If a later return has been issued, the days in between are unpaid and funded by you. The flights, the transfers and any hotel the routing forces are covered.

Questions from Portugal
01Are the Brazil lanes really a thing or is that marketing?
Lisbon and Porto both show nonstop sectors to Sao Paulo in the route data, and Lisbon reaches Rio nonstop as well. Whether you personally get offered one depends on demand, but the aircraft are not hypothetical.
02I am in the Algarve. Is Faro any use?
Faro appears as an origin with a substantial board, weighted heavily to the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is genuinely useful for short notice work in that direction.
03Would I need to speak Portuguese for the Brazil work?
It helps a great deal at the far end. English remains the working language of the desk and the documents.
04Is there a minimum number of trips I have to do?
There is none. You can accept one assignment a year or none at all. Nothing lapses and nothing is held against you.
The step in front of you
One application. It asks which passports you hold and when you could realistically travel, and it takes a few minutes to complete.
Everything else is decided assignment by assignment, later, in writing.
Applying is free of obligation. Each offer names the routing, the outbound and the return before you accept it.
