For those a person is booked onto a flight and carries the item in the cabin. They clear it at customs themselves, they hand it to a named recipient, and the recipient signs. That signature is the end of the assignment.
Athens is one of the shortest Gulf sectors in Europe
Four hours and twenty minutes, nonstop, more than twice a day. Greece sits at the south east corner of Europe and that position does real work for a courier desk.
Self employed. Nothing here is rostered.
Why somebody pays for the seat
There is a class of shipment where the value of arriving on time exceeds the value of everything else. A trial sample. A signed original. A component holding up a vessel or an aircraft. Something that must stay in a named person's custody from one building to another.
A desk in Dubai pays for that seat. It books in your name, matched to your passport, ahead of time, and no part of it is funded by you.
Tell us what has to fly. We answer with a flight and a price.
Five short questions. A dispatcher replies with a named departure, the delivery hour and one fixed price, day and night.
- One named courier from collection to signature
- Customs cleared in person on arrival
- Licensed UAE company, proper VAT invoices
A short hop to the Gulf, and the days that can follow it
Athens to Dubai is 4h 21m nonstop and it goes several times a day. It is among the shortest Gulf sectors flown from Europe, which makes Greek couriers easy to fit into a tight plan. The outbound is fixed by the deadline.
The return often is not. When an assignment does not need you back straight away and the schedule allows, the desk can issue the return leg for up to a week after the outbound. Nobody is being generous; there is simply frequently no reason to bring you home sooner.
Where that happens, the middle of the trip is yours. Unpaid, unmanaged, funded by you, in a city the assignment already flew you to. The seat back is already bought.
Where it does not, you know at the point of accepting, because the offer names both dates. A great many assignments are a handover and a same day departure and there is nothing second rate about them.
Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for your consignment
A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.
The night bank out of Terminal 3
Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For your consignment that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.
Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus citiesThe short sectors, several times a day
From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.
Frequency is the fallbackAbu Dhabi as the second runway
Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for your consignment is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.
US preclearance at AUHThe desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at your consignment first, at a fare the quote can carry.
Every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.
Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.
Greek origins in the route data
Six Greek airports appear as origins in the network. Five of them are islands or regional cities, which is a shape almost no other country in this section has.
| Gate | Airport | Nonstop airports | Departures a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATH | Athens Eleftherios Venizelos | 172 | 472 |
| HER | Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis | 112 | 150 |
| RHO | Rodes Island Diagoras | 117 | 134 |
| SKG | Thessaloniki Macedonia | 101 | 116 |
| CFU | Kerkyra Island Corfu | 102 | 97 |
| KGS | Kos Island Kos | 72 | 63 |
Route counts and departure averages are read from the scheduled route statistics the site keeps in obc-network.json, built 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics. Flight times are great circle distance on the curve the rest of this site uses, so treat them as sector length rather than as a timetable.
The capital, and an unusual number of second airports
Athens shows 172 nonstop destinations on about 472 departures a day. New York is 9h 54m, Chicago 10h 53m, Singapore 11h 13m.
Then the islands and the north. Heraklion carries 112 nonstop destinations, Rhodes 117, Thessaloniki 101 and Corfu 102. Heraklion reaches Tel Aviv in 1h 36m and Thessaloniki reaches Athens in 0h 48m. Those are not token boards, and for a desk that needs something moved off an island without waiting for a mainland connection they are genuinely useful.
The consignments reflect what the country does: shipping and marine originals, which in the largest ship owning nation in the world is a category in itself, marine and engine components, pharmaceutical and clinical material out of Athens and Thessaloniki, food and agricultural samples, and tourism sector documentation in season.
Passport and position
A Greek passport crosses most of this network without advance permission, and inside the European Union there is nothing to arrange.
The desk performs the checking against your nationality and the specific routing before an offer is made, transit points included. A lane that needs a permission gets one as a piece of the assignment.
Geography adds something here. From Athens the Levant, north Africa, the Gulf and the Black Sea are all short sectors, which puts a Greek courier in range of routings that would be awkward to build from further north and west.
The parts nobody advertises
You would be a freelancer. Not employed, not scheduled, not owed anything, and free to decline at no cost.
For that reason nobody can tell you how often it would happen. It follows what clients ship, which is unpredictable, and a specific number from anyone is fabricated.
And it is work with a deadline attached. You keep the consignment throughout, you declare it yourself, and the times in the offer are real. Days released by a later return come out of your own budget. What the assignment needs is covered: both flights, the ground transfers, and a hotel where the routing leaves no alternative.

Questions from Greece
01Do the island airports actually get used for this?
They appear as origins with real boards. Whether an assignment starts there depends on where the client is, and in a shipping economy that is more often than you might guess.
02Is the work seasonal?
The island boards are more seasonal than the Athens one, and the departure averages in the table show that. Athens is steady across the year.
03Is Greek useful?
At home and in the shipping sector, yes. The desk runs in English and so does every document you would be handed.
04What is the shortest assignment likely to be?
A European lane can be done in a working day. From Athens, several of the nearby markets are inside three hours.
One application, six possible gates
You are asked for the passports you hold and the days you could travel.
If you are on an island, say which one, because it changes the routing entirely.
Applying does not commit you. Every assignment arrives as a written offer with the routing and both dates.
