So they are carried. One item, one passenger, one signature at the other end, and that passenger is legally accountable for it the entire way. That is the whole trade and it has not changed much in fifty years.
Belgium is small, and that turns out to be the point
You can drive across this country in three hours and reach two different airports doing it. For work that begins with a phone call and a deadline, that geography is worth more than most people realise.
Freelance, per assignment, and you decide each time
A courier is a solution to a problem freight cannot solve
Diamonds in Antwerp. A patent original in Brussels. A pharmaceutical sample with eighteen hours of usable life. A part for a stopped production line in Limburg. None of these can sit in a hold, wait for a customs broker, or be handed to a network that scans a barcode and hopes.
The desk arranging it sits in Dubai and buys the seat itself. It is booked in your name, matched to your passport, and you never put money in front of it.
Tell us what has to fly. We answer with a flight and a price.
Five short questions. A dispatcher replies with a named departure, the delivery hour and one fixed price, day and night.
- One named courier from collection to signature
- Customs cleared in person on arrival
- Licensed UAE company, proper VAT invoices
What the second date is allowed to say
Brussels to Dubai is a nonstop at 6h 35m and it runs more than once a day. That is the backbone lane from here. You arrive, you clear the consignment through customs in person, you hand it over, it is signed for, and the job is done.
Then there is the question of when you fly home. Sometimes that is the same evening, because the client needs something brought back. Sometimes it is not, and when the assignment and the schedule both allow, the desk can put the return leg up to a week after the outbound. It is a normal thing to do when building a routing, not an inducement.
If it happens, those days are yours. Not paid, not supervised, not anybody's business. You cover your own bed and board during them and the flight home is already in the booking.
Do not read this as the shape of every trip. It is the shape of some of them, and the offer tells you which one you are looking at, because both dates are printed on it before you say yes or no.
Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for your consignment
A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.
The night bank out of Terminal 3
Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For your consignment that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.
Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus citiesThe short sectors, several times a day
From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.
Frequency is the fallbackAbu Dhabi as the second runway
Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for your consignment is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.
US preclearance at AUHThe desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at your consignment first, at a fare the quote can carry.
Every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.
Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.
The Belgian gateways in the route data
Two airports here appear as origins in the network. They serve very different traffic, and between them they cover a surprising amount of the map for a country of eleven million.
Route counts and departure averages are read from the scheduled route statistics the site keeps in obc-network.json, built 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics. Flight times are great circle distance on the curve the rest of this site uses, so treat them as sector length rather than as a timetable.
Brussels, and the other Brussels
Brussels Airport reaches 193 airports nonstop on about 324 departures a day. Tokyo is 11h 43m, Hong Kong 11h 36m, Singapore 13h 01m, Sao Paulo 11h 56m. That is a full intercontinental board and it is the practical reason a Dubai desk keeps Belgian couriers on file.
Charleroi is the other animal entirely: 127 destinations, almost all of them European and many of them the kind of city that a network airline no longer serves. Tirana is 2h 17m from there. For a same day European lane that is genuinely useful, because the aircraft goes where the network hub does not.
The consignments themselves follow Belgian industry: stones and finished jewellery out of Antwerp, clinical trial and vaccine material out of the pharmaceutical belt, institutional and legal originals out of Brussels, and machine components out of Flanders and Wallonia both.
On the passport, briefly
A Belgian passport moves across this network with very little advance permission, and that is the reason a Gulf operation recruits in western Europe at all. A courier who cannot leave for four days is not solving anybody's problem.
None of that means you should be checking rules yourself. Requirements are verified against your nationality and the specific routing, transit points included, before an offer is issued. Where a visa is genuinely needed it is dealt with as part of the assignment.
Within the European Union it hardly arises, and that is why short notice work inside Europe is the most common first assignment from here.
Now the unflattering half
You would be working as a freelancer. Not employed, not scheduled, not entitled to any particular amount of work. Each assignment is offered separately and declining one changes nothing.
For the same reason nobody can honestly tell you how often it would happen. That depends on what clients ship, which nobody knows in advance, and a specific figure from anyone would be invented.
It is also genuinely a job. You hold the consignment the whole way, you present it at customs yourself, and the times in the offer are not suggestions. When a later return is issued, the days in the middle are unpaid and self funded. What the desk covers is what the assignment needs: the flights, the ground transfers and a hotel where the routing forces one.

What Belgian applicants ask
01French, Dutch or English, does it matter?
The desk works in English and the paperwork is in English. Other languages are useful at a destination but nothing here depends on them.
02Charleroi is closer to me than Brussels. Is that a problem?
No. Both are origins in the route data. Charleroi carries mostly European work and Brussels carries the long haul, so which one you are near influences the kind of assignment you tend to see rather than whether you qualify.
03How far ahead would I know about a trip?
Anywhere from several days to a few hours. You tell the desk what notice you can work with, and you are not sent things outside that.
04Do I need to live in Belgium, or just be able to fly from it?
What matters is that you can reach a gateway in the table reliably and that you are entitled to be in the country you are flying from. The desk asks about both when you apply.
The next step is one form
It asks which passports you hold and when you could realistically be at an airport. That is the substance of it.
Nothing is decided by the form. Assignments are offered afterwards, individually and in writing.
Applying commits you to nothing at all. Each offer arrives with the routing and both dates on it and you answer it on its own merits.
