The economics are strange but simple. The item is worth more than the seat, so somebody buys the seat. In this case that somebody is a desk in Dubai, and the booking is made in your name against your own passport, before you go anywhere.
A small country with a disproportionate airport, and what to do with it
Ireland has one large gateway and two useful small ones. The interesting thing is not the size of Dublin. It is which direction Dublin points.
Freelance. You choose which assignments you take.
The oldest trick in air freight
When something absolutely has to be somewhere and there is no freighter, no space, no time or no permission, it goes with a person. One item, in the cabin, in the custody of a passenger who signs for it at the other end. The industry calls that an on board courier and it has been doing it since long before overnight networks existed.
You will never be asked to pay for a flight and then claim it back. That arrangement, wherever you see it advertised, is a different and much worse business.
Tell us what has to fly. We answer with a flight and a price.
Five short questions. A dispatcher replies with a named departure, the delivery hour and one fixed price, day and night.
- One named courier from collection to signature
- Customs cleared in person on arrival
- Licensed UAE company, proper VAT invoices
The second date, and why Ireland has room in it
Dublin to Dubai is a nonstop at 7h 30m, and it goes more than once a day. That is the assignment lane that matters most from here, and it has enough departures in it that a desk is not locked into a single aircraft when it comes to sending you home.
So when the consignment does not need to come straight back, the return leg can be written for up to a week after the outbound. Not always. When the schedule and the job allow it. The distinction is not a legal disclaimer, it is the actual state of affairs: some assignments are a handover and a same night flight, and some leave four or five days sitting in the middle of the booking.
Those days are yours in the fullest sense. Nobody is paying you for them and nobody is telling you what to do in them. Your hotel, your food, your plans. The flight home is already bought.
What Ireland gives you, oddly, is a western advantage. Dublin sits far enough west that its long haul sectors are shorter than the equivalent from most of Europe. New York is 6h 32m and Chicago 7h 28m, and Shannon is closer still at 6h 20m to New York.
Three departure boards, one desk: Emirates, flydubai and Etihad for your consignment
A hand-carry is only as fast as the next departure. The desk watches three boards at once and books the one that lands first, then holds the one that leaves next.
The night bank out of Terminal 3
Between one and four in the morning Emirates pushes back a wave of widebodies from Terminal 3 that reach Europe before the first meeting and Asia by the afternoon. For your consignment that wave is the reason a courier confirmed at eight in the evening is still delivering the next day.
Widebody only, non-stop to 140 plus citiesThe short sectors, several times a day
From Terminal 2 flydubai runs the one to five hour sectors: the Caucasus, Central Asia, East Africa, the Balkans, the subcontinent. Where a widebody leaves once a day, flydubai often leaves three times, which turns a missed slot into a ninety minute delay rather than a lost day.
Frequency is the fallbackAbu Dhabi as the second runway
Ninety minutes down the E11, Etihad leaves from Zayed International with its own bank of departures and, for the United States, immigration cleared before boarding. When the Dubai departure for your consignment is gone, the desk looks at Abu Dhabi before it looks at tomorrow.
US preclearance at AUHThe desk holds no allegiance to a carrier. The booking goes to whichever board puts a courier at your consignment first, at a fare the quote can carry.
Every hour it waits is an hour it is not moving.
Five questions, one fixed price, a named flight. The desk answers within 15 minutes, day and night, and you decide.
The Irish gateways in the route data
Three airports on this island appear as origins in the network. Dublin does the heavy lifting; Cork and Shannon are small, and both of them fly places that matter.
Route counts and departure averages are read from the scheduled route statistics the site keeps in obc-network.json, built 2026-09-07 from AeroDataBox scheduled route statistics. Flight times are great circle distance on the curve the rest of this site uses, so treat them as sector length rather than as a timetable.
Dublin points west, and that is worth money
Dublin shows 198 nonstop destinations on around 462 departures a day, which is a serious board for a city of its size. It reaches Shanghai at 11h 36m eastbound and the American east coast in well under seven hours westbound.
Dublin and Shannon also both operate United States preclearance, which means a courier travelling to the US clears American immigration and customs on Irish soil and lands domestically on the other side. For a person carrying a consignment against a deadline that is not a convenience, it is a structural advantage, and it is the reason Irish gateways come up in transatlantic routings more often than the population would suggest.
The traffic itself reflects what the country makes. Pharmaceutical and medical device material out of Cork and the midlands, software and hardware originals out of Dublin, aircraft components out of Shannon, which has been an aviation town since before most airlines existed.
An Irish passport in a hurry
There are few better documents to hold for this kind of work. Free movement across the European Union, the Common Travel Area with the United Kingdom, and broad visa free access across the Gulf and North America.
Which does not mean the checking is skipped. Each offer is assembled against your nationality and the exact routing, including any transit point, and any permission a lane needs is arranged as part of the assignment. You are never expected to research that yourself or to gamble on it at a check in desk.
Where it matters most is speed. A desk that has to move something tonight will call the couriers who can be airside without an appointment at an embassy, and that is the whole of the reason it calls people here.
Read this part twice
You would be a freelancer. Nobody employs you, nobody rosters you and nobody owes you an assignment. Offers come, you accept in writing or you say no, and saying no is free.
That also means no one can tell you how often you would fly. It depends entirely on what clients need moved, which is not knowable in advance, and a number quoted to you by anybody would be invented.
Nor is it a soft day out. You are responsible for the consignment from collection to signature, you answer for it personally at customs, and the timings in the offer are real. When a later return has been issued, the days in between are your own time at your own expense. What is covered is what the job requires: the flights, the transfers, and a hotel where the routing needs one.

Questions we get from Ireland
01Is Cork or Shannon any use, or is it Dublin only?
Both appear as origins in the route data with their own nonstop boards, and Shannon carries preclearance. Dublin is simply larger. Where you live is a question about your drive, not about whether you qualify.
02Could I be sent somewhere I need a visa for?
Only after that has been sorted out. The permission a lane needs is worked out against your passport before an offer reaches you, and it forms part of the assignment rather than being left to you.
03What happens if a flight is cancelled while I am carrying something?
You call the desk, which is staffed around the clock, and the desk rebooks you. You do not make that decision alone and you do not pay for it. That is a large part of what the desk is for.
04Do I need my own travel insurance?
You are self employed, so your own cover is your own decision and worth having. What the assignment carries is separate and is explained in the terms rather than on a recruitment page.
The application is short, and it is the only step for now
Tell us which passports you hold and roughly when you can travel. That is most of it.
After that you would hear from the desk rather than from a form.
An application is not a commitment. Assignments are offered individually, in writing, with both dates visible, and you decline as many as you like.
